Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, San Antonio, are you ready to dive into all
the local happenings this week. We've got a mix of
must know news and some fun surprises you might have missed.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
It really is a diverse mix this week.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
Yeah, We've come through tons of local articles and announcements
all to give you that inside scoop on what's going
on in our city.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
It is fascinating to see the range this week, everything
from potential snow flurries to K pop concerts and some
big news for local students. It's all happening here.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
Speaking of things that are happening, Yeah, well, the Texas
weather is always keeping us guessing. Oh it is right now,
we're enjoying some really pleasant warmth. It's like low sixties.
But hold onto your hats because a big freeze is
coming this weekend.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
Yeah, a big one. It looks like temperatures will drop
near freezing Saturday night. That's a pretty big swing.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
It is. And you know, it's unusual for us here
to see such a fast shift in temperature.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
You're right about that, and it doesn't stop there next week.
It's even more interesting. Tuesday could actually see record lows
in the thirties.

Speaker 1 (00:56):
Wow, And there's even a chance of a wintry mix,
especially Monday night into Tuesday morning. Can you imagine snow
or ice in San Antonio?

Speaker 2 (01:06):
I know it would be something to see. We'll have
to keep an eye on that, especially if you're playing
to attend the Mlkday March on Monday.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
That's a great point. With the wind chill, it'll feel
like the teens or even twenties, So definitely bundle up.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
Good advice. Now, how about we shift gears from the
potential chill to something a little heartwarming. Okay, Bird Bakery,
the local favorite, is doing something really sweet to help
those affected by the wildfires in California. They're donating all
the proceeds from their strawberry lemonade cupcakes to the LA
Fire Department.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
I love that. It's so great to see our local
businesses using their platform to do good.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
Me too, And it makes you think about the connections
between different places. You know, you might not think about
California when you bite into a cupcake, but the state
actually supplies a huge amount of strawberries across the US.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
Yeah, so it's a reminder that events happening elsewhere can
definitely ribble out closer to home. And while we're on
the topic of indulging, those culinaria restaurant weeks are almost here.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
Oh yeah, From January eighteenth to February first, you can
treat yourself to these amazing multi course meals at some
of San Antonio's best restaurants.

Speaker 1 (02:14):
That's right, and they have set prices. You can get
brunch for twenty five dollars, lunch for twenty to thirty dollars,
or dinner for thirty five, forty five dollars or fifty
five dollars.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
It's a great opportunity to check out our amazing culinary
scene without spending a fortune.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
I agree, and with so many restaurants participating, it's the
perfect time to try something new or revisit an old favorite.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
Absolutely now, food isn't the only thing on the menu
this week. San Antonio's entertainment scene is booming. There's so
much going on.

Speaker 1 (02:42):
You're right about that, okay. K pop fans, listen up.
BTS member Jhope is bringing his solo tour to the
Frost Bank Center.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
On March twenty six and twenty seventh.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
YEP, this is huge for San Antonio's K pop community
and it just shows how our city is attracting big
international acts.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
It really does and becoming a destination for fans from
all all over.

Speaker 1 (03:00):
Tickets for Jay Hope show go on sale January twenty third.
Don't forget to market calendars.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
Oh and I have another one for you. If you're
into anime or manga, you have to check out the
Sailor Moon Musical. It's coming to the Majestic Theater right
Marsh eighteenth. It's a really cool blend of live performance
in Japanese pop culture. Tickets for that one go on
sale January thirty first.

Speaker 1 (03:19):
Cool. Now, for anyone who loves a good laugh with us,
the legendary Gabriel Fluffy Iglesias is coming to the Laugh
Out Loud Comedy Club this weekend.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
He has shows all weekend from Friday to Sunday, so
you have plenty of chances to catch him.

Speaker 1 (03:33):
Nice and if you're up for a little road trip
this weekend, the Curveville Renaissance Festival is going on.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
It's just a short drive away and it takes place
over three weekends January eighteenth and nineteenth, twenty fifth and
twenty sixth, and February first and second.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
It's like stepping back in time with all the performers, games, contests, crafts,
you name it, they have it.

