Speaker 1 (00:37):
Well, it is a time to get some work done
around the home. If you've got a question, feel free
to join us as we talk home improvement, maintenance repair.
It's eight hundred eight two three eight two five five.
This hours brought to you by Roto Ruter. They say
announced prevention is worth a pound of cure, and that's
so true when it comes to preventing a basement flood. Well,
(00:59):
let me tell you Roto Router Plumbing and water clean up.
They are the some PROMP experts and they can install
that back up some pump for you and prevent basement flooding.
Check it out for yourself rotrorouter dot com. All right,
as I said, we're talking about getting a few things
done around the home. As we talk about floods. I
always have always mentioned over the years that your number
(01:23):
one enemy of your home is water, and it's so
very true, from rotted wood to basement floods, to a
leaky roof and staining of drywall, but really water when
added to Mother nature and organic materials, breeds mold. And
one of the places that is very subject to that
(01:46):
is a cross space. If you have a cross space
in your home, we can talk about basements, but really
cross spaces. We do talk a lot about basements, but
cross spaces hold that same issue even more so. It's
you know, it's below grade. It certainly can be an
(02:09):
area where moisture is a big issue. You have more
organic material because quite honestly, a lot of cross spaces
that just dart maybe some rock, and when you get
moisture added in there, you get growth of mold, mold
spores and colonies, which is then creating an unhealthy home.
(02:35):
And we talk about April being you know, awareness to
unhealthy homes the month of April because may parts of
the country get a lot of rain. So if you
have a crawl space, and you know, some crawl spaces
you can get into other spaces not so much. But
(02:58):
if you ever really taking a look at your cross
space to see if there's a problem or maybe as
you go down into a basement area and there is
a cross space, maybe you have a strong odor a
stagnant odor. And one of the things that there's really
(03:20):
been happening in the whole cross space arena is encapsulation
and kind of creating an envelope of protecting it from
mold growth and drying crawl spaces out and that's kind
(03:40):
of what I want to talk about. If you just
take a look and well, i'll tell you what I've seen.
Some nasty crawl spaces. Uh, maybe you have one of
those where you have the insulation tucked up right underneath
the subfloor, so on the ceiling of the crawl space,
obviously not finished ceiling, but a lot of times you'll
(04:04):
find that insulation is wet, that insulation is very moldy,
and those most spores are quite honestly filtering through your home.
Then it's a colony and they reproduce and they look
for orgaining material. It's not hard to find in your house,
(04:25):
and the spores are already there, and the magic sauce
is water, and another colony develops. So examining if you
have insulation, is it intact, is it moldy? Is it
falling down? Should it be removed? Yes? Yes, yes. But
(04:45):
one of the things we're doing now is when I
say a whole house or whole cross space encapsulation is
if there is moisture, determining where that moisture is penetrating
into the cross space. Is it coming up through the
dirt through mother nature, the quote floor. And you know,
(05:09):
if the land around your home is slaping towards the
home and that water table's high, there's a good chance
you could actually have puddles of water in the crawl
space which have to be rectified in order to have
a healthy home. And it's not just by throwing plastic
over it. It would be installing a sump well with
(05:35):
a pump and catching that water that's rising to the
floor of the cross space. Maybe some drain lines in
that cross space they are going to route that water
to that sump well and then pump that water away
from the house. That's one. Maybe the water table isn't
(05:59):
that hot, but you have that moisture in the earth
underneath and it's radiating water vapor into that cross space.
And you've got wood subfloors you got with Joyce, you
got dust on the walls, and you've got a dirt floor.
You got it. You've got moisture again, which is going
(06:22):
to create mold growth and more colonization of mold, leading
to an unhealthy home. So we need to address those issues.
And again, if it's coming through the walls, I'm just
discussing on the floors. If it's coming up through the
walls or coming through the walls. I should say that
(06:46):
too is adding a lot of water vapor and can
be adding more colonization of molds. So we talk about
and you can talk to waterproofing companies, you can talk
to yourself and say, I gotta do something about this.
But certainly if it's coming up to the floor and
(07:08):
it's puddling and you don't have a sump well and
a sump pump, that's step one. If it's just damp
down there, you have a hard time controlling humidity. You
smell that moldiness, that stagnant air. It might be a
just kind of addressing how we can check the water
(07:30):
vapor in place, and starting with a vapor barrier on
the floor or on the dirt if you will, uh,
probably a ten mil fourteen mil pretty thick plastic overlapped
seams gravel to hold it in place. Maybe going up
(07:52):
on the wall a little bit, or taking a waterproof
coating or a waterproof paint and pain that wall and
checking that moisture where it's not going to radiate water
moisture through that wall so you don't really have to
worry about the ceiling. We want to address it at
(08:17):
its base the floor, in the walls, so a waterproof
paint on the walls, vapor barrier, plastic on the floors.
And if you want to add some warmth and get
some insulation up there, certainly foam. You can use regular
(08:39):
I say regular insulation insulation without a vapor barrier, no
paper or a plastic wrap to it. It's not needed
because we've addressed that at the floor and we've addressed
it on the walls. But you can put batting of
insulation up there. You have little spring waters that can
(09:01):
straddle between the joys and hold that in place. And
the reason it's falling down, if that's the case it's
fallen down it's moldy is you didn't really address the water,
and the water has made that heavy and it's gotten
moldy in its dislodged from the from the joys, from
(09:21):
the holders. If you will, so keeping that air to
a good level of humidity, remember the old line, you know,
fifty five percent. That's you really don't want any any
wetter more. You know, you just don't want humidity running
seventy percent in a cross space, abasement or your house.
