Speaker 1 (00:01):
This is the mads Own Mom Squad podcast, a production
of iHeartRadio. Hard working real mamas having real conversations. Now
sit back, relax, and get ready to talk mom life
with Christa and her squad.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
Well, I definitely know that this lady Boz that is
back in house with me has been changing the world,
doctor Chasmine.
Speaker 3 (00:21):
What have you been up to, a sweetheart?
Speaker 4 (00:23):
Oh, I have just been living my best life and
really trying to spend time with family and friends and
just have joy. Well.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
Well, and you bring a lot of joy, by the way.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
I love it. I love by the way you don't
put work into that, like you know what I mean,
even though like that doesn't amazing that you're a doctor,
but that is not like you know, like your your
focus is your family, Yeah, you know, which is so
important because you know a lot of times we talk
about that balancing being a career woman and you know
(00:54):
whatso so but yeah, I'm happy to hear that.
Speaker 4 (00:57):
Yeah, family is so important, just like is just so.
It just goes by so quickly and the kids grow
up so fast. Oh, yes, all the kids are getting
so big. I almost have an almost sixteen year old,
now fourteen year old seven year old and the baby
is one and a half.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
Really already?
Speaker 4 (01:16):
Yes, next month, he'll be wonder.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
Oh okay, I was gonna ask here, do you plan
on having more? Do we keep that a secret?
Speaker 4 (01:23):
Ready, we'll see, but I really do this time, think
like we're good. I have two boys, two girls. We
have ever since we were younger. Okay, I'll tell a secret,
ever since we started dating. So me and Mike started
dating when I was sixteen and we got married super young.
When I was nineteen. We said we wanted six kids.
We wanted to have four, and then we wanted to
(01:44):
do either foster care or adoption to keep a brother
and sister or sibling together. So now we have our
four and we're like, you know, really open to that,
and so we're trying to get into respite care or
something like that. So we're we're exploring.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
Oh okay, okay, we're still exploring.
Speaker 4 (02:02):
But I think i'm biologically it might be my knee
is starting to hurt. Yes, I'm getting it's hard to
chase around that little little baby. Yeah, but there's just
make me so happy. So I actually cut down my
hours at the hospital. Did you really so that I
can spend more time with the family and the kids,
and it's.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
Good for you, good for you.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
Well that that doesn't mean that even though now you've
cut some hours at the hospital, that you have not
gained more hours in your life, Because once again, doctor Chaz,
I think you've been busy writing, writing, writing, as you're
an amazing author and changing so many young ladies' lives
that I hear that's what you're up to right now.
Speaker 4 (02:45):
Yes, I still, even though I've been really busy with
work and family, I have a passion for book writing,
writing books myself that empower young people in particular, and
then also teaching other people how to write books. So
traditionally my main book series has been on girls' empowerment.
(03:07):
But I've been having a lot of people say, doctor Jazz,
we want a book for boys and girls that we
can use in schools and community centers, and we want
one for everyone related to the topic of mental health.
So my my most recent book that I just recently
released is focus on that.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
I'm so happy that you said that, you know, because
you know, I'm just like a huge advocate of making
sure people understand like h it is real and definitely
we need to be there for our kiddos.
Speaker 3 (03:37):
So let's get into that.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
What exactly is the top you know of the topic
and how did you come about writing the book.
Speaker 4 (03:46):
Yes, so this one is called Life is a Battle,
But We will Win. Seven interactive activities to help you
win in the boxing match of life. So basically it's
about when you feel like life has just knocked you down.
You're flat on your face because feeling overwhelmed, stressed out, burden, discouraged,
(04:09):
when it feels like you're just on the ground life
has knocked you down. Strategies to get back up, Strategies
to keep your fight and life is a battle, but
we will win. It's so special as well because it's
titled after my younger brother that passed away. His name
was Aaron Wayne Battle and so a battle was his
(04:33):
initial soul. Life is a battle, but we will win.
And in the book I talk about my personal story
of however, since I was five years old, I wanted
to be a medical doctor. But three months before I
was going to take the medical college admissions test when
I was in college, three months before I was going
to take the big test to even get in medical school,
(04:55):
my brother, age sixteen, just suddenly passed away and asleep,
and I I felt discouraged. I felt like I wanted
to give up. I gave up for a brief time
my dream of even becoming a doctor. But I was
able to keep fighting and push through and still reach
my goal. And I talk about that in the book.
