Gymnasium on the campus of Muskegon High School, where tonight
it's Senior Night for the Lady Big Reds as they
welcome in Division two power and co champions of the
OK Gold the eighteen to two Falcons of West Catholic.
It's our regular season finale of the LMCU High School
Basketball Game of the Week, exclusively here on ninety six

to one of the game. Hello everyone, along with Buck
Gino high above Redmond Potter Hardcourt, I'm Brett Pakita Joe
are at the third member of our crew back in
the studio in downtown Grand Rapids and guys. Final few
days of the regular season for the girls. The boys
have already started district play the earliest I can remember,
Buck Gino, a full week of district action in the

month of February. So much for the magic of But
we're gonna have fun and it's all brought to you
by our friends at Lake Michigan Credit Union. And then
the road to the President Center MKD Funeral Homes.

Well, the weather, it feels like springs, so it feels
like tournament time out there with fifty degrees. But another
thing you didn't tell me that we are gonna be
this high up. I don't like heights at all, but no,
this is a great atmosphere, great historic venue that's been
redone Redmond Potter Gymnasium, and should be two good teams

(02:28):
going at it. We'll get to both of these teams
here in our pregame show miskeige. And you look at
the record, You're like, how okay, they're eight and eleven.
Why are you telling me that they're a good team. Well,
a couple things. Number One, four of their losses have
been by one possession, so three points or less, including two.

By one point.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
And also they haven't had their two best players for
almost the entire season. Number I have say, returned against
Reeves Puffer. Now the first meeting for context, Big Reds
lose to the Rockets thirty to twenty seven. In the rematch,
Mariah Sane coming back from her injury, they beat Reeze
Puffer sixty nine to forty two. Now, I'm no math major.

I had to take a couple of classes. That is
a twenty eight I'm sorry, a thirty two point difference.
Twenty eight of those were from Mariah san So I mean, guys,
that is a huge difference for this team, and they
don't even have the other lady, c C.

Ponner.

She's not even back yet from her injury. She's also
a Division one prospect also a junior, so good for
her that her high school career is not over even
if she did not able to play in March in
the tournament. Because if you look ahead to the districts,
they've got some team named Rockford in their district. So
if they win the first game, their next game is
gonna be against Rockford. A tough task even if they

were at full strength for this Michigan Big Reds team,
but I think impressive even though they have any losing record.
Brett just very competitive in every game, and this is
a good thing for them growth wise. They have a
lot of younger players on the team, some kids finding
out how to play without maybe the big stars, and
now they're kind of finding some other girls that can

(04:10):
shoot the rock or defend or whatever it is that
they've got to do. So a great opportunity for the
Big Reds. You look at West Catholic, a perennially strong program.
Of course, jie vandr Ndy, the longtime head coach she
has departed in place, is now David Pies where boy,
he's just picked up right where they left off. Derek's
done a great job of keeping this core group together.

We've got some good senior leadership, but also still a
couple of younger players on the roster to fill that out.
So a great season for West Catholic so far, but
this will be a tough matchup for them now with
Muskegan almost at full strength.

You'll hear from Derek Piez coming up in the Montel
Construction Coaches going on our j H Famby Store's pregame
show as we count you down a chip off about
sixteen and a half minutes from the stony lineups here Tonight,
Miss Skegan taking out West Catholic in a non conference
payer both teams out of the conference. But the reason
that Derek Pies scheduled this game is what a perfect
game to get his team ready for what they're gonna face.

Division two is a gauntlet just like Division one. Miskegan runs.
They get after you aggressively. They've got size, They've got
guards that you know that you're gonna have to face.
How important guards are the run to the Breslin Center.
Wes Kathick knows that they've had great guards all the
way through and they're trying to make it back to
the Final four for the fourth consecutive season on a

new head coach, Derek Pies. They've done a great job.
And I've seen both these teams in person. Here's the
other thing that happens. Injuries are a theme for this
game tonight in two ways. Anna Ignatowski is back. She's
missed the last two seasons with injuries where she has
been out and could be a difference maker for West Kathick.
Who knows, maybe they win a state championship with her. Well,

(05:48):
all I did is see her light up South Christian
in that loss in the rematch at wes Cathy a
couple of weeks ago when I was covering for five
to seventeen. But she is a grinder, She's a senior,
that sense of urgency like we've talked talked about with
senior night tonight, and now you get someone back like
a Mariah saying it's go time for the month of March,
and I guarantee you this is gonna be a fun one. Tonight.

(06:08):
We covered Muskegan as one of our Game of the
Week broadcasts right after the holidays in early January, they
looked at Rockford fifty nine to twenty four. But the
other thing you see with injuries, Machino is everyone else
who gets a chance to play gets that much better
because they have to up their game up. That's what's
gonna happen. I think we're gonna see it first hand
with Muskege tonight.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
Well we have seen it with Muskegon again. The record
kind of belies what they've been going through this year
missing two of those players, but it gives them opportunity
for growth. But now with getting Mariah saying back, we
saw the impact that she had against Reeze Puffer. We're
going to see it again here tonight. And this is
gonna be a group that they still like I said,

(06:49):
they have only three seniors.

