Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome to Wichiton Weekend, the weekly public affairs program from
iHeartRadio Wichita ninety seven, ninety ninety eight, Well O two
won the Bull Channel ninety six three and AULT one
O seven three.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
One of the best things about November has to be
the Say Grace Race on Thanksgiving Day sponsored by Grace
Med Medical Clinic. And in the studio with us today
on Wichita Weekend, we have doctor Julie Elder. She is
the interim CEO and the Chief Medical Officer for Grace Med. Hi, Julie, morning,
(00:37):
Are you all right there? We all loosened up and
ready to do some running on Thanksgiving Day?
Speaker 3 (00:42):
Ready, I'm getting there.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
All right? Okay? And also we have Felicia Saunders. She
is with us. She is the development resource director for
Grace Med. Hi, Felicia, how about you? You're ready for
Say Grace Race.
Speaker 4 (00:55):
We're so excited.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
This is going to be an exciting day. Really is.
For those who don't know what we're talking about. How
many years is this for Say Grace Race?
Speaker 4 (01:06):
Do you know our fourteenth year?
Speaker 2 (01:08):
Fourteen years, which means this pretty popular event.
Speaker 4 (01:12):
Yes, it's one of the biggest local five ks.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
Wow, and it happens every year Thanksgiving Day. Let's see here,
what time are we kicking about? Nine thirty in the morning, yes, right,
right and early okay, And we are going to depart from.
Speaker 3 (01:29):
Right at Topeka Street and the corner of Topeka in.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
Ninth okay, And then we're running five k kind of
through Old Town and a little section Riverside. I'm guessing
I don't know the route.
Speaker 4 (01:42):
It's actually down through Midtown, that historic neighborhood right behind
our Helen Galloway Clinic.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
Oh yeah, okay, all right? So are people able to
watch from the clinic and wave with the runners and stuff?
But that probably doesn't happen, does it? Because it's Thanksgiving
Day and you can get a.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
Great turnout from the neighborhood and the surrounding area, and
a lot of people come out to watch and cheer
on the runners and the walkers, and it's a it's
a wonderful event.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
It's a lot of fun, all right. Well, for those
who maybe haven't participated before and don't know the routine.
Is there an entry fee?
Speaker 4 (02:18):
There is? You can go to it say Grace, say
Gracerace dot com and all the information is there. Registration
is open. It's currently forty dollars to register, okay, and
you can do that online or if you would prefer
me anual, we have that option to down at our
administrative building at eleven fifty North Broadway.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
Okay, well that's I mean, forty sounds very reasonable. And
for that forty okay, let's talk about what the what
the runner gets for the forty Yeah, for the.
Speaker 3 (02:50):
Forty dollars registration fee, of course they get to come
out on Thanksgiving, get to do the five k race
with us. There's also a great packet for each partwipent
that has a lot of goodies in it, anything from
a free Chick fil A coupon to some other little
items from our sponsors. So a lot of neat things
(03:11):
in that packet. And then of course a Grace say
Grace T shirt and each participant will get a T shirt.
For the first fourteen hundred registrants, there are T shirts available.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
So how do you like the T shirt this year? Oh?
Speaker 3 (03:25):
That's really neat. Yeah, it's a great design. It actually
highlights the Olympic year that we had this year, and
so that was kind of our theme. So we're excited
for everybody to take a peek at the logo and
the T shirts.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
I'm going to guess, I bet you have some runners
that have collected shirts every year and probably have all
thirteen previous shirts and ready to pick up number fourteen
this year.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
Yeah, there's a lot of history with this race, I mean,
since we've been doing it so many years, and a
lot of the same folks come out year after year.
And actually it's highly competitive too. I mean there's some
really talented athlete that come out. I'm not one of
those personally, but normal, but yeah, but we do. We
get some really fast runners and some amazing times.
Speaker 4 (04:09):
Timer guys is out there to give that official chip timing.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:13):
Timer guys are so amazing. They are so dialed in
and they come out and do a fantastic job for
every event, and they're they're almost like Wichita fixtures for
most running events and I guess some cycling stuff and
things like that. It's always great to have many time
they're there. I know it's top notch, you know, I
(04:34):
know it's top shelf, and you know, you talk about
serious runners. I'm looking on your website here and the
thing that tips me off to serious runners is this
is a photo from a previous Say Grace Race, and
there's a bunch of people in tank tops. Here's a
guy with no shirt, So I guess they put the
(04:58):
shirts on when they get done or so, I don't
know if you can. And anyway, I'm teasing, because that's
how you know you've got a serious runner. When they're
out there, they probably run up to the temperature where
they just begin to perspire and get that steady state,
like the New York Marathon that was just last week
or so. So that always blows me away to watch
(05:21):
that thing. So you know, we don't have the New
York Marathon. We've got it better here in Wichita. We
got the Say Grace Race happening on Thanksgiving Day.