And so that's a little bit about what it is
(05:16):
called and why I wrote it.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
I want to take this time along with everybody else listening,
how sad that we are for your loss and what
a huge impact, especially at that time of your life.
I mean, I want to ask you, how did you
find the will to continue and especially during such a
stressful time of you know, your education, And I mean,
(05:42):
what was it?
Speaker 4 (05:43):
God?
Speaker 2 (05:43):
For you?
Speaker 4 (05:44):
Who it was? It was a lot God, my family,
my support system, having a determination. And I actually created
something that I call the AWB Framework for Success. This
is in the book. This is what I talk about
in the book. It's my secret formula, the AWB Formula
(06:06):
for Success. And that really helps answer the why and
like how did I do it? So the A stands
for answer the call, and what that means is even
when you get knocked down, even when you feel like
your life has just blown up in your face. The
first thing is to answer the call on your life
(06:29):
and just make a decision. Am I going to keep
fighting and moving forward? Even if you don't know how?
You're going to keep moving forward? Even if you don't
know how you're going to make it. You just need
to answer the call and make a decision. Yes, I'm
going to get up and keep moving forward, even though
I don't see the future, don't know how, but yes
(06:50):
I know I have a purpose and a calling on
my life. Yes, I'm going to answer the call on
my life, and I'm just going to make the decision
to keep moving forward, versus the decision like I'm just
gonna stay on this ground and die and give up
on my dreams, give up on everything. So A stands
for answer the call. Just make a decision. Am I
(07:12):
gonna fight? Yes or no? That's the first thing.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
That range true to me, because that right there brings
me back to when I lost my previous radio job
where I worked at another radio company going on ten
years and learning that, oh my god, I just lost
my job because of budget cuts.
Speaker 3 (07:36):
That was my mind of frame. I came right home.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
I had to make that decision right there, I wasn't angry,
I wasn't sad. I had to have an action plan,
and that was to get my ass on the phone
and start networking my butt off because I had to
make that decision for myself, but especially for my daughter
to show her that you cannot give up and you
cannot fail. And that was that was a lot, a
(08:03):
lot for me to go through because you know, I
felt like my identity.
Speaker 3 (08:07):
I thought twenty five years of my career has gone.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
But I but I was not going to lay down, yes,
because I couldn't, right, you know what I mean, Jazz,
I couldn't.
Speaker 4 (08:16):
Couldn't you want to?
Speaker 3 (08:18):
You want to, yep, But I couldn't.
Speaker 4 (08:21):
And you didn't see exactly what job or opportunity now
are going to open up?
Speaker 2 (08:27):
I know. Two hours later, I get a message off
Facebook from the president of the company saying, Krista, I'd
love to chat with you.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
I was like, how did how do people even know?
Speaker 4 (08:38):
I got fired already? Right, but you at least just
made the decision I'm going to keep fighting even though
you didn't see your way clear. You just made that decision. Yeah,
So that's the a you have to answer the call
on your life and W stands for have a warrior mindset. Okay,
(08:58):
And so once you make the decision, I'm gonna keep going,
I'm gonna keep fighting. You need to have a warrior mindset.
Let me ask you a question when you go into
have you wait, let me back up. Have you ever
been in a fight, like in elementary or high school
or have you did? Have you ever been in fights? Yes? Okay,
oh yes, I believe me.
Speaker 3 (09:20):
I've been in I've been in the back alley and
something showed me.
Speaker 4 (09:25):
Back alleys. So when you when you when you're about
to go in these back alley fights, do you do
you go in like, man, I'm just gonna I might win,
i might lose, I don't care, but I'm just about
to get in this fight. Or do you go in
with the winning mindset like I'm about to beat this,
I'm about to win. Yes, you go into it wanting
to win, planning to absolutely.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
Believe me, When I saw my girlfriend being jumped by
another girl and having her head punched in.
Speaker 4 (09:52):
I was like, oh hell, now right, So I.
Speaker 3 (09:55):
Kicked my girls button and then I went in and.
Speaker 4 (09:58):
Started to save her exactly. So you have to have
a warrior mindset. Once you decide I'm gonna get up
and I'm gonna answer the call of my life, I
am going to keep moving forward, you need to shift
your mindset to like and I'm not just gonna keep
moving forward. I'm gonna move forward and I'm going to win.
I'm gonna be successful having that warrior mindset.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
Can I answer a quick question though? But at my
age now, yep, I do not like conflict?
