In 1987, scleroderma patient Sharon Monsky founded the Scleroderma Research Foundation with the belief that funding medical research was the best way to give hope to those living with this devastating disease. Sadly, since then, Sharon and many have passed away from Scleroderma but the fight for a cure continues thanks to folks like award winning chef, restaurateur, cookbook author, and radio and TV personality and just an all-around AWESOME PERSON...Susan Feniger! Susan was a close friend of Sharon’s in college and is a founding member of the Scleroderma Research Foundation Board of Directors...Susan is also behind their BIGGEST fundraiser, the annual, star-studded Cool Comedy, Hot Cuisine Oct. 29th...in Century City.

Aired October 27, 2024: In this podcast, Lisa Foxx and Susan talk all about this awful disease and what we can do to help those suffering from it. Scleroderma is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes the skin to thicken and harden. The name comes from the Greek words for "hard skin".  Scleroderma can affect the skin, blood vessels, muscles, bones, and other internal organs. Scleroderma affects around 250 out of every 1 million people in the U.S.  Women are four times more likely to develop scleroderma than men.  It can affect people of any age, but systemic scleroderma is most commonly diagnosed in people between ages 20 and 50.

IT WILL ALWAYS BE IN THE SPIRIT OF SHARON AND OUR BELOVED FRIEND COMEDIAN BOB SAGET WHO LOST HIS SISTER TO THIS...

Cool Comedy, Hot Cuisine...an annual event featuring some of the world’s greatest comedians, musicians, and performers. With proceeds go directly towards the Scleroderma Research Foundation mission, supporting our cutting-edge research program & educational outreach.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hi is Lisa Fox, and this is the iHeart Sokel Show.
All right, So there's a very special star setate event
happening Tuesday, October twenty ninth in Century City, Cool Comedy,
Hot Cuisine. We're talking big name comedians, big name performers,
and big name chefs all coming together to raise crucial
funds to find a cure for scleuraderma. It's all in

(00:21):
honor of the founder of the Sclero Durmer Research Foundation,
Sharon Monsky, and other folks who have had it, like
beloved comedian Bob Sackett's sister and so many who have
passed away from this devastating, crippling.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
Disease over the years.

Speaker 1 (00:34):
These folks are on a mission to make sure the
future looks much brighter for folks who come down with
this very rare disease. And thankfully, one of those people,
the crusader crusading on that behalf, is award winning chef,
restaurant tour, cookbook author, radio and TV personality just all
around awesome person, Susan Feniger.

Speaker 3 (00:53):
Hi, Susan, he Hi, Thank you so much.

Speaker 1 (00:57):
Susan was a close friend of Sharon's in college and
is also a founding member of the score Drom Research
Foundation Board of Directors. And this is so near and
dear to your heart for many reasons, but wow, you've
been at this on the board fortune.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
I had to find a cure for this thing since
the eighties.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
Yeah, I mean it's you know, I think my commitment
to Sharon was that I continue to do cool comedy,
hot cusine so we find a cure. So Sharon's one
goal was research and funding research, and that is something
that the sclarederm Or Research Foundation has stayed focused on.
And so when we have done you know, this amazing

(01:37):
event now for so many years, that money, some huge percent,
like ninety four percent or something like that goes towards research,
and we have amazing scientists that are trying to find
a cure and collaborating in a very progressive way, which
Sharon was I think the leader in that. He was

(01:57):
adamant that we do research and share information. And so
I'm continuing to support this and this year we have
an incredible event happening.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
Well, every year you do this event, it's always huge
names because it's really your friends.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
So it's the star power, you know, between the people
that you know Susan and the late Bob Saggot, our friend,
our beloved Bob Saggot. You know, it's like all your
big name friends are like, whatever you need, will be there.
What can we do because this means so much to you?

Speaker 2 (02:26):
Will be there.

