(00:00):
Its power one on five point threeThe Oh Show. My Name is otis
new artist lay Banks riding up inthe studio. How are you welcome to
the A yeah, I'm so good. Thank you for having me here,
affiliate native. How often you gotdown here to the southern part of the
I mean I used to live inAtlanta when I was a kid. Okay,
so you know I been here alot. You say that, and
I was like listening to your music, just feeling your vibe on TikTok and
(00:22):
stuff, and I thought, man, she got a little Atlanta in her,
you know what I mean? Youfelt like you fit down this way.
You know what I'm saying, Atlantawill love you. Lay Bank's big
hit song tell your Girlfriend Now.TikTok is kind of where you got the
jump off the pa. How didyou know? And I love talking to
people in your realm because TikTok haschanged the music game in so many ways.
(00:46):
But when did you know? Likewhat was the moment? All of
a sudden, You're like, holdon, I'm not just putting TikTok videos
up anymore. This might be athing. Honestly, from the rip,
it was always intentional. I doeverything with intention. So I got on
TikTok during quarantine when there was nothingto do, and I told everybody,
Yo, I'm going to be TikTokfamous, and all my friends laughed at
me, but I was dead seriousand I really locked in on it.
(01:08):
And I spent time dedicating, madelike at least ten videos a day,
and I just start going super viral, super viral, like just with constant
videos. And then eventually I startedincorporating my music and all my videos and
it just picked off from there. That's amazing. And how did it feel
from when you went from just startingto put videos up there to all of
(01:30):
a sudden, it's just explosive famethat you have. Now it's putting you
on different stages. Now. Haveyou had that surreal moment where you're like,
woo, I kind of made it. Nah, I feel like I'm
still chasing, you know, Okay, You're always gonna be chasing. I
don't think the chase should ever bedone. But I think the minute that
I sit down and I'd be like, hey, I made it is like
(01:55):
the second that I lose my humility, in the second that I just stop
being humble for each girl, Ifeel like, I just it's not about
making it for me. You know, music is bigger to me. You
know, this is this is mylivelihood. This is like what I love
to do solutely. You know.I think it'd be corny if I just
wake up one day and be like, damn, I made it. As
(02:15):
any of the stages you've been onso far just been a bit surreal when
you most definitely when you just seethe crowd out there, like wow,
yes loud was like what Yeah,I couldn't believe it, Like rolling Liud
was crazy. I just did myfirst show well technically that was my third
show in LA, because yeah,so I just did my third show in
LA. But it was a differentcrowd and it was like so good.
(02:38):
I didn't expect it and I waslike, I was just I felt so
good. It was so surreal justhaving my people out there, being willing
enough, well being having the meansto bring people out and yeah, it
was it was amazing. I metLot, Oh she's so dope and it
was lit. Yeah, the songhas connected to people. Tell your girlfriend
now connecting to people. And whenyou hear audiences singing that back to you,
(03:00):
you just take a deep breath. And like most definitely like when at
that LA show, the most recentone, even at Roule in Loud,
just hearing people sing the song wasjust like what, like I watched this,
you know, how like you watcha baby grow up. Like I
made this song, I worked onit, I took my time on it,
(03:20):
and just to watch it just developinto something bigger than I don't know.
It's just crazy to me keep thatfeeling. And I know you will
because what you just said. Butyou're going to get to the status where
you always dream to be in,which is like massive superstar artists. But
I think taking in those moments stilland never taking it for granted where you're
like, yeah, I feel likeI'm still learning how to, like,
(03:45):
you know, take everything in.I feel like I just be go go,
go, go go move. It'seasy to let it pass by because
you're doing that. Yeah, butyou know, when you're living in it
also, like me and my managertalk about this all the time. When
you're living in it, it's soeasy to really like forget or realize like
you're in the middle of the lifethat you used to pray for, right.
You know, it's crazy because tenyear old leg Banks when you wrote
your first song, yeah, probablydidn't dream of I mean you dreamed of
(04:10):
it, but yeah, but Ididn't know if you'd even get right here.
Definitely so and this is just thestart most definitely amazing. What was
the what was the first song youever wrote? Called you remember? Was
it about somebody was like a boythat you liked or nah? I think
the first song that I wrote wasjust about me. Like it was just
like I was such this cool, quirky kid, Like I was into like
(04:33):
skateboarding and stuff. So I justwas like, I think the first song
I wrote, I was taking poetryclasses. My mom had me in a
lot of poetry classes. It wasprobably just about me and just just cool,
cute. The first song I droppedthough, was called Passion. Okay,
yeah, and do you ever gorevisit any of the like old notebooks
or anything. Of course, Ilove it. I love it. So
(04:56):
the new album you just dropped inMarch, right, so, uh,
what on that is? Like?Your your passion song, the one that
kind of it hits closer to homethan some of the other projects. Does
it tell your girlfriend? Is itabout trying to pick up a dude that's
got a girlfriend? Honestly, Ilove tell your girlfriend. I love to
your girlfriend. That's definitely. Ithas a special place in my heart.