Speaker 4 (05:32):
Do we have prizes, Yes, we have a different age
category prizes. We have cash prizes each category. The first, second,
and third place winners also get to go home with
a dinner plate with our logo on it because our
tagline is run the Race and feature face.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
So I love that. We were talking before we got
started today about you know how many calories the end
average American shovels in during Thanksgiving Day? Julie, what did
you say?
Speaker 3 (06:04):
Yeah, yeah, it's about three thousand calories in a Thanksgiving meal,
so wow, a lot, quite a lot for one meal.
So you know, it's a great way to burn off
a few of those when you come out and run
the race.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
Yeah, one or two anyway. You know, I don't know
how many calories I would burn in a five K
I'm probably not going to be there with the guys
in the tank tops back at the back of the people,
all bundled up.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
Yeah, you'll be right with me. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
Julie Elder, she is the Interim CEO for Grace Med,
Chief Medical Officer and also Felicia Saunders, she's the Development
Resource Director for Grace Med Medical Clinic here in wichital
We've been talking about the oh so fun Say Grace
Race that's coming up on Thanksgiving Day, nine thirty in
(06:53):
the morning. Let's take a quick break and when we
come back, we'll talk a little bit more about the
Say Grace Race, a little bit more about all the
great things that Gracemed does for the Wichita community. Listening
to Wichta Weekend.
Speaker 5 (07:08):
The story of grace Men has always been told through
its people. Both those who served and those who it

us bearing the weight of living in the margins, and
we share the love of Jesus Christ with them by
providing compassionate, quality health care for all their physical, emotional,
(07:30):

Speaker 2 (08:31):
Now, welcome back to Wichita Weekend. It's the weekly public
affairs program from Myheart radio stations in Wichita, Kansas. Our
guests today are Julie Elder, the interim CEO for Grace
Med Medical Clinic, and Felicia Saunders. She is the Development
resource director for Grace Med. And we are here because
it's November and we're talking about one of the coolest
(08:54):
events happening in the holiday season. I guess because it
happens on Thanksgivay, and I'm talking specifically about Grace meds say,
Grace Race Thanksgiving Day. About nine thirty in the morning,
we're going to get started. Oh boy, we were talking
about all the ways that folks can get involved in
(09:15):
all the good things that are going to be happening
on that day. We have some entertainment coming, don't.
Speaker 4 (09:20):
We, Felicia, Yes, we're so excited. We're adding an EMC
this year, so Big Mike's Entertainment will be out there
about eight am to get the party going.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
All right, Well, we'll have turntables and the microphone.
Speaker 4 (09:31):
We might I don't know.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
What they have anymore they have that that is going
to be really cool. And then, of course we like
to take as good a care of our runners as
we possibly can, so along the route we've got some
things for their comfort and convenience.
Speaker 4 (09:45):
Right, Yes, we will have water stations out. Premiere Food
Services and Shields have donated water bottles for our runners
so they can stay hydrated. And following the race, we'll
have bananas and donuts donated by Lamar, Krispy Kreme and
Sam's Club.
Speaker 5 (10:03):
So come out, well.
Speaker 2 (10:04):
Yeah, you've you've pre burned those calaries, so to get
you home, you grab a donut, then you get home
and you start on the Thanksgiving dinner.
Speaker 5 (10:13):
Right why not?
Speaker 2 (10:15):
And I'm figuring too, if you go out and participate
in this event, then you get home and it's like, honey,
I don't think I can help with the dishes. I'm
kind of tired of that. Maybe not. It might not
be such a good excuse, but that's up to you.
That's up to the runners themselves. Now, we wouldn't be
able to do a great event like this without volunteers, no,
(10:36):
all right, And even at this time, you're still needing
some volunteers you can use them right.
Speaker 4 (10:41):
Yes, absolutely again. You can go to sagracerace dot com
and you can register to volunteer. Each volunteer does receive
their own special say Grace shirt. They're red this year,
super comfy. So get signed up. We do need some
more course direction volunteers to cheer those runners on.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
Okay, now, do you already have a bicycle rider to
lead the runners on the route? We do?