Speaker 2 (03:52):
It's definitely a one of a kind experience. And speaking
of unique experiences, let's talk about some of the awesome
local initiatives making a difference right here in San Antonio.

Speaker 1 (04:01):
Sounds good.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
First up, if you're looking for a way to kickstart
your fitness journey, San Antonio Sports Activate is offering a
free fitness.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
Program free tell me More.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
It's amazing. They have tons of different classes and wellness sessions.
You can find everything from high energy body combat and
zoomba to calming, yoga, and even cooking demos.

Speaker 1 (04:20):
And they're making it fun and rewarding.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
Yeah, you can earn points for attending classes and completing
health screenings. Then you can use those points to get
free stuff like T shirts and gift cards. It's a
great way to stay motivated.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
That is now for those who want to get involved
in protecting our environment, The Salato Creek Cleanup is this Saturday.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
It's the biggest one day river cleanup in Texas. A
great way to give back to the community and protect
our natural resources.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
Awesome. Just remember to dress for the occasion long pants
closed host shoes and work gloves are a must.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
Good point. And how about this for something totally unique
and fun San Antonio is a Rodeo themed pop up
bar called the Dusty Diamond.

Speaker 1 (05:00):
No way where is this?

Speaker 2 (05:01):
It's at the Intercontinental Riverwalk Hotel. Of course, they've gone
all out with the western decor, a mechanical bowl, and
even Rodeo inspired cocktails.

Speaker 1 (05:09):
I love it.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
It's open until March second, so you have plenty of
time to check it out.

Speaker 1 (05:13):
While we're on the topic of unique things happening in
San Antonio, we have to celebrate the achievements of some
of our amazing students.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
I agree, we have some really outstanding students here.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
First up, Fabian Rodriguez from Legacy Middle School was selected
to represent Texas in the Math Counts National competition.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
Wow. That's a huge deal. Math Counts is super competitive.
Fabian selection speaks volumes about his talent and dedication to math.

Speaker 1 (05:36):
Definitely. And we have another incredible stoom to celebrate, Fatima
Abuisha from East Central High School. She won the Presidential
Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
Wow. The PMST Award is the highest recognition for math
and science teachers in the US. It's a huge honor.

Speaker 1 (05:52):
These students are shining examples of the incredible potential we
have here in San Antonio. Now, let's shift gears to sports.
Our UTSA women's basketball team is on fire. They just
won their sixth straight conference game and.

Speaker 2 (06:05):
They defeated Memphis. It's the best starting conference play in
UTSA history.

Speaker 1 (06:09):
Amazing. Senior forward Jordan Jenkins led the team with seventeen
points and ten rebounds, and Idahudo got a double double
with twelve points and ten rebounds.

Speaker 2 (06:19):
What a team. Their next game is this Saturday at
one point zero zero pm against UAB.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
Let's go Roadrunners. On Monday, January twentieth, San Antonio will
be honoring the legacy of doctor Martin Luther King Junior
with the thirty eighth annual MLK Day March and celebration.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
It's a really powerful event for our city, a reminder
of doctor King's message and a call to action to
keep working towards a more just and equitable society.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
The day begins with a worship service at eight zero am,
then the two to five mile march starts at the
Martin Luther King Junior Academy and ends at Pittman Sullivan Park.

Speaker 2 (06:54):
And at the park there will be a huge celebration
with multicultural performances, health and wellness activities, a youth an area,
and tons of vendors.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
Don't forget about the free via bus service. It'll be
available from eight zero zero am to ten zero am
from Freeman colisem and Saint Philip's College, with return service
from noon to three point zero zero pm.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
And remember that cold front we talked about, dress warm.
If you're going to be outside for the march and celebrations,
a good call.