Speaker 1 (02:27):
I'll sing, I'll do comedy, I'll bet on a ton
of money to buy a big live auction package.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
Wherever you need, We're going to be there, and they
will this Tuesday.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
Yeah, you know, I mean, I know, I think you
know this, but maybe some of your listeners don't, which
is that you know. Bob did the event maybe thirty
twenty five, thirty years ago, just as a favor to
come on and do comedy, and then a year later
his sister was diagnosed with Clara dermat and then Crazy'say

(02:56):
a year later, so Bob joined the board. And obviously
so many of Bob's friends have willingly come on done comedy.
We've never had to pay for comedy. They've just been
so incredibly generous, and we've always have at least three
or four unbelievable comedians. It also turned out we have

(03:18):
musicians that have performed over the years. So it's just
an incredible event and then friends of mine that are
chefs willing to do dinners in people's homes and donate
their time and amazing expertise, and those auction off for
a lot of money. So it's just it is a
way to be able to give back, I think for comedians,

(03:41):
for their friend Bob, for me and my friends who
are willing to help and support to raise money for
this horrific disease.

Speaker 1 (03:49):
Well, and because chloroderma, which is a chronic autoimmune disease
that causes the skin to thicken and harden. It's so
terrible what it does to a person and their body.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
But it's also very rare.

Speaker 1 (04:02):
I mean, what are the odds that your friend Sharon,
your college pal, and and then Bob's sister would get
this thing as it only affects about two hundred and
fifty people, two hundred and fifty people out of every
one million.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
I mean, it's so rare, it.

Speaker 3 (04:15):
Is it is. We always sort of thought this is
just so strange, but stuff happened. So of course Bob
was an amazing partner in this and sorely miss for sure.
And you know, you can see by the generosity of
his friends quality of comedy that his friends provide. I mean,
and this year, of course, we're so excited because we've

(04:36):
got such an unbelievable lineup happening.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
SRF Cure dot org for all the info. By the way,
cool Comedy hawkusine this Tuesday. But come on, Jeff Ross
and John Mayer were two of you. Roastmaster Jeff Ross
hilarious and John Mayer Grammy winning John Mayer two of
Bob's very close friends. And I feel like they have
pledged to be at this event, be a huge part
of this event for forever and Bob's honor and in

(05:03):
honor of finding a cure and all the other folks
who are going to be there on Tuesday to help
get this money raised. And I see this time John
Mayer is going to perform and be honored.

Speaker 3 (05:12):
Yes, John and Jeff are being given the This is
the second annual Bob Legacy Award, and Jeff and John
are both being honored. Great. Yes, Then in addition will
be MC and John Mayer will be performing so great.
And then the other comedians are just great names and
really hysterical. So you've got Alex Settlements with the comings,

(05:36):
Jeff Jeffries, Chris Hardwick, an amazing lineup, and we're doing
all the food from our newest restaurant, alic B in
Palm Springs. So we're excited about us.

Speaker 1 (05:47):
Oh yeah, I've seen you post all lover social media,
like that's the only way I can keep up with
all your restaurants. So as following Susan Vinegar on Instagram,
you can keep up with so many restaurants that you
and your partner Mary C. Milliken, you have, I mean
from older favorites like Border Grill. Come on, Border Grill.
I love when you had your Street restaurant and Mudhead Tavern.

(06:08):
Now you've got the super popular Mexican spot Socolo right
there in Santa Monica, a new spot in pom Springs.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
We're going to talk about Vegas.

Speaker 3 (06:17):
The beginning of the season. We opened Alice B and
it is incredible Mediterranean with us obviously Southern cal influence,
but Mediterranean food. It's part of a complex, a high
end apartment complex. It's called Living Out. It's a great
LGBTQ community that is part of that Living Out complex.

(06:41):
And then Alice B is a separate restaurant, but on
those same grounds. It's just a few blocks off the
main Drag and you know, I love the food we're
serving there. It's been very exciting to be out there.
We are crazy busy last year and I think we're
just seeing the season start up again this year. And
I was looking at our new menu for the Funk.

(07:02):
It is very classic, classic Mediterranean dishes. I mean there
is for example, at the menu that we're doing for
cool comedy. We're doing a etemam pummus with seeded crackers.
We're doing a flax seed testame seed crusted chicken cutlet
with a dil aoli and a frize and apple salad

(07:23):
with a Harisia vinaigrette. We're doing a roasted cauliflower dish
with a Tahemi sauce underneath it. We're doing a short
rib croquette. We're doing a butterscotch a butterscotch pudding with
a hazel nuts, caramels sandy. It's just you know, I
think on the menu are things like a carpaccio that's

(07:44):
really delicious, a steak diane, a pork shoulder that's been
raised for like twelve hours. So it's just some really interesting,
you know, a really delicious crudeo. So there's a great
there's just a great mix of thumb very traditional dishes,
somee that have you know, our sort ofpin on it.

