Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hi, I missa Fox and this is the iHeart So
Cal Show.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
All right.
Speaker 1 (00:03):
It is a perfect way to spend next Sunday, May eighteenth,
outside on the strand in Manhattan Beach. Get those steps
in as you cycle to fight cancer at the thirteenth
annual Tour to Apeer. It's outdoor, stationary cycling that brings
together thousands every year, and folks just love this event.
Towardpeer dot com for all the info. Towurdipeer dot com
(00:24):
for all the info. But even better, let's hear more
about it straight from the gal who's behind this whole thing.
She's the co founder and producer of Tour to Peer
Lisa Manheim.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Hi, thanks for having me.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
Of course I'm clapping because the instructors at this event
get people so pumped up you're not gonna get I mean,
there are some maybe sad cancer moments for you know,
so many people personally affected by cancer, but this event
is so energizing, like let's do something about it. We're outside,
they're getting people pumped up, you got the music going,
so it's really like an invigorating way to fight cancer,
(00:57):
dare I say? And we people just love it every year.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
Thank you. Thank you. And you've been so it's so nice.
You've seen it firsthand.
Speaker 1 (01:04):
I know firsthand, so cool to see all those spin
bikes right they're on the beats and literally ten plus
thousand people come out for this thing every single year.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
Yeah, we have three hundred and some odd bikes. Each
bike has five riders. They ride at eight thirty, nine thirty,
ten thirty, eleven thirty, and twelve thirty. And then we
have a free health and fitness expo with all of
our wonderful sponsors and local sports teams and local businesses.
And that's all free for anybody who's down in Manhattan
(01:37):
Beach on the Strand on the beautiful sunny weekend day.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
And if you're worried that Lisa is suggesting, you're going
to spin all morning long by yourself. No, like you said,
one bike. It's essentially like intervals, so you're kind of
taking turns with the team, and whether you have your
own your own team, or you can kind of team
up with strangers new to be, you know, soon to
be best friends. If there's any spots available, you can
just join in with them some new people and be
(02:01):
part of our team.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
Exactly. You go to tourdipeer dot com and you click
on a register and register to ride and up on
a bike. That's what we're looking to get everybody down there.
I think if you experience it once, you really are
hooked thirteen years later. We're so lucky to have teams
(02:24):
that ride year and in, year out, and I think
it is because of what you were talking about the
energy that we create down there with all those bikes
riding in Unison. We have five instructors for each of
the hours. They're all passionate and unique, and they each
bring their own playlists, their own energy. They spend so
(02:45):
much time making this hour not just a spin class
or a ride, but inspirational and motivational and heartfelt and energizing.
And yes there are tiers for some throughout the day
in certain moments, but we also have crazy, crazy antics
like Bailey, the King's mascot riding on a spin bike
(03:06):
with Joe Ruin from UCLA. Football players are walking by
tossing footballs into the crowd, and we have celebrity riders
every year. It's always fun to see which local celebrities
are going to support the cause. And local bands, entertainment,
live music, we've had it all at tordi Peer.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
Yes, you do feel lucky. Yeah, it's a good time.
So wait, if you're still needed people in need of
writers at last check, you know, you'll find out when
you go to tordypaier dot com if there's still spots
for riders and still spots for teams to come and
spin bike next Sunday morning in Manhattan Beach to a
fight cancer. But how much does it cost to be
(03:48):
an official part of it?
Speaker 2 (03:49):
It's a fifty dollars registration fee and one hundred and
fifty dollars fundraising commitment, so each person is responsible for
one hundred and fifty dollars. But that's so easy to
raise because you just register, you share it on Facebook
and loom you've you've hit your fundraising goal. And then
some people are always surprised at how easy it can
be to fundraise. Yeah, each each person does that, and
(04:11):
that's going to help us raise our one point five
million dollars. You know, and now more than ever, cancer
research needs private funding. We're in a really scary predicament
in our country right now, and events like Toward to
Peer that help private you know, help enable private groups
like us to fund research across the country is critical
(04:34):
when there are cuts being made left and right in
cancer research.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
Let's talk about the three cancer organizations will be raising
money for next Sunday at Toward a Peer. Has it
been the same three organizations that you've the benefit from
this all thirteen years that you've done it.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
Yeah, since here two basically you're one. We are figuring
things out. But since here too, we've benefited. The Hirschburg
Foundation for Pancratic Cancer Research, which is the organzation that
I am the executive director of that was founded by
my mom twenty seven years ago to raise funds for
pancredic cancer research in honor of my stepdad and my
(05:12):
co founder, Eith founded the and is why I founded
the Uncle Corey Foundation for Brain Cancer Research. So they
are our partner. And third, we support the Cancer Support
Community of South Bay, which is an incredible organization that
provides free services to cancer patients and their families, serving
(05:33):
all of the South Bay all the way down to
San Diego. They're an incredible group.