Speaker 1 (07:17):
It's always better to be prepared. Also, just a heads up,
the San Antonio Police Department has put some temporary drone
restrictions in place for.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
The march because of security concerns. It's a precaution to
make sure everyone at the event stays safe.

Speaker 1 (07:28):
Quick reminder. Monday is Martin Luther King Junior Day, a
federal holiday.

Speaker 2 (07:33):
So most government offices, banks, post offices, and schools will
be closed.

Speaker 1 (07:38):
Usps and ups will be closed, and FedEx will have
modified service plan ahead. Now, it's not all serious business
this week. We have some fun stuff happening too.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
Oh yeah, like National Popcorn day. It's January nineteenth, and
Cinemark Theaters has a deal you won't want to miss.
Tell me more, it's only five dollars to fill your
own container with popcorn up to four hundred ounces.

Speaker 1 (07:59):
Wow, it's a lot of popcorn.

Speaker 2 (08:00):
It is perfect for a movie marathon or just to
satisfy your popcorn cravings.

Speaker 1 (08:04):
All right, let's switch gears to some national news with
a local connection. The FDA recently announced a ban on
red dye No. Three in foods, dietary supplements, and oral medicines. Really,
they're concerned about potential cancer risks. I say, red dye No.
Three is used in so many things to get that
bright cherry red color, candy, baked goods, even some medications.

Speaker 2 (08:25):
Wow, I had no idea.

Speaker 1 (08:26):
Food companies have until twenty twenty seven. I agree.

Speaker 2 (08:36):
Now, this next bit of news is for all this
Saturday Night Live fans out there. Lorne Michaels, the creator
of the show, is donating his entire career archive to
the University of Texas.

Speaker 1 (08:45):
What that's incredible, think about all that history.

Speaker 2 (08:47):
I know. The donation includes rehearsal notes, scripts, behind the scenes,
photos of famous sketches, all kinds of amazing stuff.

Speaker 1 (08:54):
The Ransom Center at ut is planning to open an
exhibit in September. It's called Live from New York, The
Making of Lorne Michaels.

Speaker 2 (09:02):
I can't wait to see that. It's going to be
fascinated to get a peak behind the curtain of one
of the most iconic comedy shows ever.

Speaker 1 (09:08):
So there you have it. It's been a jam packed
week here in San Antonio. We've covered freezing temperatures, foody events,
amazing student achievements, national news with a local twist. What
are your initial thoughts?

Speaker 2 (09:20):
Well, I'm just amazed by how much is happening here,
the variety, the energy. San Antonio is a city that's
always on the move, but it still manages to keep
its unique charm.

Speaker 1 (09:30):
I agree, And while we've touched on a lot of
different topics, I think it's time to dive a little
deeper into something. Yeah, that's good. For instance, that upcoming freeze.
It's not just about bundling up. We have to think
about the potential impact on our infrastructure, especially after those
crazy winter storms that hit other parts of the country recently.

Speaker 2 (09:47):
You're right, we do take for granted those systems that
keep our city running smoothly. Events like this remind us
how important it is to be prepared and resilient.

Speaker 1 (09:57):
And speaking of resilience, that Slatto Creek cleanup is a
great example of how important it is to care for
our environment. It's not just about picking up trash, it's
about understanding our responsibility to protect our natural resources for
future generations.

Speaker 2 (10:11):
I totally agree. And on a lighter note, those Culinaria
restaurant weeks, they're not just about indulging in delicious food.
It's also about supporting our local restaurants and all the
talented chefs we have here in San Antonio exactly.

Speaker 1 (10:24):
So, as we move into Part two of our deep dive,
we'll be exploring these themes in more depth, connecting the
dots between seemingly unrelated events, and uncovering the stories that
shape our city.

Speaker 2 (10:35):
Looking forward to it. You know, it's funny. As we
were discussing that upcoming freeze and those tempting Culinaria menus,
it really got me thinking about community and how San
Antonians always seemed to band together.

