Speaker 1 (00:00):
Ninety four point nine the bill. Hello, it's anti Ward
Giving Tuesday today. I've got two of my favorite people
on the line with me, Jen and John Driscoll Hopkins
from Hop on a Cure. You also know Hop from
the Zach Brown Band. Hey, guys, how are you great?

Speaker 2 (00:17):
How are you?

Speaker 1 (00:18):
I'm so good. I'm so glad you're both here to
talk about Hop on a Cure on this Giving Tuesday.
This incredible organization you guys started when hop was diagnosed
with ALS. You have helped so many families and you
are continuing the mission to support research and help maybe
reverse and cure als. Jen, I'm gonna start with you

(00:40):
if you could just explain a little bit about Hop
on a Cure, how it came to be well.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
When John was diagnosed with ALS in December of twenty
twenty one, our lives were kind of turned upside down,
and once we settled into what that meant, John decided
it was kind of his responsibility to use his platform

(01:05):
with Zach Brown Band and his own personal stage presence
and make people aware of ALS. It's a disease that's
not really talked about much. We all did the ice
Bucket challenge, but I bet A lot of people don't
even really remember what they did it for, and it

(01:25):
was for ALS. So we decided to create a nonprofit
and our mission is to raise awareness as well as
critical funds for research for ALS.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
It is.

Speaker 3 (01:44):
It's considerably underfunded.

Speaker 4 (01:47):
There's so many.

Speaker 3 (01:47):
Trials for cancer and so many other difficult diseases, but
historically not a lot has happened with ALS. So we
are on the journey to accelerate that. We like to
say we're accelerating the progress. There's a lot more progress
being made, especially in the last five years. It's incredible

(02:11):
how much progress is being made, but it's still it's
still terminal, and it's more science is really needed so
we can figure this thing out.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
Well, you guys are headed in the right direction. You've
done so much and I think I read that you
that you've raised over three million dollars for ALS research
since she started hop on a cure. Is that right?

Speaker 4 (02:36):
Well, actually it's a little more than that.

Speaker 3 (02:38):
We will have by the end of the year, we
will have given away three million and grant and funding
different research projects, projects and trials. So yeah, we're incredibly
proud of you know, it's been just two and a
half years really that we've been doing this, and you know,

(03:00):
we've been surrounded by some amazing people that have walked
this journey with us. But you know, John and I
had no experience with running a nonprofit, a charitable organization,
and we certainly aren't doctors or researchers.

Speaker 4 (03:14):
But we have really.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
Dug dug in and you know, done what we can.
And my husband, I'm so proud of him for putting
aside how difficult this is and being so strong for
his family and for other house out there people with ALS.

Speaker 4 (03:36):
I really think that he has given new light.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
To this disease and and anytime he meets people in
this community, they just light up so and feel not alone.

Speaker 1 (03:50):
And it is amazing all of the good that you've
done so far. So hop buddy, I have. I saw
you with the Zach Brown Band three different times this year,
and you were amazing.

Speaker 5 (04:04):
You've been business.

Speaker 1 (04:06):
I went to Charlotte, Atlanta, and I was in Nashville,
an amazing show, and I gotta be honest with you.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
Had I not.

Speaker 1 (04:16):
Known that you were dealing with ALS, there was no
way anybody out in the audience could tell.

Speaker 5 (04:24):
Well, sometimes I'm a little self conscious that people might
wonder what's wrong with me when I'm walking across the stage,
But in my position, I'm still pretty effective. I've had
to change the way that I played them songs, and

(04:49):
I can't sing every single part that I used to,
but I'm still singing it, and so I'm still bringing.

Speaker 1 (04:59):
It that You got to smile on your face too.
I know you're enjoying every minute of it.

Speaker 5 (05:06):
Yeah, I'm very grateful that, well, I have this incredibly
awful disease that it's so slow for me, and I'm
getting to enjoy lots of things that lots of other
people where they or just don't get the time to enjoy.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
Right.

Speaker 1 (05:29):
Well, I know that through what you've been through. We've
got a new song from you, called each Other, which
is a tribute to the togetherness and all of the folks.
You want to tell me a little about the song.

Speaker 5 (05:46):
It's a great time for this song because not only
is the video reminiscent of family dinners like Thanksgiving and
Christmas and all that, but it's also a time in
our country's history where we really need to embrace each

(06:11):
other and love each other and stop the division that
is plaguing us. So I'm hoping that people hear this
and have a moment to reflect on the person at

(06:32):
the grocery store that's pissing them off, or the guy
that cutting them off of the gas pomp, or you
know something in our daily stressful lives where we can
take a step back and say we need each other.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
We do.

Speaker 1 (06:51):
I love it. I love it so much. I cannot
wait to play it. And we have Giving Tuesday coming up,
which is an excellent opportunity for your fans and folks
to give to Hop on a Cure. Jim, could you
tell me a little about why folks need to Hop
on the Cure and donate on Giving Tuesday.

Speaker 4 (07:12):
Sure, This Giving Tuesday, We're actually if you make a donation,
we're keeping track of who makes a donation, and we
are going to have a sweepstake and give four tickets.