Speaker 4 (10:25):
Oh right, right, right, So that's a I would say
it's inner. This is inner conversations with yourself, like having
that warrior mindset on the inside with your thoughts. A
lot of people can have self sabotaging thoughts, have thoughts
of fear of doubt. So this might this can represent
(10:46):
a warrior mindset inside of yourself. Okay, yeah, don't lapping
around everybody, Christa La, what did you say? You skip
me a line?
Speaker 2 (10:56):
Bob?
Speaker 4 (10:56):
Do you just set have a warrior mindset? No, not
other people, I mean inside of you. Listen.
Speaker 3 (11:02):
That was roller skating dance. That was like in seventh grade.
Speaker 4 (11:06):
Right, No, okay, that's what it stands for. This is
all a warrior mindset. Not go be a warrior, but
have a warrior mindset. The other thing that warriors do
or in war, even in the army, when people get
and this is medical too, when soldiers get injured or
(11:27):
let's say you step on a grenade and your leg
blows up or you get shot, you have a huge
adrenaline surge, where it is a way that your body
protects itself and gives you extraordinary energy and strength to
keep going on. So when you get injured or shot
or hurt, you have an adrenaline surge. And what does
(11:49):
that do. It opens up your pupils of your eyes
so you can see better, It sends there, there is
a rush of blood that flows to your muscles. You
have extraordinary bursts of like energy. So how does that
relate to so that you can save yourself and so
you can preserve yourself, how does that relate to us?
(12:13):
We need to use our pain as our fuel. Warriors
are able to use their pain as their fuel. So
instead of letting situations that happen to you in life,
because there's a lot of crap that happens to us
in life. Even for our listeners out there, there's a
lot of crap that happens to you. What are you
gonna do with it. Are you going to use it
as an excuse to just sit down and sink into
(12:35):
a depression, or are you going to say, you know what,
I'm going to use these emotions, this anger that I'm having,
these this pain that I'm feeling, and I'm gonna use
it as fuel to keep moving forward. And that is
what I mean by having a warrior mindset.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
I like that. I totally agree with you on that.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
It's interesting because I did see some a post on Facebook.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
It was a while back, and.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
Had said something to the fact or it was a
meme or something like that, I don't I don't want
to be tested again to see if I'm strong. You know,
it's always said, you know God, whatever your faith is,
you he will never ask you to do more, put
you through more than what you can handle. And that
was one of the comments. But again I had test
(13:22):
who I am today through all like past pain. Yeah,
but to be at this point in my life and
if I didn't.
Speaker 3 (13:32):
Have those things right, it wouldn't have made you.
Speaker 2 (13:35):
Yeah, Like someone asked me, do you get offended if
I if I asked you questions about your glass eye?
I said no, because that's who I am right. I
get offended when people are offended that I do and
don't want to see. Oh, don't take your eye out.
I'm like, well, why that's who I am? Do you
find me disgusting? Then, like, it's just those things. I
(13:56):
was just curious your thought on that. But yeah, I
totally agree though.
Speaker 4 (14:00):
Yeah with you. Yeah, just use your use the things.
If you would have never been through some of the
things you've been through in your life, you wouldn't be
who you are today. You wouldn't be the strong person
that you are. Also, muscles are developed through very very
small tears in the muscle. When you're like lifting and lifting,
we're doing things, there's very tiny, small tears in the muscle.
(14:22):
But then eventually your muscles get stronger. It's painful to
work out, it's hard, but that pain is building muscle
and making you stronger. So use your pain as your fuel.
Have a warrior mindset.
Speaker 3 (14:35):
I love it. I love it once again a w B.
Speaker 4 (14:39):
Yes, I love the formula and then the B and
one little other comment. You said something about take out
your eye. You can you I've never seen you do that. Yeah,
I would. Let we have to do that on the
sun you want to I know, I was like, christ,
I want to see.
Speaker 3 (14:59):
Oh yes, I can take it out.
Speaker 4 (15:01):
Okay. I never I mean I never thought to even
ask you. I never heard you talk about that. But yes,
let me see.
Speaker 2 (15:06):
And it's just only with like don soap, Like when
I take it out just to clean it, it's just
don soap and water.
Speaker 3 (15:12):
Okay, nothing fancy, Okay, Well I was nothing here.
Speaker 4 (15:15):
Well I was. I think that's to me, that's super cool.
Speaker 3 (15:18):
I see, thank you, I love.
Speaker 4 (15:19):
You, Okay. And then the BEE stands for believe. After
you've made the decision I am going to fight, after
you have that warrior mindset, like I'm not just gonna fight,
but I am going to win. Then the last thing
you need to do, that's when you tap into your faith.