Speaker 1 (10:47):
I see what you mean. We saw that spirit in
action with Bird Bakery stepping up to support the wildfire
relief and of course, with events like the MLKA Day
March and the Salado Creek cleanup, there's definitely this feeling
of shared purpose here.

Speaker 2 (11:01):
Yeah, absolutely a real willingness to lend a helping hand,
to support each other and to work together to make
our city better.

Speaker 1 (11:09):
And it's not just those big events either. It's the
little things too, you know, the everyday acts of kindness,
that quick wave to a neighbor, holding the door for someone,
that feeling of watching out for each other.

Speaker 2 (11:20):
Those small gestures really do make a difference. They create
this feeling of belonging, like we're all part of something
bigger than ourselves. And that sense of community runs deep
in San Antonio.

Speaker 1 (11:30):
It does. It's been nurtured and passed down for generations.
You can hear it in the way people talk about their neighborhoods,
their families, their history here right.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
It's that shared history, those stories and traditions that bind
us together. It creates a feeling of continuity even as
the city keeps growing and changing.

Speaker 1 (11:46):
Speaking of history, that Curveville Renaissance Festival is a fun
way to take a step back in time. It reminds
us that history isn't just dates and facts. It's about
the human experience, the stories of the people who came
before us.

Speaker 2 (12:00):
And it's also about having fun and letting go of
reality for a bit. The Renaissance Festival lets us escape
the everyday world and step into a realm of imagination.

Speaker 1 (12:10):
That's true. And those student achievements we talked about earlier,
they really highlight the incredible potential and bright future of
San Antonio.

Speaker 2 (12:18):
You're right about that. Fabian Rodriguez competing in the Math
Counts national competition and Fatima Abuisha winning that Paymst Award,
those are incredible accomplishment.

Speaker 1 (12:27):
They're not just talented kids. They also reflect the hard
work of their teachers and families and the support of
the community.

Speaker 2 (12:33):
Exactly. They represent the next generation, the innovators, the leaders,
the problem solvers who will shape the future of our city,
and their success stories inspire us to support education and
create opportunities for all young people to succeed.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
Absolutely. Now, we talked about the rapid pace of change
happening in San Antonio, and it's exciting to see the
city grow and evolve, but it also makes you think
about how we manage that growth and ensure that it
benefits everyone.

Speaker 2 (13:00):
It's a balancing act. For sure. We want to encourage
progress and innovation, but we also need to preserve those
things that make San Antonio unique, that sense of community,
the connection to our history and culture, that special charm
that sets us apart.

Speaker 1 (13:13):
You're right, it's about finding that sweet spot between honoring
the past and embracing the future, creating a city that's
both modern and authentic, dynamic and welcoming.

Speaker 2 (13:23):
And I think San Antonio is doing a great job
of that. You see it in the way historic neighborhoods
are being revitalized, the growth of the tech sector, the
flourishing arts and culture scene. It's a city that's constantly
reinventing itself while staying true to its roots.

Speaker 1 (13:36):
I think that's what makes it so fascinating to live here,
to witness this evolution firsthand. It's a city that never
stands still, always surprising us with.

Speaker 2 (13:44):
Something new, and yet despite all that change, there's a
sense of stability, a grounding that comes from that strong
sense of community and that deep connection to our shared history.

Speaker 1 (13:54):
It's like a river, you know, constantly flowing, always changing,
but always carving its path through the landscape, shaping the terrain,
but fundamentally remaining the same.

Speaker 2 (14:04):
I love that analogy. It speaks to the resilience and
adaptability of San Antonio, a city that's weathered many storms,
both literally and figuratively, and has come out stronger and
more vibrant each time it has.

Speaker 1 (14:16):
As we move into the last part of our deep dive,
I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on what you
see is the biggest opportunities and challenges facing San Antonio
in the years to come. Welcome back to our deep
dive into all things San Antonio. We've explored so much already,
from upcoming events to community initiatives, and even touched on
how the city's identity is evolving. As we wrap up,
I'd love to get your perspective on what truly makes

(14:37):
San Antonio special and what you think the future holds
for our city.

