Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome to Wichiton Weekend, the weekly public affairs program from
iHeartRadio Wichiton ninety nine, ninety eight Well O two won
the Bull Channel ninety six three and Ault one O
seven three.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
If you know a veteran, if you're related to a veteran,
if you've got a veteran friend, you need to let
him know about a special event that's happening this Sunday,
October thirteenth, one o'clock in the afternoon. It's a veteran's
appreciation barbecue down in Derby at Warren Riverview Park. And
this is put on by can Vets United, and it's
(00:33):
my pleasure to have in the studio with us today
Dave Mitzel, he's the board president of Canvets. Welcome Dave,
thank you.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
I appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Hey, this is going to be kind of a nice barbecue.
This is a nice appreciation event coming up this Sunday.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
Huh oh, absolutely, you know we're gonna have h We're
gonna have brisket, pork, some turkey. We have Livingstone's Diners
or excuse me, Strouds is actually going to be donating
some chicken. Nice, So it's it's gonna be a nice
little barbecue. Yeah, have a little bit of all the
sides and everything you can think of. It comes with
(01:07):
the barbecue. All my own recipes.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
So oh, excellent, great. And this is at Warren River
Riverview Park. They say in Derby, help me find that
in my mind? Where's that at?
Speaker 3 (01:19):
So it's essentially it's K fifteen, which is Baltimore had
changes into Baltimore, and it's uh the road where Taco
Tico is going, Okay to Hayesville. That's that's right across
the bridge.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
That's good enough if anybody that knows Derby would figure
that out and know right where to come. And like
we say, all veterans are invited.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Everybody's welcome, all veterans. One thing we don't we didn't
have on the flyer my fault.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
That's all right.
Speaker 3 (01:51):
We have all veterans there. It's free, absolutely free, eat
as much as you want me. If you're you know,
civilian wise, you know, we asked you to make a donation.
Uh kind of helps us kind of recoup a little
bit of that and be able to continuously help the veterans.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
Excellent, Okay, one o'clock Sunday, come out, have some good food.
Kind of have a little fellowship, you know, visit with
some fellow veterans and get to know these good people
at can Vets. Can Vets is a relatively new organization, right.
Speaker 3 (02:26):
Yeah, we started right before the pandemic and it kind
of came in at the right opportune time. The VA
had wasn't able to feed and help some of the
VET homeless veterans, right and we stepped up and teamed
up with Livingstone's Diner and we were able to do
well over one thousand sandwiches to provide to the homeless vets.
(02:47):
That's great, which allowed us to kind of get connected
with the VA. So we're kind of partnered with the
VA and with Passageways as well. So we all pull
our resources and it's why compete when we can help.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
So, Dave, what sense do you have? What do you
suppose the population of homeless veterans is in whichiton? Is
there quite a few? Is there more than we should have?
Speaker 3 (03:11):
There are several thousand? Wow, we have We are doing
our best to get it to a near zero, which
is documented homeless.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
Dude, that's huge.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
So you're going to have that that mixture of we're
not going to know. Yeah, but we are getting it
to that point. We're helping getting them housed and helping
them keeping the houses that they have, which is where
we come in with donations we receive. I'd like to
say one hundred percent goes to the veterans, but what
we end up doing is you know, two percent of that,
(03:43):
like the event we're doing right now, So we kind
of like we do use that money to be able
to have events to you know, bring in more donations.
But as far as board members or anybody, no one
takes a time wow wow. And it was one thing
I was set on from the beginning is I don't
want to be one of those organizations that guess gets
accused of embezzlement, so exactly, and I'd rather help the
(04:07):
help the veterans. And that's it.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
Be above board, be totally nothing to hide. You guys
are one legit and I think that's great. You're there
to help the vets. Now is the board all veterans.
Speaker 3 (04:22):
We currently have one other board member that's a veteran.
Our other board members are very patriotic and you know,
support veterans in general. But me and uh, one of
our other board members is you know, the only veterans
at the time.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
Thank you for your service. Man, before I forget to
say where where did you serve?
Speaker 1 (04:44):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (04:45):
Serving Iraq, Afghanistan? Oh man, you know a little bit everywhere.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
Desert storm.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
No, No, I'm a little a little young for that one.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
Okay, all right, So the the second big wave a then, wow.