That's when you have to believe that you are here
(15:41):
for a purpose. You have to believe that you are
gonna win. You have to believe that you are capable,
that you are confident that you are worthy of success,
worthy of a happy life, worthy of joy. Beyond this situation.
You have to believe that even if I don't see
it right now, I believe that something powerful in my
(16:02):
life is going to happen, because when you start to
believe things and you speak intentionally about your life, things
really do happen. It begins to when you start to
speak positive affirmations over your life, believe something is going
to happen, it really impacts things happening. For example, if
(16:23):
you are intentional about like hey, I want to get
on a new TV show or something like that, I do.
Speaker 3 (16:31):
Okay, I'm interesting, right.
Speaker 4 (16:33):
And so let's say you say that every day, it
goes into your subconscious and so when you're so I
know this is a lot, but it's so powerful when
you go through the day. Our brains have so much input.
There's like millions of messages that our brains get every
day through the news, the radio, when you're walking around.
(16:55):
There's so many signals our brains get and we have
to like kind of filter a lot of it out
and only retain the things that are very important to us. So,
for example, if you go in the grocery store and
they're playing some songs, or you hear an announcement three
days later, you're not gonna remember that because we process, like,
we process a lot of things and then we have
(17:16):
to dump itau our mind gets so inundated with so
many signals each day. But if you speak and say
I want a new TV I want a new job
at a TV station. I want a new job at
a TV station. When you you might be like at
a grocery store or something, and then you overhear someone
talking about like, oh, there's a new job opening for
(17:37):
a TV SAT. You might hear that because otherwise you
might not have heard it. But because you're speaking it
daily and you're very intentional about believing it, you're you're
like more aware of the things that are important to you. Also,
another example of this is because it's science, Like if you,
for example, like when you want if you just bought
(18:00):
a new car and it's a certain brand, do you
notice that, for like the next week, everywhere you go
you see that type of car. Everywhere you go, you
see that cary You've been seeing them same cars this
whole time. Because that's like the top of your mind.
It starts to bring to your awareness, like things around
(18:21):
you that you normally just tune out.
Speaker 2 (18:23):
That's so interesting, Yeah, because there's a very true station
rate there.
Speaker 4 (18:27):
Exactly when you're thinking about, like I'm about to buy
a you know, a red suburban. I'm looking it up.
I'm about to buy it. I'm thinking about it. Everywhere
you go you see a suburban, or if you're looking.
Speaker 3 (18:37):
For I'm like, damn, I looking car exactly.
Speaker 4 (18:42):
Or if you're like looking forward to go to a
vacation and you've been thinking about it, planning for it.
It's like, man, it seems like everywhere I go, I'm
seeing stuff related to travel planners or things like that.
Now I will say, there's like algorithms on your phone,
like if you search something, the algorithms, But I'm talking
about outsider digitally, just like when you're walking around the
(19:04):
people you talk to. Your brain is like it's it
makes you aware of the things that you speak daily,
positive affirmations, the intentions that you set. Anyway, it's so
fascinating the way that it subconscious works. But anyway, b
basically it stands for believe you have to speak the
(19:26):
speak powerful things into your life that I will win.
I am going to get that job.
Speaker 3 (19:30):
I am going to and I know this to be true.
Speaker 2 (19:32):
Doctor Jazz has done this for how long we've known
each other six years?
Speaker 4 (19:37):
Yeah, six or seven?
Speaker 3 (19:39):
This is what you do. Yeah, and you are damn successful.
Speaker 4 (19:43):
Speaking into existence, and you have to have faith and
just believe that there's something bigger, a bigger purpose for
your life. If you weren't meant to be here, you
wouldn't be here. I have to see in my career
as a medical doctor, over the years, I've seen a
lot of death and dying. Like if you woke up
this morning and you're breathing another breath, that means you
(20:06):
still have a purpose on this earth. You're here for
something and what is it? So that's what it is,
a answer the call w have a warrior mindset and b
believe that it's gonna work out and just keep moving
forward and it will. So that's what I talk about
in those.
Speaker 2 (20:21):
So good and I want to bring light to the
cover of the book because I know that means a
lot to you when it comes to your your amazing
brother that you lost.
Speaker 4 (20:32):
Yes, so he was a one of his many talents.
He was so talented. He could dance, he could play sports,
he was so handsome. He had all the young he.
Speaker 3 (20:41):
Was he's in the book.
Speaker 4 (20:43):
Yes, he had all the young ladies coming after him.