Speaker 4 (11:06):
Clark Ends he was actually one of the founding members
of the race.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
Clark Ends is a running legend in Wichita. Yes, and
he's like the father of run Wichita, is he not?
I think I believe so? And so run Wichita will
have a heavy presence too at the say Grace Race.
Speaker 4 (11:25):
He will be there doing gear check in that morning
gear check in.
Speaker 2 (11:30):
Let's see what what what gear do I bring to
the say Grace Race?
Speaker 4 (11:34):
Whoever's going to keep you warm?
Speaker 2 (11:36):
Oh? Yeah, okay, so if you come with your jacket
and stuff, yes you don't show.
Speaker 4 (11:41):
Up at those belongings that counts.
Speaker 2 (11:43):
As I was, I was thinking about all the people
I saw on the website in their in their tanktops
and singlets or shirtless. You know, I think I see
one guy in his socks, Well, what gear did he bring?
Speaker 4 (11:56):
Do you see a turkey in there? Because we have
our costume contest that they run in their costumes.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
I do see that gobbler somewhere you're in there, back there.
That's really cute. Great, great event and well worthed, a
family friendly, absolutely great way. You know, look at it
this way. Maybe if you've got to get some of
the family out of the house that morning so that
whoever's preparing the meal and getting things ready can do
(12:23):
So this is a great way to get the house
empty for a little while.
Speaker 4 (12:26):
And if you have the biggest team, you can get
our Biggest Flock on the Block award and go home
with a trophy.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
Biggest flock on the Block. You know, I was looking.
There's another one. There's the uh, the gabbling or no, no,
the Galloping Gobbler Award.
Speaker 4 (12:42):
Yes, our fastest team and I love this title.
Speaker 2 (12:47):
The Whitty Wishbone Award.
Speaker 4 (12:50):
Yes, let's get creative with those names.
Speaker 2 (12:52):
Okay, so think hard about that team name now and
get real creative and come on out. Oh there's one
more for the best dressed team.
Speaker 4 (13:01):
What's that one, Felicia, Yes, the fancy feathers. So come out,
have a group costume, and like I said, go home
with a trophy.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
That's right. You can be as competitive as you want
to be, but the main thing is come out, have fun, participate.
This is a fundraiser for Grace Med. Helps Grace Med
do a lot of the great work that you do
in our community and all year long. I mean you
guys never ever close, that's.
Speaker 3 (13:29):
Right, and we're this year. Our proceeds from the race
are actually going to our newest clinic which is over
at Lincoln and Woodlawn. It's called our East Ridge Facility. Okay,
So we're really excited to finish that project out and
to open up that clinic in twenty twenty five. And
so we'll offer primary medical and dental services and behavioral
health at that facility as well. We'll also house our
(13:52):
quality assurance team and then our call center is currently
located over there too. So the proceeds from the race
will directly to opening that facility. Wow, Yeah, we're excited.
Speaker 2 (14:05):
Do you have like a rough time frame on that.
Speaker 3 (14:07):
Or we're targeting the spring of twenty twenty five sometime
in there as our goal coming up? Yeah, right around
the corner.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
Wow, you've expanded services. Okay, the East Ridge at Lincoln
and Lincoln and Woodlawn. So how many locations does Grace
mad have.
Speaker 3 (14:28):
That will be our seventeenth clinic.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
Seventeenth clinics in Kansas.
Speaker 3 (14:33):
In Kansas, we have two in Topeka, one in McPherson,
one in clear Water, and then the rest of our
facilities are here in Wichita, scattered throughout the city.
Speaker 2 (14:43):
And if you are hearing us today and you're one
of those, maybe you're new to Wichita, or maybe for
whatever circumstantial reasons, you never got around to getting your
insurance set up, you you will not slip through the cracks.
Grace Med is here to help you, regardless of your
(15:03):
ability to pay.
Speaker 3 (15:04):
That's right, That's exactly what we do. When we see
folks who are insured. We see patients who don't have insurance.
We can help them see if they qualify for state insurance.
We can help patients regardless of their ability to pay
for an office visit. So we just encourage anybody who
needs primary medical or dental care to come on over.
(15:24):
And like I said, we also offer behavioral health services,
and so we love to look at people holistically, body
mind and spirit, and we really focus on whole person care,
so we welcome any and all.