(08:05):
And we have this unbelievable wineless, a very interesting wineless.
What else do I think? We have a bar menu
where we do, for example, the bar menu that opens
at four in the afternoons, and there's things that are
like a delicious smash burger with homemade dill pickles and
homemade English muffins, or the bonn on it. We have

(08:27):
a grilled tea sandwich which is with a pimento cheese
and a pepper jelly on homemade brio. So the menus
are really great. We have jazz on Saturday nights. Just
it's great. I love the whole vibe of it. And
then we have our first drive through that we opened
in Vegas for barbecue mexicanas.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
Oh yeah, that's the.

Speaker 1 (08:49):
One I saw too, Like, wait, we got to hit
up that place next time we're all out in Vegas.

Speaker 3 (08:53):
Yeah, yeah, it's great. It's our barbecue Mexicana that we
have at all you know, the Raiders and Femobile Stadium
and again grills at Mandalay Bay across from border grills.
I feel like we're.

Speaker 1 (09:04):
Busy a little bit, a little bit well, and I
just loved Susan, the way that you talk about food
and even just describing what's going to be on the
menu at the big event. We'd love you to join
us and buy a ticket to be there. Cool Comedy
Hawk Cuisine at the Fairmont, the all new Fairmont Century
Plaza and Century City, Right, they just redid that hotel.

Speaker 3 (09:20):
Gorgeous, Yeah, really gorgeous, and it's I've been there tasted,
We've been done to tasting of the whole menu and
it's really delicious. And the team there is fantastic in
the hotel, I think is such easy access, so we're
excited to do it. That's the first time we've done school.
Comedy Hawk Cuisine there.

Speaker 2 (09:38):
Gonna be great.

Speaker 1 (09:39):
And then but the way that you describe the food
and what people are going to taste on the menu
when they buy a ticket for this fundraiser, I mean,
I just feel like you still, after all these years
of doing food the way that you do food, you
still it's still like Christmas Morning for you, right, Like
you seem so excited the creativity what you can put
into it seems like it gets you so excited like
a little kid every time.

Speaker 3 (09:59):
I know, I'm excited for it. I love it. It's
a great menu. And I don't know, Lisa, have you
seen that? Did you see Susan Feniger fork the documentary?

Speaker 1 (10:09):
No, you have a documentary that's very cool. Where's that plane?
How can we see it?

Speaker 3 (10:14):
Well? Not yet, but we're just in San Diego at
the International Film San Diego International Film Festival, bold out
audiences at for theaters. It's called Susan Fendeger fork. Liz Lachman,
my wife, directed it and shot it, and you can
see a clip on it if you go to her

(10:34):
website Liz Lachman dot com. But it's amazing. You got
to see it. I'm gonna have to send you a link, okay.

Speaker 2 (10:40):
Yeah, oh my gosh.

Speaker 1 (10:41):
We're gonna and I'm gonna google it too then but
we'll be able to see it hopefully soon when Netflix
or Apple TV or who or somebody snatches it up.

Speaker 2 (10:49):
Right, exactly, that's the plan.

Speaker 1 (10:52):
So it's called Susan Feneger and it's forked. You're saying
f O r K E D right forked? Yeah, exactly,
for it's your whole it's your whole story, then write
your whole kind of life story behind the scenes, how
you got to be in the award winning chef.

Speaker 2 (11:05):
That you are.

Speaker 3 (11:06):
It's sort of, yes, it's behind the scenes, but you know,
it sort of uses the construction of street as the
background of it, but it's more a story about Liz
would kill me if you heard me describe it this way.
She calls it a culinary disaster film, but it's sort
of It takes you to Vietnam and China and it

(11:28):
sort of shows you my relationship with Mary Sue and
that a bit, and it sort of goes back and forth,
but it uses that as a way to show that
what happens when someone at the top of their field
decides to go out and do something solo, and sort
of it's the journey of how one picks themselves up
and continues on. So it sort of crosses all fields

(11:49):
and business and what happens. But it's great. It's gotten
amazing reviews, so that's been exciting. People have been loving
how could it not.

Speaker 1 (11:58):
People love you and you mentioned traveling around the world,
and let's had a huge influence on your food and
what you serve at your restaurants, your influence of all
these different countries you've visited over the years.