But he was also like a graphic artist. So he
drew this picture of a fist in the air, and
then he also drew a picture of this really fancy
his initials A W B. And so I have that
in a frame at my house. But what I did
is I was able to take that picture and give
(21:05):
it to my cover designer and they were able to
incorporate that AWB and the fist on the cover of
the book. And so AWB stands for the AWB Framework
for success. That was his initials, Aaron Wayne Battle and
then that fish just represents fight. And so that's on
the cover of the book. And so as I have
been speaking to different schools distributing this book, actually there's
(21:29):
been copies of this book distributed nationwide. I've been able
to do a lot of great things with it. And
I feel like he's there with me. His message and
his art is help speaking to people, and we're alongside
these other they're just letting people know, don't quit, keep fighting,
don't give up.
Speaker 3 (21:47):
You can make it unbelievable.
Speaker 2 (21:50):
And I know he's just looking down from heaven smile
not you always, doctor Jazz always. So let's transition into
you know, groups and organizations that are you know that
you're hoping to partner with that are relating to you know,
this particular book.
Speaker 4 (22:09):
Yes, I want to partner with this. This book is
geared toward I would say teens and young adults. Now
adults can get the book as well, but it's really
geared towards like tea. It's at a maybe eighth to
ninth grade reading level. And so I'm looking to partner
(22:29):
with schools across the country. I'm looking to partner with
nonprofit organizations, anybody dealing with young people or youth who
are facing struggles, who are facing mental health concerns, feeling overwhelmed,
feeling stressed out from things that are going on. I
have bulk. I sell the book in bulk for schools
(22:52):
and organizations. I've done that in the past. I come
in and I do like live interactive workshops and keynote
speeches that are really interactive and fun, just letting young
people to knowing to never give up. And I really really,
what I really want to do is be able to
(23:12):
connect with more therapy centers to be able to use
the book, and also getting in juvenile justice systems to speak,
do workshops and get the books in there so that
if you know, any connection.
Speaker 2 (23:26):
I'm going to introduce you to our very own you know, sure,
Calvin Barrett.
Speaker 3 (23:30):
Do you know Calvin Barrett?
Speaker 4 (23:31):
I don't know personally.
Speaker 2 (23:33):
No, say hello to a fabulous man. Chris as advocate
for reading the stigma mental health. Yeah, especially in our
in our jail systems.
Speaker 4 (23:42):
Yeah, that's what I want to do. That's really what
I would love. So that's kind of selling the book
in bulk for different schools. And again, this is for like,
this is not just for girls. A lot of people
know me for my book series called Beyond Beautiful that
talks about how young girls are shouldn't be judged by
(24:03):
their outside. There's so much pressure on social media about
your identity, your looks, your true beauty is on the inside.
That has turned into a whole book series, a movement,
a curriculum. But a lot of people were like, doctor Jazz,
don't forget about the young men too. We just want
a book for all young people focused on mental health
and resilience. And so that's why I wrote this one.
Speaker 2 (24:23):
So amazing, Oh Jazz, all right, so where do we
get this amazing book?
Speaker 4 (24:27):
Yeah? So it's on Amazon. So if you got that
good Amazon Prime, Oh yes, you can just look up
life is a battle, but we will win. And then
put in my name Doctor Jasmine is a PoTA, it'll
pop up. It's on Amazon. And then if you want
to connect with me personally, if you want me to
come speak, or people want me to want to talk
(24:48):
about like what a book book purchase would look like,
or get signed copies, then they can go to www.
Dot Doctor Jasminezapota dot com. Jasm easy, yeah at a
dot com. And then if there's people who are like
doctor Jazz we want to write our own books, you
can go to I'm ready to I'm ready to launch
(25:10):
dot com and I have a little free training.
Speaker 2 (25:13):
My hand is.
Speaker 3 (25:13):
I am ready, Jazz, I am ready.
Speaker 4 (25:17):
Okay, don't play with me, Christa, because don't tell me
you're going to write a book, because I will write
a book right here with you. Don't play with me.
But we got in this now, all right, So how
about this? Don't play with me? Okay?
Speaker 3 (25:28):
So can we can we get into it the next
time you're here?
Speaker 4 (25:31):
Are you ready because I will take you through writing
the whole entire book live right here on the spot.
Speaker 2 (25:36):
Yeah. Ever since you know we're on you know the
show inspiring us on how to write a book, and
that you just dropped a book in front of us
by me saying a couple of things. I was like,