Speaker 2 (14:42):
You know, I think one of the things that set
San Antonio apart is that it's the city of contrasts.
We have this incredible history, these deep rooted traditions, but
alongside that there's a thriving modern scene. Yeah, it's a
place where you can experience cutting edge technology and centuries
old architecture all within a short distance.

Speaker 1 (15:00):
I like that that blend of old and new, traditional
and innovative. It definitely gives San Antonio its unique character.
We've seen that in everything from the Rodeo theme pop
up bar, to the donation of Lorne Michaels's archive.

Speaker 2 (15:15):
To ut Exactly. It's a city that embraces its past
while looking ahead to the future. And I think that's
mirrored in the people who live here. Yeah, a strong
sense of pride in our heritage, but also this willingness
to adapt and be open to new ideas.

Speaker 1 (15:28):
You're right, and speaking of embracing new ideas, we talked
about the rapid pace of change in San Antonio. What
do you see as the biggest opportunities and challenges that
come with that growth.

Speaker 2 (15:36):
Well, I think one of the biggest opportunities is a
chance to build a truly inclusive and equitable city. As
San Antonio grows, we need to make sure that everyone
benefits from that growth, regardless of their background or their circumstances.

Speaker 1 (15:48):
Absolutely, it's about creating a city where everyone feels welcome, valued,
and empowered.

Speaker 2 (15:53):
To contribute, exactly, and that involves addressing some big issues
like affordable housing, access to education, and health care opportunities
for economic advancement. It's about building a city that works
for all of us, not just to select few.

Speaker 1 (16:07):
And what about the challenges. What are some potential hurdles
we should keep in mind as San Antonio keeps changing.

Speaker 2 (16:13):
I think one big challenge is managing that growth in
a sustainable way. We need to be conscious of our
environmental impact, protect our natural resources, and make sure that
development is done responsibly and thoughtfully.

Speaker 1 (16:25):
Right. It's about striking that balance between progress and preservation.

Speaker 2 (16:28):
You got it. And another challenge I see is how
to maintain that strong sense of community as the city
becomes more diverse and expands geographically. We need to find
ways to connect people from different backgrounds, to foster that
sense of belonging and make sure that everyone feels like
they have a stake in the future of San Antonio.

Speaker 1 (16:46):
That's so important. We've talked about how community is one
of San Antonio's greatest assets. As the city grows, we
need to be proactive about nurturing those connections and creating
spaces where people can come together.

Speaker 2 (16:58):
Definitely, and I think we already see so many great
examples of that happening. The community gardens, the neighborhood festivals,
the cultural events, the volunteer organizations. We can build on
those initiatives and create a culture of inclusivity and collaboration.

Speaker 1 (17:12):
So looking ahead, it seems like San Antonio is at
this really pivotal point. There's all this incredible energy and momentum,
but we also need to be mindful of how we
approach the challenges and the opportunities that come with growth.

Speaker 2 (17:25):
I agree, it's an exciting time to be in San Antonio,
a time of transformation and possibility, but it's also a
time to step back and reflect on our values, to
imagine the future we want to build, and to work
together to make that vision or reality.

Speaker 1 (17:37):
Well said, I think you really capture the spirit of
San Antonio. It's a city bursting with potential, a city
that's always evolving, but also deeply rooted in its values
and that strong sense of community.

Speaker 2 (17:48):
And at the end of the day, that's what makes
San Antonio so special. It's a city with heart, a
city with soul. It's truly one of a kind.

Speaker 1 (17:56):
It has been a pleasure taking this deep dive into
San Antonio with you. This week has been a whirlwind
from unexpected weather patterns to inspiring stories of community involvement
and student success.

Speaker 2 (18:06):
It just goes to show there's always something new to
discover here. San Antonio keeps you on your toes, keeps
you engaged, and always leaves you wanting more.

Speaker 1 (18:14):
So until next time, keep exploring, stay curious, and embrace
all that san Antonio has to offer,
