Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, I appreciate you your calling in again this week.
You know, a tough one to night. I'm gonna be honest.
I I called the logan Alchila Coffee came last week,
and I walked away from that and then continued to
think all week long that, you know, their overall record
kind of buffaloes me a little bit, but they're very,
very talented bunch and led by an outstanding player. And
and and that's where I wanted to start with you

(00:21):
and the defensive challenge. I feel sometimes when when you're
when you're going up against a young man of that
talent level, it really can put you in the middle
sometimes because he's so good, he's gonna get his And
then a lot of times, h the role players that
are around him were able to shoot the three. As
I was getting some updates tonight, it seemed like a
little bit of both was happening. Is that accurate in

(00:43):
terms of where it was maybe hurting you defensively a
little bit?

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Yeah, it kind of seemed like, you know, when when
the game started, we did a pretty good job of
keeping the Maya out of paint, but we had a
lot of help and he did a really good job
of being detail with passing getting it to the teams
and their shooting pocket. They have a quick release, so
it's tough to really recover because their shooters get rid

(01:06):
of the ball, they're ready to catch and shoot off
his penetration. And you know, just right to start the game,
we talked about, you know, really where we wanted to
help and our game plan wise, uh and we and
we gave help. And then you know, some of his
support players that maybe don't usually score a ton had

(01:27):
some really good games tonight, and they they hit back
to back threes off of our help to start the game,
and then that gave them some confidence. And I think that,
you know, overall, I don't think we played bad. I
think that Logan Elm came in and played with great energy,
played with a lot of physicality defensively. And you know,

(01:48):
it wasn't just the Maia tonight. I thought several guys
for them played well. I think their scoring went something
like na Maia had twenty three and then they had
like fifteen, nine, eight and eight, so they were pretty
balanced overall. No after we you know, we were kind

(02:10):
of trailing most of the game, but it was kind
of staying between two to five points. I mean, it
wasn't anything like we just we would tie it and
we couldn't ever get the lead. But they pushed their
lead to eight I think in the third quarter, and
we called time out, challenged our kids just about you know,
having some toughness, playing with some grit and coming down

(02:31):
getting to stop, and then we're able to then come
out and we closed that gap and I think we
tied it, and their other kids weren't really making plays
like they were earlier in the game. And then the
Maya came down and I think he hit four threes
in a row in the fourth quarter, and again I

(02:52):
think that stitched the lead to eight again with about
two minutes left, and we called time out and we
went diamond pressed, which we don't tip it do. But
again the Oar kids credit they executed well. They played
extremely hard, they believed that they still out a chance
to win. And then I think Ezra rip A hit
a three with about six seconds to go to push

(03:14):
the game into overtime.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
Well I heard it was a big time shot, and
you know, I guess that's that's where I want to
go next, is is you're getting closer and closer to postseason,
you're playing that level of opponent and that especially led
by such a gifted player, the ability for the kids
to come back just talk to coach to day about
doing something you don't always do. You obviously have an

(03:36):
experienced group, A high IQ group is kind of the
way I see them. I don't get to coach them
every day, but your kids seem like they have a
good feel for the game. That's really important to be
able to to go to that out of a time
out and be able to execute it going in the tournament.
I think that's a big deal.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
Yeah, I mean, I honestly I felt better tonight about
our loss than I have some of our wins. So
I think as a coach, when you when you look
at it, and you can't always look at your wins
and losses. I think that Loganol played really well. I
thought that we showed some grit and we showed some
fight there in the second half. But again, you know,

(04:14):
I just thought Logano played probably about as well as
I've seen him play this year, and I thought that
they guarded us really well, and I just thought it
was overall a good high school basketball game. And I'm
proud of you know, getting down by eight there in
the third, coming back and tightening up the game again Unamaia,
like you said, as a very skilled, great player. He

(04:36):
made some really really tough shots to stretch their lead again.
But again, you know, like you said, we we made
some adjustments and came out and then we closed the
gap again able to push it into overtime. Just uh.
And then in overtime we had Ezra basically at the
same spot that he had just made a three and
his shot was in and out and I mean that

(04:59):
thing was really it looked like it was going down
and themmed out and then they went to transition and
again another uh, you know, player Zamee Seemer, who isn't
one of their primary scorers but it's definitely capable, steps
out hit a three and that was just kind of
like gave them a little bit of life again and
hope and and you know, first first team that scores

(05:19):
an overtime uh usually has that advantage, especially with both
teams being in the bonus.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
Yeah, no question. You have one more question for you, coach,
before I let you talk about your seniors. I just
wanted to get a pulse on your offensive end going
into the postseason here, I still think you have what
Didton County remaining and then you get into the postseason.
I don't have that in front of me Nelsonville. Is
that correct on your drawl? Yeah, we had enough familiar talk.
Talk to me a little bit about where you feel

(05:46):
like you're offensively obviously with with Jared on the mix there,
with Stuart and Robinson McCalla rip of Houston, you obviously
have six guys that can really really score the basketball.
Do you like where you're at rhythm wise? You feel
like you you found the rhythm you're looking for one
in the postseason.