Speaker 2 (15:37):
Truly is full service.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
It is.
Speaker 2 (15:39):
It is absolutely person and for the whole family as well.
Speaker 3 (15:43):
Yes, infants on up to elderly.
Speaker 2 (15:47):
So okay, well, outside of signing up runners for the race,
what kind of things are you seeing? What are patients
coming to Grace Med for this time of year.
Speaker 3 (15:56):
Well, we are just on entering cold and flu season,
so we're encouraging everybody to come on in get their
cold or excuse me, their flu shot, their COVID vaccines updated,
and of course we're seeing a lot starting to see
some sick visits as well. We are also just wrapping
up the back to school physicals and so if any
(16:16):
kiddos weren't able to get their school physicals completed, we're
happy to see them to be sports physicals or back
to school either or so we're just we're there for
the family. Like you said, we're there to help patients
navigate healthcare.
Speaker 2 (16:31):
So wow, well we'll keep up the good work. I'm
glad you're doing it. Wichita is blessed to have you,
Kansas is blessed. So there's a whole lot going on
at Grace Med. But the most fun thing happening at
Grace Med, of course, is the Thanksgiving Day, say Grace Race,
and we're hoping for a great turnout. I know we'll
(16:53):
have a great turnout, yes, regardless of weather, right, Felicia,
We'll be there because runners are a very hardy lot.
Speaker 3 (17:02):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (17:02):
Yeah, And when you say rain or shy, you don't
even have to say rain or shy.
Speaker 3 (17:07):
Yep, they are. And we're on track this year to
have a bigger race than we've had the past several years.
So that makes it even more exciting, I think for us,
because we're just hoping we can get as many people
possible to come out and join us for that five k.
Speaker 2 (17:20):
All Right, it's going to be a fun one and
somebody I'm sure will have time to figure out how
many calories they personally will burn on that five k
and see how much of that three thousand we.
Speaker 6 (17:32):
Can kind of.
Speaker 2 (17:35):
Be good to know, alrighty, well, Felicia, there was one
thing we hadn't yet talked about. We talked a little
bit about registration for the sag Race race, but the
online registration has a special date restriction. Right, They've got
a deadline on that Yeah, so.
Speaker 4 (17:54):
We will actually close our online registration at the end
of the day on November twenty six, give us some
time to get ready. Okay, but you can also register
the day of, but you have to be in person,
and we prefer debit or credit card that day, but
we will also have a cash option.
Speaker 2 (18:13):
Okay. Well, I'm thinking most runners that show up the
day of probably just have like one plastic card in
their waist band or something, or in their sock. There
you go. Some of these some of these athletes in
our city truly amaze me. I come to some of
these runs, and folks you didn't think could make it
(18:37):
just tear it up on that course. And a lot
of a lot of older folks too, which I think
is a real kick to see and just see everybody
come out and participate.
Speaker 4 (18:49):
When they come from all over to Yeah, I do
so it's exciting.
Speaker 3 (18:53):
My parents are signed up too, so they'll be there.
Speaker 2 (18:55):
Yeah, do your parents come in do the event.
Speaker 3 (18:59):
They're going to walk here, they're going to walk all right, yeah.
Speaker 2 (19:01):
Yeah, yeah, and that's an option too. We're not a
I mean, it's a timed event, but that's oh yeah,
not a requirement that you, yeah, hurt yourself, which I
would do if I did anything faster than a work.
So we know. If you're a if you're a frequent
(19:24):
runner in the Witchdar area, you're probably already planning to.
If you're looking for a wonderful way to kick off
Thanksgiving Day with your family and then go enjoy all
your holiday favorites totally guilt free, come on out to
the Say Grace Race on Thanksgiving morning about nine thirty.
Get all the info at Felicia.

Speaker 2 (21:23):
Welcome back to Wichita Weekend. The topic of the day
or the topic of the program is Gracemed Medical Clinic
here in Wichita, and of course, the wonderful Thanksgiving Day
Say Grace Race that we've been talking about pretty much
all program. And of course it's great to have our
guests Felicia Saunders and Julie Elder from Grace med right
(21:45):
here in the studio with us today. Looking ahead on
the calendar. I know the Say Grace Race is a
big one for you guys. And we also had the
Flapjacks for Hope, Hotcakes for Hope, hotcake of Flapjacks. That
could be another one, but Hotcakes for Hope has already
happened earlier this fall. But then we have another kind
(22:06):
of an interesting thing that's also a fundraiser coming up
in February.
