Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Carolina Cares.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
It's Scottie Blaisdell and Hannah Tyler and we're going to
welcome Pam Baldwin this time. She's from Women in Motion
of high Point and that's where we are now here
with our brand new studio, so it's so nice to
meet our neighbors.

Speaker 1 (00:14):
Welcome to the show.

Speaker 3 (00:15):
Thank you, thanks for having me and give us.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Kind of an explanation maybe at the nutshell version of
what Women in Motion is, and thanks for slowing down
to do this, because if you're in motion, it'd be.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
Hard to interview you.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
We definitely are in motion.

Speaker 4 (00:30):
We are an initiative actually under the nun A Way
of Greater high Point, and our full mission is just
to empower women and to elevate them to the next
level in their personal lives or in their careers. And
what's really cool about that is that we're for women
on the ground running, women who are in a job
or trying to get a new job, or trying to
get to some level, or maybe you retired and you're

(00:50):
not ready to quit and you want to give back.
So we're really for those women on the ground running
and helping them get to the next level.

Speaker 1 (00:56):
And how did you get involved.

Speaker 4 (00:58):
I got involved, Well, it started back in twenty seventeen
and I actually had come to a couple of events
and I was a full time artist at the time,
and Martha Yarborough, who she actually was a mentor to
me when I was an artist in trying to sort
out another nonprofit organization at the time, she asked me
to lead. In twenty twenty one, she called me and said, hey,

(01:19):
I would love for you to take on the executive
director role of Women in Motion. We're kind of having
to start fresh again and we just need someone who
can take it to the next level because they were
completely volunteer ran at that point, they had no executive directors,
completely volunteer led, and so she asked me if I
would come on and just help them build this community

(01:39):
and write grants and do all these things. So it's
a pretty cool journey to see where we are today
and all because of you know, Martha just asking me
to see if I would be willing to jump on
full feed.

Speaker 5 (01:51):
In what ways are you building this community? Is it networking,
is it social? Tell me all about how you guys
connect women.

Speaker 4 (01:58):
So we do that through networking events, okay, and our programming,
so our networking events are open to everybody. We just
invite women to come. We create the space and they
come and they're the magic, right. It's not us, it's
not me. It's the women who come because they're ready
to connect and get other women to next levels, or
they're looking for something and they find that through our community.

(02:20):
So we have networking events several times a year throughout
the community. We do them in Thomasville. We just had
one in Thomasville and high Points. We've had them just
different areas, localized because we try to meet the women
where they are. And then in addition to those networking events,
we also have programs so we find what the women need.
So when when the women come to us or we

(02:41):
just hear them say, like one year, we had a
financial wellness thing because we heard women say, my mom
is getting older, they're aging, or I'm aging, I need
to retire soon. I haven't thought about these things. So
we saw that as a need and so we geared
our GWIN program, which is called Gathering Women for Education
and Networking. We took that program and we geared it
towards finance. This year, our theme is wellness. We saw

(03:05):
that women have been running hard since COVID and they
haven't stopped. So this year our real main focus is
making sure when women tap into wellness and self care
so that next year they can continue to run. And
so with that, we had our GWIN program, which is
focused on emotional wellness. We had Eylon degree Or come
in and do a healing workshop in the fall. We're

(03:26):
going to talk about burnout.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
Can I like healing meditation? Let's go yes, this is
a good question.

Speaker 1 (03:34):
Let's let's follow up on that.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
How is someone eligible to be a part of this community?
Is there are there age restrictions? Is is there a
place in life you need to be to be a
part of it?

Speaker 3 (03:45):
It is for all women. We all women.

Speaker 4 (03:47):
We have women from twenty five all the way to
eighty participate in our programs and anyone can be a
part of it. You don't have to be like a
member paying dues to come to programming. There's perks to
being a member.

Speaker 3 (03:59):
Trust me.

Speaker 4 (04:00):
Brush is a beautiful thing and we can talk about
that in a minute. But any woman can be a
part of this. Any woman who is just trying to
advance personally or professionally, they are welcome to join us
in anything that we do.

Speaker 5 (04:09):
And I have to imagine it's fantastic. See all of
these ages come together, women who are in so many
different phases of their lives, whether you're the new college
grad or you're eighty and you're retired and grandchildren's sharing
life advice and stories together. And yes, oftentimes at the
end of the day, maybe what someone who's seventy five
is going through in some way, shape or form, a
twenty five year old can relate to because it's oh,

(04:31):
like I get that feeling or totally understand.

