(00:08):
Hello. Once again, it istime for another episode of Cool Story Bro.
I'm Walt. I'm here with ChristaHigh. It's been a while.
I know it's the new year, and I'm very excited to talk about,
like our twenty twenty three recap, everything that excited us last year. I'm
gonna go ahead and jump in becauseI was very excited about when we were
young fest. Now, obviously thefirst when we were young came out in

(00:33):
the prior year. But with thosethings, I always wonder when it's the
first, is this going to last? Is this just a cash grab?
Or is there actually Like, becauseI'm very emo, right right, I
never go We've established this. Inever grew out of my emo phase.
So was this like a genuine attemptat a resurgence. Was it capturing this
momentum that I feel like platforms likeTikTok and Instagram created within this like alternative

(00:59):
community or was it just a cashgrab We're going to try to capitalize off
this and then we'll be gone. But the second variation of it, it
came back A and then B.It performed really well, sold out ridiculously
fast. I was in the queuefor tickets for like five minutes before they
sold out, and I feel likethey really listened to feedback from the first

(01:19):
year and they made these improvements andpeople were happier, and it sounds like
they're going to be doing again fora third year. So I'm very excited.
I think it's I think it's it'snot a cash grab, but I
think the promoters go, like, there's a resurgence, these bands are viable.
Let's do a thing where we packagethis group and we'll see what flies.

(01:40):
And it worked very well, andit worked so well. They actually
did it with New Metal and that'swhere Sick New World came from, same
promoters in Vegas, and that's wentso well, it sold out in ten
minutes my band played, and thenthey're doing it again this year. So
I think it's just smart. It'sabsolutely smart, But I think it's also
just it just makes me excited becausethese were bands that I never grew out

(02:04):
of, right, and to seethe resurgence, like you talked about as
well, like Stabbing had a greatyear, you very much came up with
that resurgence. Yeah, and it'sactually boomeranging into a even bigger year this
year as we have a lot offestivals coming up that we're going to be
a part of. So excited aboutthat. So I think music festivals are
like on the rise. I thinkthey were big last year, and I

(02:25):
think they're going to be even biggerhere in twenty twenty four. And I'm
especially excited because Stabbing is coming toChicago. Yes, I finally get to
see you play. Oh yeah,as long as they don't put you on
the band list like like the BA N N ED, Oh, don't
do it, don't do it.We want everybody to be here. Fantastic.

(02:46):
There were also some like new bandscoming up last year that I was
excited about. Do you have anythat you like saw last year? Take
a guess? I literally cannot guess. Sleep Token Oh sleep Token, Yeah.
I mean it turns out they werethe number one most streamed band on
Spotify, oh wow, which fortwenty twenty three, at least as far

(03:08):
as new albums go. Their albumwas so amazing. The thing about it
is is all these different styles andsounds in one album that it's it pleases
so many people, It touches somany people. Metallica put out an album
last year which is huge, camein second. It didn't stream as much
as sleep Token, so there wasdefinitely the buzz on that band. Saw

(03:30):
them at Riotfest and they lived upto the hype and I was so blown
away and I can't wait for themto come back, which I think they're
going to be doing a tour herelater this year. I think here in
the States. I'll have to catchthat because, yeah, you put me
onto sleep Token. They're like meand like my boyfriend Brian's like favorite band.
Now. Very excited about them.I didn't get a chance to see
them at riot Fest. Hopefully theycome back. Well yeah if they If

(03:51):
they do come back, then youdefinitely have to go. Another band I
was excited about was never tell thisis a band that I showed you.
They have a sort of Lincoln Parkfeel where they have it's rock, but
they have the rapper. But Ithink even more so than that, their
vibe and their flow. I don'twant to say similar necessarily, but it
was reminiscent of maybe inspired by isa better choice of words. Yeah,

(04:15):
which made me very happy because againvery email. Well we're to that point
to where like a Lincoln Park cameout, you know, twenty years ago.
Yeah, and so they came upand influenced the crop of people that
are coming up now, and youcan hear that, and it's just that's
how evolution works in music. Youknow. It's like you are influenced by

(04:35):
bands from the seventies or the eighties, and then you know, you repackage
it with the other stuff that you'rehearing in the nineties, and now you've
got something new, and it justkeeps on rolling over like that. So
yes, inspired by Lincoln Park, but yet still new and fresh for the
current generation, which I absolutely love. I've also was very cited Blink.