Speaker 1 (05:37):
Yeah, they are especially wonderful. I had them on the
show one year. I had all of your charneys. I'm well,
of course when I have a you know, we put
a spotlight on Hirschberg Foundation for pank Credit Cancer Research.
We have you on because that's you know what, that's
your side job. No, that's your main You're amazing, Tourna Pears,
the quote unquote side job, as is the LA Cancer Challenge.
We'll have mentioned that in a moment too. But yeah,
(05:58):
So when I featured the Cancer Support Community on the
show a while back, boy, what a wonderful organization. You know,
as technology has allowed us to go online and get
free services. Folks can go on their website, the Cancer
Support Community South Bay, and they're just able to offer
so many whether it's information about people just diagnosed right
(06:20):
you're doing zoom calls. You can ask questions. You can
learn about the type of cancer you may have. You
can also do all kinds of you can do therapeutic
things like yoga. There's yoga classes for free on there.
There's sound bath, you could do a sound bath. So
many classes and support groups and just ways to connect
with people who are also going through what you're going through,
and it's all for free. They're wonderful exactly. And then
(06:41):
the Uncle Corey Foundation for Brain Cancer Research. That's sor
touch on that story because what a wonderful family. And
right they're out there in droves every year and support
of Uncle Corey.
Speaker 2 (06:52):
Yes exactly who died of who died of brain cancer
at year or two of toward a peer and they
have been funding research and see grants throughout the US
and are super dedicated and passionate. And on Twitter pair
they're all out there riding in their superhero cape. There
our largest there are largest team and they bring it
(07:16):
every year and are doing incredible work to fight brain cancer.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
Yeah, and again just the passion of the people coming out.
I think when Eric and I came my boyfriend I
believe was right after my we lost my aunt breast cancer.
But just the passion of people out there touched by cancer.
It's you really feel like we're out there doing something.
So like you said, in hopes, they're raising over a
million dollars. Everyone who spends, people who come by, and
(07:41):
you don't even want to get on a bike. If
you want to be lazy, be lazy, but I mean
we'll drive down there. That's not lazy. But just to
show support and maybe you can just pop on Twitterpeer
dot com and donate twenty bucks. You know, whatever anyone
can give, it all adds up. And again the energy
that Lisa's talking about that's out there. You know, we
were spectators that year and it's got the good taste
of all of it. And I think if at one
(08:01):
point you're like Lisa, you want to jump on the back,
I'm good, I'm good, I'm good. I'm all be over
here watching. But if you feel inspired, you can. You
can spin if they're still spots available, and you could
just show up and feel that energy. You can also
stop by the Free Health and Fitness Expo. What specifically
is going to be going on there for for families?
What are the offerings this year? Any fun are we
(08:22):
doing next?
Speaker 2 (08:23):
So?
Speaker 1 (08:23):
Yeah, what goes on for that part of it?
Speaker 2 (08:24):
So much good stuff Free Health, Health and Fitness Expo.
We've got. My favorite is the local sports teams that
come out and do great things, like the La Kings
that are setting up a huge uh hockey rink for
kids with all the bounces, and we've got the connect
to ice Cream truck. We have sketchers setting up a
pickleball court that anybody can jump in and play. The
(08:47):
Kila is going to be out there, there media partner there.
Their booth is so fun where you can pretend you're
on TV. Fresh Fresh Brothers Pizza, we have smoothies, we
have both strings and persin bars and all sorts of
good stuff we have. We're so lucky with this event
to have over ninety sponsors wo who support us year
(09:10):
after year and just and come back despite despite everything
that's going on in the world. They our sponsors love
this event, and we are so thankful for them that
they not just they don't just write a check. They come.
They have a team. There'll be a Sketcher's bike, Sketcher's
Team with ten bikes, Bay Club with like sixteen bikes.
All of our businesses, big and small, most of them
(09:33):
will have a boose in the expo and they're so
happy to be there giving away stuff. You know, again,
just staring in the tort peer energy of the day.
It's it's really it's really a spectacle. I think it's
it's hard to hard to describe until you're out there
literally staring at the Pacific, at the Pacific Ocean, looking
at all these bikes lined up in unison, people in
(09:55):
costume and you know, teen T shirts and of course,
like I said, mascots, we have a I'm excited about
an LA Chargers player who's going to be in attendance. Right, So,
if you've got any Chargers fans, they should definitely come
out at eight point thirty in the morning to see
who that's going to be.
