Speaker 1 (00:00):
Mighty John the record guy, joining us now to talk
about the gold mine you're probably sitting on, don't even
know it, in your vinyl collection. John, welcome in, Thanks
for being back with us.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Good morning. Great to be with you. J Well.

Speaker 1 (00:11):
I got a quick story for you. When I lived
in California and moved from California to Miami, and this
was probably I don't know, I've been collecting albums for
years and years and years in the wooden crates. I
used to do DJ parties and things like that. I
probably had, you know, in radio, over two hundred and
fifty albums, vinyls, some picture discs, and some not even

(00:31):
open promotional copies. And so we're making the move, and
you know, it's like the fourth move now and I've
made in my career, and I'm like, why am I
taking these albums with me? We've moved on to CDs.
I really don't need these anyway. So my wife loved them.
She could kill me, still brings it up to this day.
So when she wasn't looking and the movers were almost

(00:52):
done packing the truck up to go to Miami from California,
I said, I'm not sure these are going to make
it in the truck here and the heat and everything
going across country, I want to I said, just put.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
Them in a dumpster.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
So I got rid of them all. So we get
to Miami and my wife says to me, where are
the albums? I said, yeah, you're not going to believe it.
If I just get rid of we don't really listen
to it. I know, I could kick myself. Now, how
much money do you think I launched in the dumpster?
Two hundred and fifty albums? I mean some going way
back to originals.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
She should have got rid of you and kept the albums.
I well, you know, most of the big money is
in rock and roll, country, blues, soul, and jazz. Those
are the big five categories. That's certainly the elba of
the Beatles are. That's probably where most of the value
is going to be found.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
Yeah, all right, So what kind of value we talking about?
A couple hundred bucks for an album or even more.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
We all depends on the record. I mean there are
Beatle records. There's a forty five by the Beatles called
Anna with Ask me why on the flip side. That's
probably the most valuable currently up to the thirty thousand.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
Dollars, Holy moly, thirty grand.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
Yeah, Anna, and ask me why on the flip side
on v J Records.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
Good heavens? All right, So the albums I threw away,
you know, like Rod Stewart's Do you Think I'm Sexy?
And Journeys, you know album those aren't grabbing thousands of
dollars today, are they.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
No, they're not. They're more in the ten to fifteen
dollar price right now.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
Okay, all right, so I don't feel too bad.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
Yeah I should have said there worth millions? All right? Now?

Speaker 1 (02:24):
Do people collect and trade these like they do collecting cards,
memorabilia and everything else? I mean, can you get into
clubs where you kind of buy and share and move
things around?

Speaker 2 (02:35):
Yeah? Well, there are a lot of record convictions, and
most every city has one of a couple of times
a year where dealers get together and the public comes
in and they buy and sell and swap records. It's
a big industry. If you're not into it, you might
not realize it. But there's a lot of money in
vinyl if you know what to look for.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
So can you invest in vinyl? Is that has gotten
to that point?

Speaker 2 (02:54):
Now? Well, a lot of people do a lot of
people that even aren't record collectors, they invest in it
because vinyl has continually gone up in value as the
years ago by. That hasn't been so true for baseball
cards and other types of memorabilia, but certainly vinyl continues
to go up in value.

Speaker 1 (03:10):
Well, thirty thousand dollars for the Beatles single, an I
would ask me, why on the flip side can you
find these collectors' items? Are these rare?

Speaker 2 (03:18):
Like you know, well, this one's rare. This one happened
in nineteen sixty four, and these copies were sent to
radio stations, not necessarily promotional copies, but they were known
as special DJ releases, and we asked the probably twenty
five hundred and all were sent out. So if you
know anybody in radio back at sixty four, say hey,
you get a copy of Anna by the Beatles.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
By the way, the Beatles concert is my first, very
very first concert. And when I lived in Cleveland, they
played in Cleveland, and I think it was sixty three
sixty four if forget, but my babysitter who's had tickets
to go with a boyfriend of the thing, and all
of a sudden, my mom and dad reminder. You know,
you're going to be sitting with the kids for a
couple of days. We're going on a business trip to
the behind, and she's like, well, can I mean, can

(04:02):
somebody help me? And you know, I mean, I'll take
one of them to the concert with me. I can't
give up these Beetles tickets, you know. So I remember
going with her and walking to this, you know concert.
I have no idea who they are and what's going on.
I was thinking, probably what eight years old, maybe six
years old. But so where do you find these types
of collector's items, Like, you know what other records are

(04:24):
bringing big money these days?

Speaker 2 (04:26):
Well, we find most of them at yart sales, flea markets,
thrist stores, estate sales. That's where we find most of them.
And again, you know, fifties and sixties rock, country, blues, soul,
and jazz, that's what you want to concentrate on. And
there are exceptions in the seventies and eighties can be
worth money too. For example, I found one of the

(04:46):
yart sale about two weeks ago, Martley Crue their first
forty five Stick to Your Guns, just the forty five
currently up to six hundred dollars, not bad, not bad. Yeah,
So where do people go?

Speaker 1 (04:57):
Somebody listening right now says, oh my gosh, I got
to check in what I got here, and they've got
stacks and stacks of these albums, stacks and stacks of
wax and forty fives. Where can people go to get
the value that they know it's legit?

Speaker 2 (05:11):
Well, go to our website, I hope you go there,
moneymusic dot com. Moneymusic dot com. You can have your
records of praise online or we put on a price
guide listing the values for over a million records and
that's available right on the homepage at moneymusic dot com.

Speaker 1 (05:26):
Now do they gather and garnish more money if they're
in really good shape or if the plastic is still
around them and that type of thing.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
Yeah, the better the shape, the more money. That's the
true with any kind of collectible.

Speaker 1 (05:37):
Yeah, the condition is everything, all right. So what's the
website once again.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
Money music dot com. And you might check out our
podcast simply called money Music on Spotify or Apple.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
All right, Now, when they get the value of the record,
you give them a quote on the value of this
and what it's worth. Does that mean that you're going
to buy it? Right away for that price from them.

Speaker 2 (05:57):
No, but we do provide. We do provide a list
of buyers in your area with every purchase.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
Well, I like that boy, Always good to catch up