(05:18):
And tell your Girlfriend has opened somany doors for me. It's going to
continue to grow. It still tobeginning for the record. But my passion
song that on that project has tobe seven day, seven days, seven
day, seven nights, okay,And it's more like more intimate, personal
and vulnerable. I feel like Isung my behind off first of all on
that record, and then just thefeeling it was so like love or girl,
(05:42):
and I was just in a differentkind of space. So I just
really expressed myself differently on that recordand that I love it. It's called
after seven of the album. Idefinitely want to check that song out.
Yeah, please do. When yousaid seven days, seven nights, yeah,
I don't know if you know whoCraig David is, but that song
jumped into my head Monday, tookher forward drink. On Tuesday, we
were making vocal and on Thursday andFriday and Saturday, you know, yeah,
(06:06):
that's all right, you got thevocals soon. That was my thing
for the longest. Uh. Nowyou've been you said you've been in Atlanta
for a few days now, Yeah, what if you stopped by what's like
some Atlanta feels vibes that you've gotteninto. I mean, well, my
birthday was on Tuesday, thank you, So me and my friends had a
(06:30):
common little pool party at the house. I like, I'm more of like
an intimate person. I care aboutthe people that's closest to me. That's
good, keep that too, Yeah, of course. So we we just
chilled in the crib and just spenttime with each other, spent time with
my manager, and yeah, Ijust like chilled for real. And then
like as far as working, wedid a couple of interviews. I did
(06:51):
on the Block, the performance fromthe Block performance that was fired. I
always do those and I love them. I think it's a really good way
to connect with the culture. Absolute. So yeah, that's it's been like
a you know, cute little bouncearound. We also did the what was
that that I did yesterday? Itwas that. Yeah, it was so
(07:14):
fired though it was it was DJ'slike I think from like all across like
it was it was fired. Itwas fire like all across the country,
Like it was super fire. AndI feel like I met so many people.
I think a lot of people don'trealize how much goes into music,
and a lot of people don't realizehow important DJs are. Yeah, because
yeah, without DJs, like who'sgonna put music on? Yeah, who's
(07:39):
gonna start that? Who's gonna pushthe place? So like, just seeing
the people who are who sit behindthese radio stations and who like are responsible
for the stuff that we hear everyday is like, dang, that's powerful.
Like I just sat in front ofthese people and I showed them who
I was. Absolutely it was.It was a vibe though, Well I
love that Atlanta's always the vibe,so you'll feel it every time you hear.
I love that you bring it back, the vie on Dutch. I
(08:00):
mean that was that was a vibefor the longest time, So keep bringing
that back. I like that. You've got a deal with under Armour too.
I love on Armo. I lovear very good. The trajectory is
on fire. So let's say you'retalking to lay five years, ten years
from now, when you've reached theheights that you've you've thought about hitting,
and you're still reaching for more. What do you want your legacy? What
(08:24):
do you want that person to be? Like? What is that thought for
you. In ten years, whatdo you see out of lay Banks?
In ten years, I see myselfbeing more successful than I could ever imagine.
In ten years, I see thatI'm in a place where I could
take care of everybody I care about. In ten years, I feel like,
(08:48):
Okay, I think this is thisis in my opinion. Someone said
this to me. They asked mewhat success Yeah, and I was like,
success is money and successes when youdon't have, like you could just
do this and do this. Buthe actually told me. Bertie told me
success is fresh air. And Iwant to be able to breathe, Like
(09:11):
I just want to be able tojust like I can do this, be
here, be there, do thisfor this person and still remain humble and
still remain who I was when Ifirst started. I think that's the most
important thing to me. No matterwhat. The money won't change me or
you know, I just don't.I don't want to become somebody that I
didn't start start off as if thatmakes sense. And the game can change
(09:33):
you, like you're going to bein that rat race for quite a while
for sure. And I like thatyou said breathe because there's going to be
a moment when you can tell him, you can tell the team, yeah,
I'm taking a break man, YeahI want, I want. I
need some fresh air like this, and you'll have the money. That's when
success is like I think success isfresh air. So I love that answer.
That might be my favorite answer i'vegotten. Lay Banks appreciate you tell
(09:56):
your girlfriend is going to explode. We're happy to be playing it. Thank
you so much for God bless youfor your music. Keep doing what you're
doing. We love it. Thankyou so much. Cool
