Speaker 1 (00:00):
Yeah, I appreciate you calling in. Congrats on the win.
You know, first of all, you know, it's unfortunate half
the league gets eliminated last night, but half of those
were by by friendly fire, so to speak, right with
the with the SVC versus SVC, which we never liked,
but I don't think people understand the challenge, particularly for
the favorite to play a team that third time. Talk

(00:23):
to me about the challenges that that presented you with
Ain't Trace.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Yeah, I think everybody knows. You know, z Ain't Trace
has been a great challenge for us this year. I've
played them twice, you know, once early in the season
and then once just about a week ago, and both
times kind of gave us fits. It's a tough matchup
for us. They spread us out and do a really
good job of doing some nice things. And I felt
like last night we went into the game and done

(00:49):
different things. You know, we go to the lot man
the man, which is uncommon for us. I think we
only played about three possessions of zone last night, which
is unusual. But our kids arted really really well and
held him to four points in the first half. Struggled
to scoring the basketball, you know, Ali baker Land four
points last night. I think if you would have told
Jane Trace that they would have held her to four,

(01:10):
they would have felt pretty good about things. But you know,
our other players that we've been talking about a lot
did a nice job of stepping up and making some shots,
and how he did a real good job getting the
basketball to the right places and was able to come
out with a win and move on well, coach.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
One of the stats that jumped out at me was
a Baker with five assists on a night where you
only scored thirty three points. So that's obviously an important
stat of her getting some other people involved. But you know,
the thirty three points just something Zane Trace did to you.
Just described the game to us a little bit on
how offensively you struggled to get it into the basket.

Speaker 2 (01:48):
You know, the first couple of times we played them,
they played a triangle too and done a little bit
of you know, done things to try to take Ali
away and even Leo Way at the second time. And
last night Josh came in with a good game plant
and they played straight two three kind of a flat
two three zone, you know, picked us up in the
scrimmage area and done a really good job of finding
our shooters, and give them credit, they did a really

(02:10):
good job making things tough on us. You know, we
just from the perimeter. We just didn't put the basketball
in the hole. But I would give Brayley Halsworth credit.
She had fifteen points last night. I'm not sure how
many I don't have in front of me, how many
rebounds she had, but really controlled the glass and really
controlled the game and the paint. You know, in the Houston.
Such a good player and does a nice job, and

(02:31):
it was a battle in there last night. But I
felt like Brayley kind of had a look in her
eye last night that she was definitely not being ready
to be finished playing basketball. And again, our kids just
played extremely hard. We were without the A. A. Smith
last night, and Span A bush At steps up and
started for us and really descended well last night. And again,
when you when you hold somebody in varsity basketball game
four points in the first half, you know you can't

(02:53):
fault our kids' effort and what they.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
Done on the defensive end, well, no question that was
that was certainly jumped out at me as well. You know,
the biggest key is when you give up twenty six.
That's that's gonna be hard for the team to upset you.
So coach, we come full circle from last year. We
get this Hunt and Alexander match up here back down
at Waverley, this time at the downtown Gym. Is that correct?

Speaker 2 (03:14):
Yes?

Speaker 1 (03:14):
Yeah, you know Alexander, Alexander, we talked earlier in the year.
You played them a really, really good guard play. I
thought that was one of the best postseason games I
watched last year. You guys come up on the short
end of that this year. You know, in the matchup,
it felt like you you did some really good things
against them. Just kind of talk us through that match
up here on the Monday night. In terms of that.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
Rematch, Yeah, we were talking today in practice. You know,
it's kind of a rubber match. I think we both
know a lot about each other. We played last year,
we've already played once this year, and again it'll be
a battle. They got really good players, they're very well coached,
play in a good conference. Just got a good win
a couple of weeks ago against Athens, and I mean
they're playing much better basketball right now than they probably

(03:56):
were when in the middle of the season they kind
of went through little spell there where they lost a
few games even after they played us, And but you know,
we're we're we'll be ready for the challenge of course,
going back and trying to watch a lot of film
right now and get our kids ready over the next
three days. Looking forward to to Monday night and a
really good basketball game and a really good atmosphere for
our kids to be able to play. And you know,

