Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back to another episode of Carolina Cares Dare I
say this is actually I know, this is a fact.
The most people we have had in this studio ever
two four six. There is seven of us in here today.
But it's gonna be fun. There's gonna be some friendly
trash talk because it is time for Battle of the
Badges with the high Point Fire Department and the high

(00:23):
Point Police Department, or should I say high Point Police
Department and then high Point Fire Department.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
Okay, please welcome on. We got a list of people.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
First of all, Emily Cook, you are the high Point
Police Department Community Outreach Coordinator. Yes, hello, Hi, We're glad
you're here. We also have from the high Point Police Department,
Captain Bonnie Andrews, Hi, Hi, Yeah, there you are.

Speaker 2 (00:45):
Hello.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
And then from the high Point Fire Department we have
Captain Perry Hall, good morning, We're glad you're here. And
Captain Owen Farmer, good morning. Lots of personalities, lots of fun.
So Emily tell us simply, why are you here today?

Speaker 2 (00:59):
We are here to.

Speaker 3 (00:59):
Talk about the annual Battle of the Badge's charity softball
game that is coming up this September. It's on September seventh,
and essentially our fire department and police department here in
High Point put together softball teams and they compete for
some charities and it's just a fun, fun day.

Speaker 1 (01:18):
I do have a question to ask before we get
this even going, and I'm gonna put it over to you,
Captain Andrews. Why is the police department better than the
fire department.

Speaker 4 (01:27):
I want to say we're better because we're awake at
all hours, we don't get nap times, we don't have
comfort recliners. So I feel like we're going to be
a little more athletic.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
Okay, I love it. The rebuttal from the fire department.

Speaker 5 (01:41):
People like us.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
You save cats from trees, right.

Speaker 5 (01:45):
Actually that's kind of funny. When you put a ladder up,
the cat goes higher. But we have gotten the amount
of storm.

Speaker 1 (01:50):
Drains personal experience. I'm feeling a lot just you guys
are so much fun. I'm so glad you're here today.
So this is obviously is for charities, and we're very
excited for that, Harry, what charity is the fire department
playing for?

Speaker 4 (02:02):
So?

Speaker 6 (02:03):
The North Carolina Falling Firefighters Foundation is a group here
at a nonprofit organization in the state.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
And what does that organization do?

Speaker 6 (02:11):
They honor the falling firefighters all the way back from
the beginning in North Carolina. There's about three hundred and
fifty onorees right now that they have and add about
ten every year.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
Oh wow, And Captain Andrews. What charity is the high
Point Police Department playing for this year?

Speaker 4 (02:28):
We are battling this softball game to raise money for
Angels in Blue.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
Tell us more about Angels and Blue.

Speaker 4 (02:36):
Angels in Blue is a Christmas event where we help
families in need inside the city of high Point. The
families that are nominated, we don't take any self referrals.
These are families that are nominated by officers that engage
victims on the street or see come in contact with
people in need, as well as some of our community partners.

(02:58):
And those people don't know they're nominated until we call
them in to do an assessment of their needs, and
they will find out that they were nominated and we
will provide Christmas gifts and basic essentials for those families
and show them some love and hopefully take some burden
financial burdens off of them at Christmas.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
Oh I love that and Emily, tell us a little
bit about this game. How did it get started? We're
on the fifth annual, so just a few years ago
it seems so.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
Yeah, so we are on the fifth annual. This year
we played four, we're tied to and two with the
fire Department, so this year will be the tie breaking year.
It started as a fundraiser for Angels in Blue and
the Fallen Fier Fighters Foundation.

Speaker 2 (03:41):
Awesome, No, we love that. Do you have some you
want to add?

Speaker 5 (03:44):
Yeah, So in both of our professions, a lot of
folks played from middle school on up through high school
even college sports. So once you enter the professional environment,
people start playing rec league BALLSTFF like that. So it
just kind of bounced off playing in recreational leagues and
getting thegether and saying, hey, let's you know, let's go
out and see who who's best, and it just really

(04:05):
got started in a fun manner. It still is a
fun manner, but we joke around a lot with it
and have a lot of banning back and forth. But
it started as you know, a lot of folks that
still are very athletic and have that desire to do
something and just a great way to come out and
do for charities.

Speaker 1 (04:22):
Yes, it's a great event and it's only ten dollars
to get into the game. And it's happening right here
at truest Point Stadium in high Point. And I've been
very lucky to interview a lot of organizations throughout the
community of high Point while I've been here, and it
all comes back to just this sense of community that
high Point has. And it's almost like someone a group
of people woke up when Dan and said, you know what,

(04:42):
enough's enough, Let's make this community better. So I am
curious what ways maybe that the police department and the
fire department are making high Point a better community that
we don't see the behind the scenes stuff.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
Perry, you want to start.