Speaker 2 (06:51):
We had senior night.

Speaker 3 (06:52):
It took about five minutes because there's only three of them.
So they have a lot of younger players on the roster,
including some fifth quarter girls that are coming up from
the JV So they have good depth. And now that
depth is gonna be experienced. And we talk about it
all the time in football, those two or three year
varsity players when by time they get to be a senior.
I mean, they are just head and shoulders above the crowd,

(07:14):
and it's simply because of the experience. It's not because
they're that much better than some of the other players.
It's because they've been there and they've been through the trenches.
They've been through the ringer at the varsity level for
two or maybe even three years. So it just is
a very valuable commodity to have those types of players

(07:34):
on your team, and it reaps benefits. It's disappointing for
the players that are injured, for sure, but they all
also junior so they're gonna come back next year and
they're gonna have a very strong team around them that's
gonna have experience. So even though you gotta you gotta
look at the sunny side, right boy, we're gonna have
a really good team next year. Even if we don't

(07:55):
have a great success this year, it's not gonna get
worse next year. We're gonna have the same group and
bring it even more girls. So it's gonna be interesting
for Miskegan. In West Catholic, they do have four seniors themselves,
but again they have girls that play in key roles.
They might not play a lot but they're getting experience,
and that's always the key in high school sports is

the experience and playing those type of games. In a
game like this tonight has to be a great measuring
stick for both sides because now they're gonna see how
they measure up against some of the better competition.

Speaker 2 (08:27):
You love footwork, if you love postplay, if you like
rebounding and shot blocking, you're gonna love the two super
sophomores on display against each other tonight. Alexis Asakomme one
of my favorite names to cover in high school hoops
in the West Miscon area from girls we saw last
year as a freshman start on varsity. She was amazing,
almost averages a double double. Coming into the contest tonight

only a sophomore. She's gonna be a future color player,
but she's going up against a tall athletic player in
Dynasty Bell Sophomore number twenty four goes about six two
six three. They call her d Nasty for a reason,
and it's gonna be fun to watch them go head
to head in the post. Coming up after the break

Van Derendy. What the estimation is for this team in
the ceiling and how important this game is tonight to
get him ready for district play on the road to
the Buston Center next week into Vision two that's coming

This month. From that point though, girls get right back
on track. You guys win out as far as the
Okay Gold is concerned, end up splitting the crown with
the Sailors.

Speaker 4 (10:22):
Yeah, that was a high atmosphere, high energy type game
with South Critsian. I think both teams benefited from it
for sure, you know, and it only help us going
into the playoffs. You're got a big one tonight against Miskegan.

Speaker 2 (10:32):
You're eighteen and two overall, and you had this one schedule.
I know you were trying to get another game with
Grand Haven if you could, like we talked about, and
all that is prep because it's not within Okay Gold
Division play to get ready for the tournament. When you
look at the big Reds. You see Mariah Sain played
on Friday night, one of their junior talented guards that's
missed most of the year. They might get C. C.

(10:53):
Bonner back for you tonight as well. What does that
mean for you as a coach as far as preparation
and what you're getting out of this game.

Speaker 4 (11:00):
Yeah, we have to be locked in defensively. I think
Sane poured in twenty eight points against Reese Puffer on Friday,
so it seems like, you know, she's just ready to go.
She's a Division one caliber player, as is Bonner. We
have to be up to the task. We have to
be able to plug gaps and stop saying from getting
to the rim. I think out of her twenty eight points,
only one was a three point attempt, so everything is

(11:21):
to the rim or mid range. She has great elevation
at her jump shot. We're going to try to use
some length to kind of throw her off and then
we have to get back in transition. You know, they
do a really good job of speeding up teams, causing
turnovers and getting points in bunches. So if we can
take care of the basketball and stop drible penetration, I
think we have a good shot tonight.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
You know what CC Bonner and Mariah Sane mean as
far as players and what they mean to this very
kind of young but talented Meschigan team. They both have
missed over fourteen games this season. Just to give our
listening audience perspective, in your opinion, when you watch them
and the bigs that they have, if those girls were healthy,

(12:01):
would they be one of the top teams we'd be
talking about in West Michigan all season? Oh?

Speaker 4 (12:05):
Without question. I mean that those are two of the
top guards, not only in just West Michigan, but in
the state. And then you're throwing a talented post like
Dynasty Bell, they got some other girls who can shoot
it from the perimeter. I mean, without question, the style
of play that they have, in the talent that they have.
If they were healthy all year, I mean without question
that they're up there in the top three in West
Michigan for sure.