(04:18):
we're just happy that we're getting to play in the
downtown gym. You know, that's kind of for us. That's
kind of our combo from the girls standpoint. Just a
great venue for our girls to play in. And I
think it'll be you know, we're the we're the second
game that night, play at eight o'clock. It should be
a good crowd, and I'm just excited for our kids
get the opportunity to do that.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
Yeah, no question, Alexander advances. That game, they knocked out
an SVC opponent, Southeastern fifty three forty three. You know, Kyle,
I don't know if this matters or not. I know
you and Southeastern don't really mirror each other and stylistically,
but knowing Southeastern, is that is that a film that
you can kind of take a look at because you
know Southeastern so well and kind of get a feel
for what Alexander was trying to do to them.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
Yeah. Absolutely, I think that's definitely a game we can
look at, and you know, got a few more that
you can take a look at too, But again, you know,
Southeastern played a lot of his own last night. It
gives us, you know, the opportunity to look at you know,
what they're going to do against the zone. But again,
we were kind of so familiar with each other. I
think it's going to be more about execution and kind
of how we play. And again, putting the basketball in

(05:18):
the hole I think is going to be a big
thing Monday night. You know the team that puts it
in the hole of most times. I know that's kind
of cliche, but again I think you know, they scored
fifty three points last night, I think against Southeastern, and
you know we're we're definitely going to have to score
more points than we don't. We have the last few
games to be able to make sure we got a
chance to win this one.

Speaker 3 (05:38):
Congratulations on your one hundredth coaching win. Can you talk
about what your overall experiencing, Your overall experience coaching at
your alma mater has been for you. What has that
been like?

Speaker 2 (05:56):
You know, it's it's been great, great to be back.
You know, my coaching career started, you know, at Westball
many years ago, you know, with Matt Hoops, and we
were talking a little bit about that, and I reminiscent
last night of those days. And you know, just I've
been around a lot of great coaches. And I had
the opportunity to coach Larry Jordan for three seasons and

(06:16):
I learned so much, and you know, broke into the
head coaching ranks at Southeastern for five years and you know,
I had a good run there before going to administrative route.
But you know, you just get to one hundred wins again,
I keep laughing and say, if you play enough games,
you're going to get to one hundred at some point.
But I'm just great players, great coaches that have been

(06:38):
with me. But it's been fun, just like watching our
kids and win that game last night and have a
chance to celebrate having them over to the house with
Petevill last night. That you know, that's what it's all about,
is our kids and our communities really bought into our
girls basketball program. They've always you know, been bought in
the girls and boys basketball at Huntington. There's there's not
much else to do out there during the winter months.
It's just fun to see everybody come together and we

(07:00):
look forward to continuing this. I felt like our kids,
you know, the last couple of weeks, really want to
keep this thing going. And at the end of the day,
that's what it's about about seeing those kids smiling and
having the opportunity to continue to coach.

Speaker 1 (07:11):
And well coach. You know, you've been so good to
call every week before we get you off here, this
one last time highlight your seniors for us.

Speaker 2 (07:19):
Yeah, so, Ali Baker, I mean, everybody knows what al
he's done for our program. This senior class. You know
we were looking at you know, my wife's the one,
and of course you know you've helped I think dig
up some stats from the Southeastern side. I think my
me bringing up to my wife a few weeks back
that this class had a chance to win over sixty
games in their career is kind of what spurred that
one hundred win things. I had no idea till the

(07:41):
other night when they told me that I we won
a hundred games. But we you know, this senior class
has won sixty two games, has a chance to win
sixty three on Monday night. But Ali's been a you know,
has been a big person in that quest. And she
she's done a good job. Like I've told you all year,
she works on her craft. She's going to be a
good college basketball player, has a great future ahead of her.

(08:01):
And again it's just just been great to have Liam
McCluskey does a great job for us again. You know,
she's one of those kids that comes in every day
and she's kind of a hard hat kid. She she
she works and works. And Savannah bush Hat does does
a great job for us off the bench, you know
comes you know, she's our sixth man last night had
to be thrust in the starting lineup again. She could

(08:23):
play the one through the five and knows every spot.
And it's just a great kid to be around. And
then Kaylee Kendall's the same way. You know, comes in
with a great attitude every day and just just great
kids to be around. You know, our parents have raised
them well and it's been fun to get the ability
to coach them over the last four years.

Speaker 1 (08:43):
Well, coach, can thank you enough for calling each and
every week. Best best the luck next week. I know,
senior wise mcclousy at seven last night, Baker coming up
on on eleven fifty over on her career, and then
you mentioned those other role players so so important to
the program. But I've just I really appreciate how you
call in each week and and uh talk about your

(09:03):
kids and and uh that's what makes the show go.

Speaker 2 (09:06):
We appreciate everything you guys do. And good luck to
everybody else down the tournament trail.