Speaker 6 (04:57):
So the biggest thing another third deportman in police performer
seen as emergency responses and now going lights and Sirron
on the road. But there's so much more involved to it.
You know, we have to prepare and train for that
before they even go on the fire truck, but then
to continuously train. But in the community, we're very big

(05:17):
in community involvement and being involved with community groups, making presentations,
fire safety and any way we can be involved within
the community, especially this is a big time of year
coming into.

Speaker 1 (05:32):
The fall, and how is it a big time of
year for you in terms of do you see fire
numbers increase.

Speaker 6 (05:38):
Or more on the the community involvement side of it,
more involved there, but fire activity can pick up as
it gets colder, obviously with heating means and things like that.
But we're pretty consistent across the year as far as
call volume.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
Goes awesome And Captain Andrews, what are some things need
to the police department because so often you see a
cop and you immediately go to the speed limit if
not two miles under, and you just like ten and
two when you drive. But you guys are out there
doing so much good for the community more than just
traffic stops and ye whatnot.

Speaker 4 (06:10):
We have a community division that is focused on non
enforcement actions and our goal is to get out and
do positive interactions with the community. Get to know our community,
listen to them and what their needs are on what
some of their concerns are, and then we address is
We don't just hear it, We address the concerns and

(06:32):
try to make High Point a safer location, and then
we incorporate our patrol in with it as well. And
our detectives. We're getting involved with community activities and us
also police and in crime fighting. That's our number one
thing to make high Point the safest.

Speaker 1 (06:49):
And I have a group of people in here doing
everything they can every day to make sure high Point
is a safer community.

Speaker 2 (06:54):
And we're very we're very grateful for that, so thank you.

Speaker 1 (06:56):
There's a lot more going on than just a softball
game at the event.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
We're very excited for it.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
But what are some things happening in the stands and
maybe before and after the game?

Speaker 2 (07:05):
Yes, absolutely so.

Speaker 3 (07:06):
We are going to be having all sorts of family
friendly activities happening. We're going to be doing on field
games between the innings. We'll have Chief Cheeks and Interim
Chief Brian Evans out there racing the kids on the basis.
We're gonna have some dizzy bats.

Speaker 2 (07:21):
We've got all sorts of things planned. We've got it.
What are dizzy bats?

Speaker 3 (07:25):
So, the easiest way to explain it is you put
your forehead on a bat and you just spin around
until you get dizzy, and then you have to run
a straight line to try and brace someone to win.

Speaker 2 (07:37):
People want to get tickets, where can they get them?

Speaker 3 (07:38):
So You can get the tickets on the Rockers website
or one of the Rockers box offices and they are
ten dollars.

Speaker 1 (07:44):
Apiece, perfect, and five goes to the fire department. Five
goes to the police department. In theory you split them even.

Speaker 3 (07:50):
Yes, absolutely, everything will be split down the middle at
the end of the game.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
Okay, So let's talk about the teams we have this year.
It is tied to and two. We got some confidence
going on on both ends.

Speaker 2 (08:01):
Owen.

Speaker 1 (08:02):
What is the fire department bringing this year? What can
we expect? Are you Pitcher? Are you Catcher? Are you
just playing all of it because you're so amazing?

Speaker 5 (08:10):
I'm actually the head coach this year.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
Okay, so the pressure is definitely on free year if.

Speaker 5 (08:14):
Sure's on me big time. So this year we're bringing
after last year's victory, We're bringing that spirit coming in
and we won't bring home the win again. Like I said,
being tied to and two, it's my last year, so
I will ended up on the wind.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
How long have you been with the Fired are you retiring?

Speaker 5 (08:31):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (08:33):
Twenty nine years? Wow?

Speaker 1 (08:34):
Okay, see, now I have to route Captain Andrews. I mean,
how do I say no to this?

Speaker 4 (08:41):
Just going on the gift of the recliner. Now I'll
call it. I really think that's what we should do.
But we're going to We're still going to bring it home.
We let them have it easy last year and take
the win, so this year we can bring a bigger
crowd to see this tie breaker.

Speaker 2 (08:57):
Awesome, it's so so to go back on that.

Speaker 5 (09:01):
Yes, here's where it really goes. So when they need
all absorbonal wreck, they call us. When they need a
clean bathroom, they come to the fire station. So there's
a lot of things that go on behind the scenes
that you don't know about that we go out and
help them out with.

Speaker 1 (09:16):
So let me get this straight. They need you, but
you don't need them.

Speaker 2 (09:20):
This is a big year for us.