Speaker 4 (04:34):
Yeah, yeah, agree, coume to percent. Like the women who
are retired coming in, they have this beautiful experience that
they can pour into these other women. Another cool thing
is just the connection. So the amount of women who
were like I needed a job and I met someone
at a networking event and I got into this different
kind of pivot in my career. Or we had a
one woman who was seventy five, I think, and she

(04:55):
went to a Gwynn workshop and ended up going back
to college.

Speaker 3 (04:58):
Wow, oh my goodness.

Speaker 4 (05:00):
The inspiration that they feel coming from these things, and
it's really cool that we're interested. I always say, when
you come to an event, it's like an old friend,
Like you're welcome like an old friend. It's not stuffy
you people talk to you, and it's genuine, vulnerable connections
with women, and I think they crave that.

Speaker 5 (05:20):
I am curious. Networking can be very intimidating for some people. Yes,
any tips tricks you have that if someone's I want
to go, but maybe I'm afraid to make that step
because I think a lot of times people think they
have to be these big, over the top personalities to
go to networking. And that's not the case. No, it's
not to go to networking. It's really about what you
can give. It's not always what you can take. So

(05:40):
I always say, when you're going into a networking event,
just think to yourself, Okay, what do I have to
offer somebody?

Speaker 4 (05:46):
Like what can I give? What gifts can I give?
And then naturally you'll find people that connect with you
on a level that you can kind of like get
those resources from too. And I've been to stuffy networking events.
I've been to events that are kind of and that's
the beauty of us and what we do. You're welcomes
like I have an entire Greek team who their job

(06:08):
is to When you see a woman walk in like
you don't bombard her like that's can be intimidating too,
But you know, no one stands alone like you're always introduced,
and we have a ton of connectors in that group.
So I'm a connector myself. So it's like, oh, let me,
let me introduce you to so and so, who you
know can introduce you to someone else. And it's just
it's organic. We're not fake, which is what makes us

(06:29):
really unique.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
I think Women in Motion is the organization Women in
Motion of High Point, and Pam Baldwin is here with us.
So Pam, I have to I have to ask, like,
is there a particular story that jumps out when you
because I know you mentioned mentoring where someone came in
one way and left.

Speaker 1 (06:49):
Completely different, transformed in their mind.

Speaker 4 (06:52):
Maybe yeah, So I can actually give myself an example
of that. You know, I came into this organization, you
know as an artist, right, I was a full time artist.
I had a career and they practice what they preach.
So these women on my leadership team have poured into
me and they've taught me so much about leadership and
what I need to do to succeed and to grow

(07:15):
and to encourage other women. So just even from the
beginning stages, like I've seen that I might have to
come back to you and let me think a second
for a snother story.

Speaker 2 (07:27):
Well, that's a great story right there. I mean, sometimes
I think you can kind of almost get on a path.
It's not necessarily satisfying all of who you are inside,
and sometimes you need to need a little bump, a
little correction.

Speaker 3 (07:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (07:43):
I think one of the greatest stories that's happened recently
is Yolanda Greer, who I mentioned earlier. She led our
Emotional Wellness workshop where she took art and taught us
how to use it as a healing, a way to heal,
a way to self care. Yolanda came to us at
one of our summits. It was like three summits ago,

(08:04):
our summit we can talk about in a second as well,
but we have these full day women summits and she's like,
I would really love to come, and so we sponsored
her with like, hey, yes, we want you to come
enjoy this. She has come to all of our events.
She has poured into it, and we have seen her
growth to where she came, you know, starting, as you know,
an artist trying to find her way to leading a

(08:25):
workshop that was maxed out at seventy women.

Speaker 1 (08:28):
Wow.

Speaker 4 (08:29):
So to see her growth and her mentorship like she
mentors others now, but to see how the women kind
of like embraced her, and that those are the magical
stories I think of women emotion where we have women
who just come and they and they participate, and then
all of a sudden we see them flourish like we're
the ones who are uplifting and encouraging them. They're the magic,

(08:51):
they're the stories. It's not us, it's them, and we're
just there to support and lift them and guide them
to get them to where they need to be.

Speaker 2 (08:59):
And stick around just a few minutes. Pam's going to
tell us about an event you can go to as well.

Speaker 5 (09:03):
I do want to mention the grants that you guys have.
Not only are you there to uplift women, you know,
spiritually and on the inside, but also to help them
fund their dreams.

Speaker 3 (09:10):
Can you tell us a little bit about that?

