Speaker 1 (00:00):
Joining us now, Jonathan Savage our Fox course funding in
London as we're getting ready for the Pope's funeral this weekend. Boy,
the preparations are so underway right now, and also so
many people coming in for the remembrance and the funeral,
and then here we are off to the conclave.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Jonathan, good morning, Welcome in, Hi JT.
Speaker 3 (00:18):
Good morning.
Speaker 1 (00:18):
So they're finalizing all these preparations. So what is the
process now on Saturday at Basilica.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
Yes, so Saturday morning ten am is when the funeral
mass will take place. It's expected to be an open
air mass in Saint Peter Square right in front of
the dome over the Basilica. At the very front, of course,
will be the dozens of dignitaries, well over one hundred
delegations from around the world, including President Trump and the
First Lady. Beyond them, of course cardinals, bishops, archbishops from
(00:49):
around the world, and then further back, kens if not
hundreds of thousands of people filling up the rest of
Saint Peter Square and then down the boulevards all the
way back. It's going to be a grand occasion, is
one way of putting it will certainly be an emotional
on solemn occasion for many, a historic occasion, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
I would imagine security on something like this is just
astronomical and preparations to keep everybody safe is a daunting task.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
What do you know about all that?
Speaker 3 (01:18):
Absolutely it is. I mean, for starters, there will be
a no fly zone over the city of Rome, and
that'll extend to drones, and there are measures being taken
to protect the area against drones, including it would appear
security forces standing on the streets with weapons that look
(01:40):
like futuristic guns are futuristic RPGs but are in fact
electronic weapons which are made to I suppose, scramble the
drones and send them back to where they came from.
As well as that two thousand at least police officers
on the streets, metal detector's security cordons. But all done
(02:03):
in a way which not only protect the people in attendance,
but allows so many people to come into the area
and be part of this event.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
Yeah, it will take place at ten am Saturday morning.
I guess it's about what three in the morning our
time here in Central time zone in the United States,
all right, Jonathan, and then the conclave after that, as
the cardinals, I would imagine, are coming in and may
have already arrived.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
Yeah, the majority of them have arrived, and in fact
they have been already taking part in meetings once or
twice a day. And in these meetings they have been
discussing the funeral arrangements itself. They have been discussing all
the events leading up to and around the funeral, various
masses and rosaries, and who's going to be conducting them.
(02:51):
And eventually they will be talking about this conclave, this
election for the next pope. It appears as though this
conclave won't be until at least May fifth, probably May sixth.
That's because there's going to be nine days of official mourning.
The pool of cardinal electors, that's cardinals under the age
of eight who are eligible to vote, is around one
(03:12):
hundred and thirty five, but a handful of them are
believed to be too ill to take part, so it
will be slightly fewer than one hundred and thirty five
in themes.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
All right, quickly, Jonathan.
Speaker 1 (03:21):
Reaction in Europe over what's taking place now is Russia
attacks Ukraine again.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
More dead, more injured.
Speaker 3 (03:28):
Yeah, another horrifying event. At least nine people injured in
a drone and missile attack on Kiev. More than forty
drones in than missiles too, hitting at least five districts
of the Ukrainian capital, with death and injury in residential areas.
President Zelenski again saying that this is proof that Russia
(03:48):
are the terrorists, that Russia are the attackers, and that
Russia needs pressure put upon them. President Trump today with
a message to Vladmir puts In, saying stop the killing.
It's time for this to end. Please start negotiating seriously,
all right.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
Jonathan Savage in London, Thank you, sir, I appreciate it.