Really impressed that night with Anna Ignatowski. She is just
a grinder. She just seems to be getting better, getting
more acclimated and comfortable after coming off of two tough
injuries that kept her out the last two seasons. However,
as you look at the rest of your team, what
do you want to get more out of And let's
start with maybe the seniors came tournament time that you're
gonna need to try to get back to the President

(13:08):
Center and Division two.

Speaker 4 (13:09):
Oh yeah, I think it starts with our Miss Basketball candidate,
Lisia Diikster. I mean we're going to go as far
as she wills us. I mean she she does everything
for us. You know, scores, it rebounds, it assists, it
just their playmaking ability. She's got one of the highest
plus minuses on our team. It starts with her, and
we've had the conversation with her. I'd love to see
her be a little bit more aggressive, start to take

(13:29):
some shots. You know, look at her scoring ability a
little bit more. She's just so gifted as a passer,
and she just has such high basketball IQ that you know,
she's always making the right plays, like sometimes we just
needed to be a little bit more selfish. And then
Paige c Lee London, I mean, she's by our top
three point shooter on the team. I mean, any night
she gets going hot, it's going to be tough for

(13:50):
the other team to keep up. And then you know,
Alexis Asikame has probably been our most consistent player offensively.
I mean, she's a double double every night. You know,
I have to do a better job of getting her
more looks down there. She's just so versatile. You know,
a lot of teams will put their biggest girl on her,
and then you know, we're able to spread teams out
and she can take people off the dribble. So she
is a mismatched nightmare. And then you have the freshman

(14:12):
Kenny Slanger, who I think a lot of people are.
You know, they when they see West Cathack, you know
they're first to talk about Ignatowski and Dykestra and Skame
and you know, arguably so, but Kenmy Slanger as a
freshman has been very impressive. I'd argue that she's been
the best freshman in West Michigan this year. I mean sure,
stats are up there with Dykester. I mean she's ten

(14:32):
points a game, five rebounds, four assists, three steals. She
picks up full court. She's got leadership tendencies already as
a freshman. She's vocal, she's positive. I know, she just
helps us go.

Speaker 2 (14:45):
She's fearless too, I'll use that word. Coach. I saw
her and even though she didn't have her best game
against South Christian, the one I saw in person, you're right.
You just look at her numbers and what she can do.
I mean, that's confident for a first year varsity player
as a freshman, and really they're not freshman right after
you go through a schedule like you have and you've
played twenty games.

Speaker 4 (15:03):
Right, yeah, no, she I mean she's playing like a
junior right now for sure, And we leave her for it.

Speaker 2 (15:09):
Coach, after this one is done, you have a little
bit of layoff until next Wednesday. You'll be in a
district semi final due to the seating that you earned
during the regular season in Allendale. So after tonight, take
us through What then will happen with you and your
team is moving forward?

Speaker 4 (15:26):
Yeah, so we'll probably take a day or two off.
I mean, we got some girls battling the flu and stuff.
It's just going around. And then you know, Dykes has
been banged up with her elbow. We got a couple
of girls with some hamstring injury. So we're just trying
to get healthy. So it'll probably take a day or
two off the rest, and then we're right back into
film and right back into practice. And because we have
a tough Covenant Christian team and then you know all

(15:46):
goes well with that, it'll be the winner of unity
in Allendale, who are both tough. We played Allendale earlier
in the year and I mean they were up on
us at the end of the first quarter before we
finally got things together. But it's a tough district. I
think we just stick to who we are and what
we do offensively, sharing the basketball and then on defense,
just speeding teams up. You know, I like our chances

improved as a season is going on. Paige Seedy London

Then alexis Asenkobe. She is a double double just waiting
to happen fourteen points, nine rebounds, two steals, two assists

And then Bernard Laudermill varsity head coach is coached here
for the Big Reds on the boys side, Gonna go
with Tamara Hunter. She is a sophomore number two. Also,
Mariah Saye is back twenty points per game of the
six games she's played as a sophomore, says junior suit me.

Dykstra cutting back door to Slanger. Nice catch in traffic

So that's the second time Slangers had the ball down low,
in a good position to score, but just not going
up strong, thinking there's gonna be contact there.

And once she had the one on the break, the
same thing happened. Look at that downloaded Dykes ting to
finish and one she was the inboundcer threw it in
the corner ossacome. Then they clear everyone out just to
lob over the top that time and got position on Martin,
who picks up the fire.

Martin just didn't get a good base there, kind of
got pushed out of the way and dykester with the
easy path and Martin just couldn't resist and got her
with the foul.

Dykstra knocks down the free throw to convert the three

look at Wes Cathock, if they want to get back
to the Brusln Center, especially being a senior leader. You
heard Derrek piece talk about that they're asking her to
be a little bit more aggressive. I like how they
went to her in the post early against the size
of the big Reds.