(04:56):
Yeah, obviously came back. Wereyou as excited about that as me?
No? Not not as excited asyou. But look, I think they
made an amazing album and it touchesmy heart because like they, you know,
had their split and Tom went anddid his thing with angels and airwaves
and UFOs and movies and stuff likethat. But then and Mark had cancer

(05:19):
and Travis had a plane accident andwouldn't fly forever, and like they had
all kinds of bad stuff happened intheir lives for ten plus years, and
then they bring it back together andthey wrote this amazing album where they could
still in their fun, youthful waytalk about some really big life things that
the older audience that grew up withthem can identify with. I think that's

(05:42):
magic when you can still have thatyouthful quality that you had twenty years ago
in your heyday and still package thatbut be speaking about bigger things one more
time. The title track from thenew album, you know, think about
it because you know, one thismight be the last time, one more
time to do something. It's likemore adult themes than what they normally talk
about when you know, take offyour pants and jacket. So it's a

(06:06):
state of the anima and it's likeit's uhm of the state. It's heavier
thing. So it's really cool music, the ultimate unifier because and even thinking
exactly what you just said, likebecause you are gen X yes, yes,
yes, so you're gen X.I to think about that X.
Yes. I know it's hard whenyou're on the cusp. I'm a millennial,
but by three years I'm on thecusp of gen z Z. Yeah

(06:29):
so it is. But yeah,so like obviously so like you're familiar with
them, you enjoyed the album,I really love the album. And then
going to their show I saw alot of younger people because unfortunately I'm no
longer in a category, so I'mi am an old now, which is
devastating. But yeah, there's alot of young people there too, so
they are talking about these, like, like you said, these heavy topics,

(06:50):
but it spanned across generation and Ithink that's magical. I think that's
a very special thing that not everyband can do. Now, this next
thing, I'm very so things thatwe're looking forward to in twenty twenty four.
I'll start with you because I havethings that I want to talk about
that I think are going to beabsolutely wild to you. Okay, I
have a little list, very excitedabout some new albums coming out and my

(07:12):
list of albums. Green Day Saviorsit comes out very soon here this month,
in January, and everything I've heardfrom it so far sounds amazing.
Probably the best thing they've done sinceAmerican Idiot, done by the same people,
same production team as well. Soexcited about that Pearl Jam album.
Hopefully Fingers Crossed come in this yearand apparently it's heavier than we would expect.

(07:34):
And Mike McCready, the guitar player, is referencing it comparing it to
early Pearl Jam records like the firstone, So I'm all about that.
Would love to hear that. Thisguy, Billy Morrison, he's a guitar
player for the Cult. He's gota solo album coming out in April,
and he's got some great players onit, John Five, who now plays

(07:54):
with Motley Crue, Al Jorgerson, the Ministry. I can't think of some
of the other bigger players. Ozsie'son it, so it's gonna be really
great. I want to hear allof these people bounce ideas off of everybody.
This album that I have been workingon for the past year, Ayatoya,
is gonna finally come out this year, and it's some of the most
fun music I've created in a longtime working with Anya, and it's like

(08:18):
incredible. So I can't wait forthat album to come out later in the
year. But there's gonna be littlesingles every couple of months. I'm just
so excited. I'm gonna have tointerview you all about your new album.
That'll have to be a future episode. Ooh cool, we could get we
need to get Anya on here.Yes, Oh that's so exciting. Yeah.
So there's a lot of good musiccoming out in twenty twenty four that

(08:39):
I'm excited about. So something I'mexcited about. I to be very clear,
this is not this is a newdiscovery to me, but this band
is not new. I discovered thembecause I listened to a band called Bring
Me the Horizon. Sure, andthey do. They've got new music coming
out this year they do, whichis very exciting. But they did a
collab with this group they're called babyMetal. Oh really, did have you

