Speaker 1 (00:02):
This is the Wichita Weekend Podcast from iHeartRadio Station's ninety
seven point nine B ninety eight one oh two to one,
The Bowl Channel nine six three and All one oh
seven three. I'm your host, Don Guidas, thanks for joining us,
and our guest today on the Wichita Weekend Podcast is
Megan Schapau. She is the public Information officer for the

(00:23):
City of Andover. Megan's a great friend. You've been to
Wichita Weekend Interviews before I have. Yes, Well, it's wonderful
to have you back in the studio and you are
back because we have a very special day coming up
in Andover on Saturday, May seventeenth. Tell us about it.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
Yeah, So we have our brand new Heritage Fest event
which we have never had this before. This event is
all about tourism, trying to bring in people from out
of state all over Kansas to visit the city of Andover,
which we know and love. Yes, our Convention and Visitors
Bureau is putting this on and hosting this at the
Heritage which I know, Don, you and I have talked

(01:02):
about the Heritage over the years, but I think a
lot of people still don't understand quite what it is
and where it.

Speaker 1 (01:07):
Is well for those who don't tell us, please yes.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
So the Heritage is a mixed use retail space off
of the corner of Kellogg and Yorktown Road. So the
SkyLife departments are on the top floors and then they
have retail on the bottom floors. So Livingstone's Cafe just
open in October, which our and Over residents were really
excited about. Flint Hill's Dental Group is now open as well,

(01:32):
and we're getting a social tap at the Heritage as
well later this summer, which we're really excited about.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
Is perfect great timing too, but I know, we're.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
So excited, so all of that, and then it also
has some green space upon some walking trails for people
just to like check out, bring out their chairs, read,
walk their dogs, whatever they want to do to be outside.

Speaker 1 (01:53):
It's kind of the crown jewel of Van Over.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Yeah, and it's a little hidden too. It's kind of
a supposed to serve more as our like downtown gathering
space and Andover since we don't really have an old downtown.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
Right well, you know, you don't have an old downtown,
but you know what, the city of Andover does have
some history. Yeah, and that's part of what the Heritage
Fest is about.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
Right it does. Yeah, the Andover we're calling it the
Great Andover train robbery that happened in eighteen ninety eight.
So there was a train robbery in Andover. There were
a bunch of locals gathered at the Methodist church for
an ice cream social, and that's when the bandits thought
that that would be a good time to go to

(02:35):
the train depot and rob it and still some money.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
So body was at the ice cream The whole.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
Town apparently was at this ice cream social, which we
can get into that more later of how we're kind
of tying that into Heritage Fest. But yeah, Andover citizens
were mostly unharmed. They rushed to help and one brave
resident shot the neighbor or the robbers getaway horse, and
sadly we did have a local resident pass away who
was injured. And then, yeah, the outlaws, which were Samuel

(03:04):
Smith and Tom Wynn. I have these names written down.
They were later captured, So there you go. Never knew.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
I never knew. And you know, for those who think
Andover just sprung up in the mid twentieth century, no,
it's it goes back there. There's some history.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
I definitely yeah, my history there and I'm still learning.
We're working close with our Andover Historical Museum to kind
of resurrect some of that history and bring that into
the event as much as we can, to tell the
story in a fun way and have this trained robbery
kind of theme serve as our overall Heritage Fest theme.
Not to say we're going to have robberies going on
or anything like that crazy, but just kind of the

(03:43):
fun and whimsical way. We're going to have like an
old time candy shop and bird shop where we'll sell
some train whistles, conductors hats, and just have some fun
things that were around that time period, the eighteen nineties.

Speaker 1 (03:56):
Yeah, yeah, yes. And then Miss Purdy's old time photo.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Yes, so Miss Purdy, she's coming up from Texas.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
Oh boy.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
And it's very comparable, is what I'm telling. What I'm
telling people is like the brands and old time photos
that you can get, like those old CBO Western saloon photos,
very similar to what Miss Purdy is bringing to Andover
which we're so excited about. You can come out with
your family, doing by yourself, doing with your friends, and
get a photo taken and you'll get a free print

(04:24):
all included in your free admission to Heritage Fest, so
you don't need to pay a dime towards this.