Speaker 4 (09:11):
Yes, so our grant program it is fully funded by
our members. Membership is optional, but membership has its perks,
and that when you become a member of Women in Motion,
you get to contribute to our giving pool, and so
this year, fully funded by members, we're giving out a
ten thousand dollars grant to another nonprofit organization serving women.
So our Women we serve women on the ground running,

(09:33):
we're serving working women. But a lot of the organizations
that can benefit from this grant organizations who are serving
women in another capacity. Maybe they're helping women get off
their feet, maybe they're helping women and their families grow.
We've had pregnancy centers apply the why w's applied this year.
Our grant's kind of unique. We saw a need for

(09:56):
these nonprofits who are very small and that have a
hard time competing against large nonprofits, and so this is
a completely capacity building. When they get this funding, they
can use it to keep their lights on, they can
keep it or use it to pay the executive director.
This is just for their organization to kind of have
a ten thousand dollars non restricted funding, yeah, which that

(10:20):
is unheard of. It's really hard to get operational funding.
So this year is a little bit different. Next year
we'll go back to programming programs that support women, but
this year it's specifically for women's organizations and just helping
them get off their feet and just get those operational dollars.

Speaker 1 (10:39):
I know that we were before we went on the area.

Speaker 2 (10:41):
We were talking about social media and it seems like
we live in a world that and forgive me for
having to say that, it's so cynical.

Speaker 1 (10:48):
It just tears people down.

Speaker 2 (10:51):
It's that old story of the crabs in a bucket
and they just grab each other and pull each other down.
It sounds like you're trying to break that pattern. You're saying,
let's get together and let's lift each other up.

Speaker 4 (11:02):
Yes, one hundred percent. You know the hashtag, you know,
women support women. It's totally overused, but this is exactly
what we're doing, you know, and I can't say it enough.
You know, like we are just bringing these women together.
We are just the hub, right, We are creating the opportunity,
and they're the ones doing the work and supporting each other.
It wouldn't work if they weren't so giving and loving

(11:22):
and really wanting to empower other women.

Speaker 2 (11:25):
And you know, even our families sometimes can be a
hindrance to us because they, I don't know, they have
a finite way of thinking and you're you're going into
a meeting with these women who see things a lot
bigger than maybe you do, and even your family does.
So go be inspired if you don't have this, That's
what I'm getting.

Speaker 1 (11:44):
Out of this.

Speaker 3 (11:44):
Yeah. Yeah, you will be inspired.

Speaker 4 (11:46):
I mean when you walk into an event, you will
leave with some kind of connection or some kind of
inspiration or even a program that you come to like,
you leave inspired.

Speaker 3 (11:55):
I mean that is our main goal.

Speaker 4 (11:56):
And actually one year we did teach a class on
social media because a lot of women are like, I
need to learn how to use this, and we're like,
all right, let's do it. Speaking of events, you guys
have on coming up, tell us about it. Yes, So
we have an event coming up. It is August the
twenty ninth, and it is all about celebrating our voices
and so we'll be awarding our grant to the grant recipient.

(12:17):
We are in the process of our members voting on
the grant because they get to vote on the final
grantee and we'll award that. And we'll also have a
special special production by Shared Radiance called Sisters of Mind,
and it's going to celebrate the resilience and determination of
women's suffrage. So it's going to be a really unique experience.

(12:38):
This event is going to be free, but there is
limited space. It's a way for us to just encourage
people to come out and support women and support women empowerment.
So August of twenty ninth at the High Point country
Club five thirty to seven thirty.

Speaker 1 (12:51):
And do we sign up a not we, but would
someone sign up ahead? Yes?

Speaker 4 (12:55):
Yes, if you will visit our website which is www
dot Women in Motion h dot org. It's on our website,
or find us on social media which is Women in
Motion HP.

Speaker 2 (13:05):
Now I assumed I was eliminated because of the name.
So this is a women only organization.

Speaker 4 (13:10):
This is a women or only organization, but men are
welcome to come and support us, especially for this event
where there's a performance. And so if if a man
would like to, you know, come and just show that
he believes in women and their empowerment, like of course,
like this is the Grant celebration. Is a great place
for them to come and show their support to women
for this one. We also have another program that is

(13:33):
coming up in the fall which is really great. It's
called the Kitty congdon Mentoring Series and This was sponsored
by the Daughters of Kitty Congden and this is such
a great program because it teaches women to be mentors.
It's a domino effect. If we teach women to mentor
other women, there are more female leaders in the community.
And it's applications are now open. You can visit our

(13:54):
website and sign up for that if you feel like
you want to be trained to be a mentor.

Speaker 1 (13:59):
Let's get that website one more time.

Speaker 3 (14:00):
It is a www dot Women in Motion hp dot.

Speaker 2 (14:05):
Org and the big event is going to be August
twenty ninth. If you want more details, go to that website.
Pam Baldwin Women in Motion. It's been a pleasure, it's
been great.

Speaker 3 (14:14):
Thank you so much for having me.

Speaker 1 (14:15):
All Right, it will be back with more on Carolina Cares.