Speaker 1 (10:15):
Wait, you can't say you can't give us a hint.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
I can't, I can't come on.
Speaker 1 (10:21):
Yeah, if you love the Chargers, love the Chargers, get
out there.
Speaker 2 (10:24):
Yeah. Last year we had Jim Harbough. That was a
huge he had just become the coach. That was a big, big,
big news. Yeah, the Chargers are very supportive. King's Laker
girls are going to be their rams are sending some cheerleaders,
UCLA football, USC basketball. I mean, the community really comes
together for this event, and I think that's one of
(10:46):
the things that makes it so special. We always have
the Manhattan Beach Fire Department, the Manhattan Beach Police Department,
the Lifeguards, the Manhattan Beech City Council. They are all
riding this year. We're also so yeah, so good. Sure,
We've got three bikes of Palisades residents who are impacted
by the fires who are now living in Manhattan beach,
(11:07):
and we've gotten three bike sponsored for them, so we
got that's going to be the Pali Strong bikes. They're
going to be riding right alongside the Fire Department bike.
So I'm most looking forward to seeing those people out
there able to you know, enjoy, enjoy the energy that
toward a pair brings. Yeah, everyone there, we're hoping for
(11:28):
our flyover, which always happens during the eleven thirty hour
weather permitting. That is a full goosebumps moment for anybody
who's ever witnessed the Tiger Squadron flyover. It's it's really special.
Speaker 1 (11:43):
That's eleven thirty weather permitting that day.
Speaker 2 (11:46):
Yeah, yeah, it's always during the sunshine.
Speaker 1 (11:48):
Pray for sunshine next Sunday, Yeah yeah. And then, like
Lisa said, really just to visualize a spectacle toward a
peer next Sunday, over three hundred plus spin bikes on
the strand facing the water, and makes you think, oh gosh,
who had to drag all these out there? Those suckers
are heavy and who has to put them back now?
But just to see all these for real heavy spin
(12:11):
bikes on the strand and then literally thousands of people
just out there supporting watching the action, watching the instructors
bring the energy with the music, and watching people spin
and do their thing and just feel so good about,
you know what we're all accomplishing out there together, and
it's having a huge impact on these three specific cancer
organizations Hirschberg Foundation for pank Credit Cancer Research, the Cancer
(12:32):
Support Community, and Uncle Corey Foundation for Brain Cancer Research.
It's just gonna make it all feel even better. In
addition to all the free fund goodies happening as part
of the free health and fitness expo for you know,
fun for all the families and whatever you can give
to add to the overall donation total tour topeer dot com,
all the info at tour to peer dot com and
(12:53):
how we know when? Do we know when the bikes
are sold out? Or should we just we're gonna come anyways, right,
so it doesn't really matter, yeah, exactly.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
You can check the website and there's also great videos
on our website that will give you a visual of
what the day looks like. And we have incredible stories
of our of our hero writers to share on a
website too. So I encourage everybody to check out toward
topeer dot com and see what it's all about.
Speaker 1 (13:18):
So that's the biggie for next Sunday Tour to Peer,
the thirteenth ye old Tour to Peer right there in
Manhattan Beach. And then quickly to mention of your other
big event, the LA Cancer Challenge that you've been doing forever,
also every year, but this one at UCLA, and that
one will be coming up later on in the year.
When is that one again?
Speaker 2 (13:34):
It is in October this year. It's going to be Sunday,
October twenty sixth, our twenty eighth LA Cancer Challenge five
K registration will open up this summer. You can go
to pancreatic dot org to sign up for our newsletter
and learn more. And that is a just again a
super fun festive again long standing twenty eight years of
(13:57):
people coming out walking on that gorgeous you see campus
to raise money for pancred at cancer Research.
Speaker 1 (14:03):
Yeah, I was gonna say, I should remember the time
of year because usually people come dressed in Halloween costumes
for the LA Cancer Challenge. So yeah, it's another good time.
See I like see how you make see how Lisa
Manheim makes fighting cancer kind of fun? Dare I say
kind of fun? So it's gonna be a that's gonna
be another great one, so we'll have to have you
back on for that as always, so again, get signed up,
find out more, come out, cheer people on, be a
(14:25):
part of it, donate, do whatever you can. Next Sunday
Thirteenthdaniel Tour to Peer in Manhattan Beach. All the info
at tourdpeer dot com, tour topeer dot com. Yy Lisa,
thank you, thank you,