Speaker 1 (04:30):
It's all free.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
That is free.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
That is included, so yeah cool. And she has the
costumes and stuff. Yes, don't have to come unless you want.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
Well, we are having a costume contest too, so you
can dress and you're like eighteen nineties attire or dressed
like a train. I don't know, however you want to
look at that. We're going to have a costume contest
for the best dressed group and the best dressed individual.
So we're excited about that too.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
Fun family day, Yeah, really fun, it really is. Make
a quick break and be right back with our discussion
with Megan shape Off from the City of Andover about
Heritage Fest. This is Wichita Weekend Podcast. You don't have
to live in Andover to have a great time at
Heritage Fest, the all new springtime celebration Sunday, May seventeenth,

(05:16):
eleven till four at the Heritage and Andover. Everyone's welcome
to enjoy fun activities, live music and ice cream, social
and more. Heritage Fest May seventeenth and Andover. It's free
to attend and we're back with our guest Megan shape
Off from the City of Andover. Now, Heritage Fest is
definitely kid friendly.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
Yes, yeah, kids' activities will be doing like some gold pannying,
tug of war, sack races, three legged rays again like
those old timey fun games for kids to you know,
get off their cell phones for the day and come
experience life back in the day.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
Thank you. Get out and do some real life, yeah,
instead of the virtual things. Right, come on out and
experience it.

Speaker 2 (05:54):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (05:55):
At Heritage Fests Saturday, May seventeenth, kicks off at eleven am,
goes till later in the afternoon, about four something like that. Yeah,
And we're also going to have some live music we are.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
Yes, we're going to have The Haymakers will perform and
kick us off at eleven to one pm and then
we'll have a little bit of a break. We're going
to have a music scene somebody from music scene, a
fiddler come and perform at one and we'll do our
costume contest winners during that time as well, and then
the Diamond w Wranglers will perform the rest of the

(06:28):
afternoon from two to four and.

Speaker 1 (06:30):
The Diamond w Wranglers for those who don't know. They
are veterans, and boy they put on a great fun show.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
Yeah, they're really fun. We're excited to have them. So yeah,
and we'll have a cup of yoh too.

Speaker 1 (06:43):
Oh yeah, that's the ice cream. That's kind of how.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
That's so yeah, ice cream social ties back in we're
partnering with Cupayo that opened up and over a couple
of years ago. So they're going to come out and
serve free vanilla ice cream yogurt while supplies last.

Speaker 1 (06:57):
So yeah, oh man, really fun, just a great several
you know, a few great hours there. And I'm hoping
for a fantastic weather. I'm sure you'll have it.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
I am hoping so too, no rain, no tornadoes.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
You know, everybody's been living right, been working hard to
bring this to you, and you know, I'm sure there
was a large team of folk that came out to
help make this happen for you.

Speaker 2 (07:22):
Yeah. We have a planning committee who's been meeting since November,
so we've had some members from the end of Historical Museum.
The Andover Public Library has been a big part of
it because we actually had an art show a couple
of weeks ago, a big art show for the Heritage Fest.
A few staff members. Our event coordinator Beth of course,
has been running behind the scenes loading things up, doing

(07:43):
all those small details. And yeah, it's a lot of work.

Speaker 1 (07:45):
Yeah. Well, thanks to all them, and thanks to you
for being at the heart of everything and Over.

Speaker 2 (07:52):
We love it, We love it.

Speaker 1 (07:53):
Yeah, it's a great community and you don't have to
be an end Over resident correct.

Speaker 2 (07:58):
Yeah, we're really encouraging people from all over to come
out because you know, we have greater Handover days, which
is more of our community residential kind of hometown feel.
But this event, we're really trying to bring in people
from outside of Andover to visit andover see what Andover's
all about. Maybe stay and eat supper, you know that
Saturday night, come early for breakfast at Livingstons. So we're

(08:19):
just excited to get some new new people out Handover.

Speaker 1 (08:21):
Well, if you've always heard what a great place Handover
is to live and work and raise a family, and
you want to check out, check it out a little
bit more and find out some of the get to
meet some of the people there and find out some
of the history and the story of Andover. This perfect
way to do it. Yes, we would love to have them,
Okay and Megan. If people want to go online and

(08:42):
learn more about Heritage Fest, where do they go?

Speaker 2 (08:44):
Yes, they can go to andoverks dot gov slash Heritage Fest.
All of the information about parking, activities, everything else is
on there, or you can follow us on Facebook. We
have a Facebook event called Heritage Fest as well.

Speaker 1 (08:57):
Heritage Fest Saturday, May seventeenth.

Speaker 2 (09:00):
Tickets to buy correct, Yeah, everything's included in admission, other
than you'll obviously need to buy your own food from Livingstones.
If you visit that merch and candy shop, you'll have
to buy your own merch and then Social Tap will
also be there serving beer and wine, so you need
to purchase that. But all pretty regular kind of things

(09:21):
that people are used to, buying food and merch, the
kids activities, your miss pretty photos, your music, all of
that is included in that free admission.

Speaker 1 (09:30):