Speaker 4 (22:11):
Yes, we're excited. This year will be our twentieth anniversary
of the No Show Chili Supper that's presented by our
Grace med Gild, a group of volunteers that they raise
money each year. We send out chili packets and then
Hope for a donation and return and that goes to
our patient voucher program and provide services to people who
(22:33):
need care.
Speaker 2 (22:34):
So the no show Chili thing is we make the
chili at home our own selves. Yeah, and then we
probably want to do a YouTube video or a photograph
or something of us enjoying the experience and describing the
extras that we put in our chili.
Speaker 3 (22:51):
Yeah right, yeah, we would love to see those if
people want to do that, absolutely idea.
Speaker 2 (22:57):
Yeah, well that's a great idea for February because I
think you know, we're chocolated out and it's cold outside,
and what a great way to help get behind Grace Med.
So we'll be watching for news about that coming up.
Speaker 4 (23:13):
Yes, And you can go to our website gracemed dot
org and if you're interested to get on that mailing
list so you don't miss out, you can fill out
the form there and we'll make sure to add to
our list.
Speaker 2 (23:22):
Okay, so much on your website. This thing is just
a gold mine of information about Grace Med and ways
that we can get in touch with you and all
the great services that you guys provide. Behavioral health is
relatively new, is it not, Julie.
Speaker 3 (23:40):
We've been doing that now for several years in partnership
with our medical providers. We help patients that may need
to make some changes or improvements, are ready to improve
chronic disease states or maybe quit smoking or working on
weight loss, or just different changes in their lives and
so our behavioral health specialists can come alongside them and
(24:03):
work in conjunction with our primary care providers to help
patients in whatever capacity that's needed. It's a really neat
way to augment the care and the services that we're
already providing.
Speaker 2 (24:15):
Wow, so are you getting good response to that? Are
people taking advantage of this?
Speaker 3 (24:20):
Definitely are. And one of the ways that we're reaching
across our clinics throughout Wichita is through the use of
an internal communication system called polycom. It's almost like a
telemedicine service, but it's internal and so a patient can
be at any of our clinics and receive those services
just through the use of this polycom. So it's a
(24:41):
wonderful way to utilize technology to continue serving our patients.
Speaker 2 (24:46):
Save a bunch of time and a bunch of legwork.
Speaker 3 (24:48):
Absolutely, and patients don't have to go across town or
to a different clinic. They can stay right where they
are at or where they're used to going to receive
those services.
Speaker 2 (24:57):
You guys never stop improving, stop innovating at GRACEMD. There's
always progress being made and you're on the go. I
love that. I mean, you know, We're always moving forward
with great new things. And of course we talked a
little bit about the new facility there at Eastminster at
Lincoln and Woodlawn, and man, oh man, all the great
(25:19):
things are going to be happening there. It's going to
be a real busy northeast corner of Lincoln and Woodlawn
for sure in Wichita. So and that is one of
the projects that's going to be funded by the Say
Grace Race. I'm doing a weave, yeah, that's right. I know.
Speaker 3 (25:38):
Our proceeds from this year's race will go to the
east Ridge location at Woodlawn and Lincoln, which is our newest,
our seventeenth clinic in the state of Clink, Kansas, and
we anticipate opening that in the spring of twenty five.
All right, stay tuned.
Speaker 2 (25:52):
Just right around the corner. So come on out, uh
and be a part of the Say Grace Race. If
you've done it before, I know you're already planning to
go because you had such a great time last time.
If you've never been, consider bringing the family out a
wonderful way to start Thanksgiving Day. And maybe as you're
doing that five k, whether you're walking or running, you
(26:14):
might be thinking about gratitude you know, or whatever you
want to focus on in your mind. What a great
way to do it. And I know we're going to
have fantastic weather and smiles all the way around.
Speaker 3 (26:27):
Yeah, it's so much fun, it really is. And it's
a great way for people to get involved with our
ministry and to not only have a great time on
the day of Thanksgiving with friends and family, but to
give back and to help us take care of patients
who so desperately need care. It's a really great way
for people to connect and to get involved in the community.
Speaker 2 (26:47):
All right, So don't be shy, don't be a stranger.
What would you be doing. You'd be watching the Macy's parade,
so you've seen it before. Come on out, have some
fun and join your friends as.
Speaker 4 (27:03):
They run the race. Than feed your face.
Speaker 6 (27:06):