(09:00):
heard? Of course? Okay,so you already knew, Okay. I
thought this was gonna blow your mind, and then I did. They are
incredible players, That's what I waswatching their videos on TikTok and first of
all, the control they have ofthe crowd, that's credible, crazy,
insane. I was watching them andtheir crowd, movement by movement everything.
They're like conductors of an orchestra. The way they control this crowd. I've

(09:22):
never seen anything like it, andI've have you never seen anything like it.
I think they've lost a member.I think they used to be four
and now they're three. But man, it's like there's there's some other There's
a band that played Lalla last yearthat was also a group of Japanese ladies
and they they were incredible. Iwatched the live stream. I was like,
I wish I could be right downthe road in the park to see

(09:43):
it. It's exciting. I loveseeing these women in metal commands such a
huge audience and and do it well. It's great, fantastic. The other
thing, okay, I know youdefinitely haven't heard of this one though.
There is an artist called Boy WhatBoy What Boy What? And their whole
thing is they use AI technology tohave payroll. Yeah, so they make

(10:09):
the songs, but they have theyuse the AI technology to have Plankton and
SpongeBob from SpongeBob SquarePants to do thevocals. Now, this is what's wild
though. I'm gonna have you listento this song because is it Plankton and
SpongeBob. Yes, but I haveto tell you I've been listening to this
song NonStop, on repeat. It'sin my bones, it's affecting my mood.

(10:31):
I'm going feral over this song. It's called Neon Tide Side AI Failed.

(11:07):
What's the band called again? BoyWhat? All right? So the
thing about it is it's a coolsong, yes, I mean almost like,
why did you have to do thelittle novelty bit of aid. Yeah,
why do you have to do that? Because if you just put your
own voice on it, you gota great rock song right there now.
To me, and this is justme, I'm not a novelty song guy.

(11:28):
Yeah, and so like I shrugit off and I don't take it
as seriously as it could be.But that's I do. So I do
agree with that actually, because thereare like I said, I've been listening
to this song on repeat. Iabsolutely love it because the song itself is
solid and it could have been areally good song. And I do agree
that the novelty of it being likeI don't mind that it's planked in,

(11:50):
but talking about like SpongeBob and thingslike that cut does kind of, like
as a listener, deter you abit. But I also see the marketing
advantage of it because some smiliarly withuh, there's a really popular like M
artist Marshmallow. Yeah, of course, bucket with a giant well you see
whatever is on his head. Howmuch DM do you listen to? Well,
I'm not that much anymore, butlike I know who he is.

(12:11):
But he also had pop songs andhe had alternative songs with best deal.
So I mean like he's been inthe circles doing the thing. But yeah,
he was an artist before that, before Marshmallow ever became a thing.
I don't even and this is embarrassing. I don't even remember what his artist
name was before he wasn't grabbing alot. And then the bucket works.
It works. We're saying, thebucket works. The bucket works nice.

(12:33):
What else? Are you looking forwardto? More podcasts with you? Ah?
Me too? Me too? Thisis it's always fun to talk about
music. And I know that thereare people who are listening that I for
some reason, they actually enjoy listeningto us pontificate about things. So I'm
gonna be exciting some some tours andfestivals, live shows coming up. That's
always exciting for me. The Stonesare coming, all the shows at Wrigley

(12:56):
with it, you know, whetherit's step Leppard or Green Day with Smashing
Pumpkins playing Wrigley for the first time. That's gonna be really great because that's
such a special place for Billy. It's gonna be a good summer of stuff.
And if sleep Token comes through, that's gonna be a great show.
And then all of the festivals andall of the stabbing shows that we're gonna
be doing. I'm gonna be abusy guy this year, and you're gonna

(13:18):
put me on the guest list, not the band list, not the band
with two ends list. No,I'll pull, you'll get in, You'll
be there. Yes, awesome, you heard it first. We're holding well
to this. Well, it's gonnabe a good twenty twenty four. I'm
excited for more podcasts too,