Speaker 3 (12:08):
Yeah, I mean it's I feel like you learned so
much about people's culture from eating street food all around
you get to meet people. It's an equalizer because people,
you know, without money, with very little money, people with
lots of money love street food. So you end up
just meeting people. I think you really get just a
window into the culture when you're just on the street

(12:32):
and tasting people's food, and people love when you want
to experiment and explore their food through you know, something
very close to their hearts. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (12:41):
Absolutely, and we're hoping people will have a taste of
your food not just at your restaurants, but also at
this event, we were helping people buy a ticket or even
just make a donation because again people suffering with scloderma,
such a painful disease, and because it's taken so many
special people. And last year at this event cool Calm
Haw Cuisine, Eric, my honey and I we sat next

(13:03):
to young Gal probably in her early twenties, and she
has gloroderma and.

Speaker 2 (13:08):
She was just so lovely.

Speaker 1 (13:09):
I just loved chatting with her, such a sweet young woman.
And I could see her physical struggles and probably the
worry that she has about her future, how much time.

Speaker 2 (13:22):
She even has left living with this thing. It's so
harsh on the body.

Speaker 3 (13:27):
You know, basically, in the very simplest of terms, it
overproduces collages, so scar tissue in the body, and it
basically sort of turns one body to rock. And so
it's very painful, so that you can't you know, use
your joints becomes tight, it sets to suffocate the lungs,

(13:48):
the esophagus, it tightens up, and it's a very painful,
disfiguring disease. And because it's a woman's disease, and because
it's disfiguring, it's not a disease that is ever gotten
a lot of attention, and so it's just right. I mean,
the problem is is, you know, no matter what, whether

(14:08):
disease hits you know, millions of people or it hits
hundreds of thousands of people, it's still something that the
people are that are struggling with it need help. And
so we've been very focused on this. We believe and
the scientists that we have working with the Clare Derma
Research Foundation believe that this is a disease that's curable,

(14:30):
so we just have to keep plugging along with it.
And I'm you know, my goal is is to do
this find a cure so I can stop doing this
damned event. Huh.

Speaker 1 (14:40):
Well, we don't want to stop the event, but yeah,
I know, right, So we find a cure and then
maybe we'll still just do it so we can celebrate
that we did it, because this event is a really
good time and well worth a ticket price when folks
jump on the website and grab one and meet us
there this Tuesday.

Speaker 3 (14:56):
It's srfcure dot org is the Square Germer Research Foundation website,
and you can search cool comedy, hot cuisine. You can
find it. I think even if you just search cool comedy,
hot cuisine. SRF Cure dot org is the Square Germer
Research Foundation website. And you're right. If you can't go

(15:17):
to the event, a donation five dollars, one dollars, twenty
five dollars, whatever. It is is so important for helping
to find a cure for this horrible disease.

Speaker 1 (15:27):
And as horrible as it is, it is a really
lovely room with great energy and wonderful people who will
be there. If you buy a ticket, for Tuesday, October
twenty ninth, Cool Comedy, Hot Cuisine at the Fairmont Century
Plaza in Century City. You're gonna bump into John Mayer
in the hallway like I did last time when he's
just leaving the restroom.

Speaker 2 (15:44):

Speaker 1 (15:49):

Speaker 3 (16:06):

that'll be there. You know. Rosie o'donald is joining us.

our one of the chef packages, that is it dinner

(16:26):

have fun and it's that and wine and and those
kinds of packages that are that are really you know,
they're I think they're unique and they're one of the
kind packages.

Speaker 2 (16:43):
One of the kind indeed. Yeah and again.

Speaker 1 (16:45):
So they'll be honoring John Mayer and Jeff Frost this year,
and then Jeff will be hosting the Rosetmaster himself will
be hosting the whole event.

Speaker 2 (16:52):
John Mayer will perform.

Speaker 1 (16:53):
Then you're gonna have comedy from Whitney Cummings, Alex Edelman,
Chris Hardwick, Jeff Jeffries and more, and just great people
in the house. Cocktails Dinner, it's cocktail Attire. It's a
nice event and like I said, just great people coming
together to make a difference. And all the delicious food
that men you inspired by Susan Feniger's and Maryspud Millican

(17:13):

very special star set event and hope to find a