Speaker 2 (06:04):
A little bit. I mean, I think we're still trying
to get more paint touches off the dribble. I think that,
you know, tonight it was kind of a struggle for
us to get the ball to the paint. Sometimes it's
just our mentality of, uh, you know, we look to
swing the ball, but sometimes we look to swing the
ball too much instead of when we're getting on the
wing really being aggressive and forcing help and you know,

(06:26):
then we can kick from the paint or look for
Gunner a little bit more. But you know, I think
that we have been scoring the ball better since LJ
has been back, But we also push the ball a
little bit better in transition. I feel really good about
where we're at transition. But half court wise, you know, LOGANOWLM,
even though they don't have the wins that they've had, Uh,

(06:48):
they really like to get out and switch and guard you.
And if you can rip through and get by them,
you can get you can get to the rim. But
you know, I just thought they did a really good
job of guardaring us and guarding our guards. We finally
started to kind of have that mentality in the fourth
quarter and overtime, and our guards did a really good
job of getting fout or getting to the paint and

(07:11):
being aggressive. I just think we need to have that
mentality a little bit sooner in the game.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
Well, coach, you know, we're fororking with some ideas on
some different things for some different types of show here
in the next week or two, but for as far
as basketball in terms of this format, this is probably
going to be it. You've been so good to call,
so I definitely don't want to cheat an opportunity to
talk about your seniors.

Speaker 2 (07:34):
Yeah, so our seniors. You know, we have six seniors
this year, Layne and Robinson has just been really steady
and been a great player for US and has been
a great leader and really appreciate all the work that
he's put in and kind of was one of the
first players that I talked to when I got the
job over the summer and he immediately was bought in

(07:55):
and I think he was a good leader for us
over the summer and just has had a really good year.
Lannon Jerrold again very unfortunate with his injury and soccer
and missing half the year, but at the same time,
you know, over the summer he was a great leader.
These seniors. They are great culture kids that they have
really high character and it's just been a joy to

(08:17):
be around him. I think LJ is going to be
a great coach one day. Hopefully he decides to go
that route. I know he wants to be a teacher,
and I think, you know, like you mentioned alluded to,
he does, all of our seniors really have good basketball IQ.
And then Noah Houston has just been you know, anything
we asked him to do, started early, we asked him

(08:38):
to go off the bench. He just wants to do
whatever's best for the team. He's one of the best
teammates that I've ever coached, always a great attitude, and
you know, I can't really say enough about our seniors
as a group. And then Ezra Rippeth again had a
really good game tonight. He was battling some sickness yesterday,
had e laite practice, but I think he had eleven

(09:00):
and all of it was in the fourth quarter and
over time, I believe. But he's had some really good
moments this year for us and has played really hard
and been a really good teammate and easy to coach.
And Judah Hanks is another one who didn't play last
year but came out and has gotten better and better
as the season has gone on, and has had a
lot of meaningful minutes. You know, he was on the

(09:22):
floor at the end of our big Jackson wins and
gives us the presence defensively and has just you know,
same as the other seniors, been a great kid to
be around and makes practice fun and enjoyable. And then
Killen Larson. It was able to come back senior night
and he was able to sport in the Huntington game.
And this week he's really been busting his rear in

(09:46):
practicing really on one leg, you know, and doing whatever
he can to make us better in practice. And he's
still struggling to run a little bit, but you know
he gives everything that he has and puts unfortunate with
his you know, broken foot from football, but you know
has been right there every moment helping us in practice,
whether he's able to practice or running the clock or

(10:07):
whatever we can getting to do well.

Speaker 1 (10:10):
Coach, can't thank you enough for calling all year. That
is a really, really impressive group of seniors. You just
went over there having an outstanding season. Seventeen and four.
One more regular season game, I know, WKKJ. I'll have
you on the tournament trail starting with Nelsonville. So so
best of luck to you here in the in the
final regular season game and end of the postseason.

Speaker 2 (10:29):
All right, I appreciate it. Thank you,