Speaker 3 (04:59):
I think my first one that was in two thousand
and then. You know, I had some breaking service here
and there, but I was come and go for quite
some time.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
You have seen combat, you have been in it, so
you know what veterans go through. You know what a
people in the armed forces go through, and that's why
you've got the heart to help them.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
Out right, Yeah, and you know, and I'm medically retired
myself now, so it's it's one of those I've got
a lot of free time, Okay. I want to make
sure that I can utilize that free time to keep
keep my mind busy and keep me from you know,
thinking about that, which is a lot of times where
I put my head space in when I'm trying to
(05:39):
help a veteran is you know, I've been there. Uh,
you know, when I when I came back home, there
was a lot of things that happened, and you know,
I lived out of my truck for a while, so
you know, it's I know, the stress of it. You
can relate the heartache of it, you know. And if
I can prevent that from happening to another veteran, you know.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
Good on you man. That's awesome. Well, okay, in case
you just joined us, don't forget. We've got a special
veterans appreciation barbecue that's happening Sunday afternoon, one o'clock at
the Warren Riverview Park in Derby. Down there at three
twenty one West Market Street in case you want to
put it in your Google machine and you can find
(06:23):
your way to the outdoor picnic area. Absolutely totally free
for veterans. Come on out. It's a big thank you
and we'd like to get to know you. You know,
can Vets is here for you to help you out.
Canvets United. Dave Mitzel has been visiting with us today.
He is the board president for can Vets. Dave, do
(06:44):
you guys have a website or anything that we can
go to to learn more about you? Got to social
media or something like that.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
We do have a website. We're on Facebook. I apologize, Oh,
that's okay.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
I don't know my own phone number. It's the same
kind of thing.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
I'm lucky if I remember my names.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
I was just curious if there's a place that we
can send folks to get more in tune with what
you're doing there at Canvets you know. Oh yeah, he's
got business cards printed up, local heroes, local support. It's
Canvetsunited dot com and that is a good url to know.
(07:27):
Canvetsunited dot com and Dave Mitzel and his board are
there to help out these local heroes, give them the
local support they need and deserve, after all they've done
for us, after the many ways they've served us right
here in Wichita. So looking forward to and anything else
you'd like to contribute about or add about Canvets and
(07:50):
the work you guys are doing.
Speaker 3 (07:51):
Dave, you know, I'd definitely like to say, we have
a lot of a lot of opportunities that here in
the future we're going to be exploring. So uh, we'll, we'll.
I can't say much the moment, Sure, I think my
board would kind of kick my well yeah, but no,
(08:11):
we have a lot in the future that it's going
to be an amazing, amazing thing. Happening and currently. You know, again,
if you know someone's hearing this, you're having hard times,
you need help with something. I mean, we've helped out
with rent food cards. I mean, you know, it's it's
on need by need basis, and we do what we can.
(08:33):
And and once again what we do is we we
completely function off of donations. So you know, if you
just want to donate, we have a section in our
our website that allows you to be able to donate
and it automatically gives you the forms and everything you
need to file for a tax exemption for that or
(08:55):
for that donation.
Speaker 2 (08:56):
That's excellent, man, excellent, and can Vets United dot com
is where you would go to make that donation, and
they're always welcome. You guys are working so hard and
trying to pull all these things together, these great events
for vets and stuff, and we definitely appreciate it. So
looking forward to this one Sunday afternoon, one o'clock and
(09:18):
Dave will be behind the grill.
Speaker 3 (09:21):
Maybe I will be mingling. By that point, I will
be starting the smoking process. As of midnight Saturday. Okay,
I've got everything. I'm going to be smoking. And so
at that point we'll be done and I will be
mingling and talking with everybody that arrives and you know,
kind of giving answering questions.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
Hey, best wishes for great weather from what I've seen
in the forecast. Thank you, guys are going to score.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
I got lucky with scheduling this one.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
Yes, you did. Somebody's living right somewhere. I'm thinking it's you, man,
I hope so alrighty, don't miss that Veterans Appreciation Barbecue
you Sunday at one down in Derby. And if you'd
like to learn more, of course, go to Canvettsunited dot com.