Speaker 5 (09:22):
I'm turning it over to a new guy. Will not news,
but he's very passionate, So I want to turn it
over on a positive note. But I've got a lot
of guys that have played, allowed me to play with them,
and then allowed me to coach them this last couple
of years. So we definitely want to go out on
a bend.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
Okay, well, we'll see what happens.

Speaker 1 (09:40):
That event, by the way, is coming up September seventh,
three point thirty at truest Point.

Speaker 2 (09:46):
What time do gates open up at?

Speaker 3 (09:47):
Gates open at three o'clock?

Speaker 1 (09:49):
Perfect? And Emily, what else is going on in the community?
Maybe coming up with the police department, and if one
of you want to get involved, some things coming up
with the fire department.

Speaker 2 (09:58):
What's all happening?

Speaker 3 (10:00):
September is actually going to be a very busy month
for us at the police department. We host an annual
community Day, so that's coming up at the end of September.

Speaker 1 (10:08):
Which stay tuned because we're going to be interviewing that
about you about that coming up very soon.

Speaker 3 (10:13):
And then we also have an event right before Battle
of the Badges. We're doing a carnival, partnering with the
Oak Few Citizens Council and so we'll be out there
at their rec center with some games, just playing. We
do a lot in the community. We don't always do
big scale events. Sometimes we just do school visits or
things like that. But we've got a lot coming up.

Speaker 2 (10:33):
Aweso in owen Berry, what's coming up with the fire department?
Anything you want to.

Speaker 6 (10:36):
Add, It's a lot of the same activities actually, Honestly,
the police Department, Fire departmer involved in a lot of
the community. Same community outreaches in groups, especially on the weekends,
is very big. But we have September eleventh coming up. Yeah,
that's a day remembrance for us. And like I mentioned earlier,

(11:01):
is coming into the cooler months, the fall carnivals, in
the our prevention week in October, and there's a lot
going on.

Speaker 1 (11:09):
And I know, I don't know if you can invent this,
but how come the battery and in your smoke detector inevitably
always goes dead in the middle of the night. It's
never only a Tuesday afternoon and you're like, oh, let
me change the battery. It's two am on a Thursday.

Speaker 6 (11:25):
Good boy.

Speaker 1 (11:27):
As a bank captain, Andrews, what are some things people
can do just to incorporate safety into their own lives,
maybe keep their home safe and sound.

Speaker 4 (11:36):
I would say we'll start with we've had an increase
in motor vehicle thefts, which has spiked our crime rate,
so please lock your vehicles. The police department just this
morning did a steer and will lock drive to give
away free steering will lock, so hopefully some people took

(11:57):
advantage of that. Please do not do not have a
gun in your vehicle, Like, don't leave it in there
overnight for your car to get stolen, your gun to
get stolen. That just puts guns in hands that they
don't need to be in. And then look out for
your own neighborhood if you see something suspicious. We respond
because of calls a lot of times. Yes, we have

(12:19):
officers out being proactive, and we have great men and
women out on the street, but we also rely on
citizens calling us and telling us what's going on. You
don't have to give your name if you don't want,
but we would really like for the people on the
street to be our eyes and ears and work with
us to reduce crime.

Speaker 1 (12:38):
Aw so well, thank you so much for being here today, Emily.
One more time give us the basic about the Battle
of the Badges and how people can get involved.

Speaker 3 (12:45):
So we will be out at Trysts Point on the
afternoon of September seventh at three point thirty playing the
Fire Department against the Police Departments charity softball game. And
you can get tickets on the Rockers website or at
their box office and come out and meet our mascots.
We'll have Lieutenant Justice Officer Courage and Sparky there.

Speaker 2 (13:06):
So come out and see us.

Speaker 3 (13:07):
It'll be a fun afternoon.

Speaker 2 (13:08):
Well, I'm excited. Are you going to be Sparky?

Speaker 1 (13:10):
I have a tirefighter corner who had like, I feel
like there was a conversation going on, like you got
to be in the mascot costume this year.

Speaker 2 (13:16):
No, no, he's not. Okay, well he.

Speaker 5 (13:19):
Was signaling to me. Was for remind folks that the
Rockers have been very generous this year, and with the
purchase of our ticket, you get a general mission ticket
to the Rockers game later that day.

Speaker 2 (13:30):
Oh, perfect on Sunday.

Speaker 1 (13:31):
Awesome. So a weekend at the ball field. I love it. Well,
thank you all for coming in. I'm giving you a
round of applause. I think you're pretty cool. And uh,
Captain Andrews. Afterwards, you'll give me that special get out
of ticket free cards that you have.

Speaker 4 (13:44):
We don't really have them, but I can tell you
how you can volunteer.

Speaker 2 (13:49):
Perfect. Thank you so much for being here.