(09:45):
And if you do you're going to be subject to
having mold colonies, having mold spores in the air, folks
in the house, having allergies, and asthma. I mean, it's
all been proven and related. So having a healthy home
is about controlling those allergens and controlling the health of
(10:11):
the air in your home. I've said many times EPA
looks at our homes and say that air in your home,
for most homes, is three to five times worse than
the outdoor air. There's all kinds of things, and it's
not just mold, but I'm kind of focusing on that
to show you what water penetration coming in your home
(10:32):
actually causes. Happy to take your calls, It's eight hundred
eight two three eight two five five will continue at

We're gonna go back to the phones. We got John
and welcome. Hey Gary, how are you doing fine? Thank you.
Speaker 3 (13:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (13:44):
I had a lowered level cement patio poured with a
deck built above it, and somehow during construction, shortly after
the patio was poured, a small piece of metal dropped
from the deck onto the patio.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
I didn't notice it until a couple of months later
when the piece of metal started to rust. It's right
near the surface, but it's kind of it's I can't
just pull it out, no, And I'm just wondering if
you have any ideas about how to approach that.
Speaker 1 (14:20):
Well, you know, I can take care of the rust
stain on the concrete, but if we don't get that
metal out, you know, it's going to be forever coming.
That rust is going to penetrate that concrete all all
the time. Sometimes we even have the problem with rebar
rusting under concrete, believe it or not. If you can
(14:41):
get to the concrete, there is different chemicals that will
react with iron oxide rust and literally seal the iron
oxide into the concrete or into the metal, and it
will turn that metal black. So you know, usually it's
(15:02):
if you've got a railing and you're calling me and
you don't want to scrape it, and you don't want
to get all that rust off. You can just spray
this chemical one that creates the reaction and functions as
a primer. So if you took that and poured it
on the concrete and it soaked into the concrete and
onto that piece of metal, I don't know would that work.
(15:22):
It might. I don't know that it will though, I
don't know, so that that would be option one, you know,
if you want to try that. The other option is
that what you said, yeah, it'll turn the the rust
on the metal black. It won't really, you know, you'd
(15:44):
want to remove that rust on the concrete first, because
if it reacted with rusting concrete turned it black, that's
not even better than the than the rust of per se.
So so to get rid of rust on concrete, there's
a product. It's called iron out. Iron out is a liquid.
(16:07):
You could literally pull up a little step stool and
sit on it and just keep basting this iron out
over the surface of the rust and it will dissipate
it and it's not going to bleach out the concrete,
but it will remove that rust. No scrubbing, just basting
it on there, all right, So that gets rid of
(16:29):
the rust in the concrete. But if that metal is
in the concrete and continues the rust. The stain's gonna
come back. Yeah, so that's where I'm going, Like, jeez,
I don't know. To me, it seems like you got
two choices. You can cut or dig that piece of
metal out, or you can try and put this like
(16:51):
rust neutralizer. It comes in a liquid or a spray.
I would use the liquid and pour it onto the concrete.
It's gonna pull it down into the concrete. Whether it,
you know, hits the metal and creates that reaction, I
don't know. I really don't know if that's gonna work
or not. Realistically, it sounds like it could, but I
(17:13):
don't know.
Speaker 3 (17:14):
Yeah, and what's the name of that again?
Speaker 1 (17:17):
So it comes under a bunch of names. One of
them is called rust Neutralizer. Then there's one called rust reformer,
and you can google it and read about it. I've
used it before. I mean it functions, you know great,
and even got an old lamp post that's rusted or
flashing on a roof that's rusted, you can literally just
put it on, turns it black and no scraping, and
(17:40):
functions as a primary and you can paint over it.
But this is kind of a different beast.
Speaker 3 (17:46):
Yeah, yep, okay, all right, all right, I got some
thing to dry. Thank you.
Speaker 1 (17:51):
There you go, good enough, take care, Thanks, bye bye.
All right, coming up, we're gonna talk about it. We're
all outside working more right, I mean, trimming bushes, cutting grass.
We're ready to start to battle again with ticks and mosquitoes.
And Heather will be joining us. She is with some
chemical and we'll talk, you know, some of the different
(18:14):
products you can use to protect yourself from ticks and mosquitoes.
You know, a lot of people don't realize, even in
a well manicured lawn, if you got deer in the area,
they like to hitch rides and some of these tick
bites anymore, it's ferocious. So keeping yards and landscaping maintained
(18:38):
certainly helps. But we're going to get the kind of
the low down on how to you know, decrease the population,
how to keep that in check around your ard and
of course when you're out there doing a little work
in the yard, long pants, yeah, socks, yeah, keep that
(18:59):
in mind. Unlike me who's always out there with a
pair of gym shoes and short zone, kind of leave
yourself a little vulnerable. All right, So that's what we'll
do next, and then we'll take more calls. So if
you'd like to grab a line, go right ahead, and
we'll talk to you about your home projects as we
work our way through the weekend. You're at home with

our landscape, in our environment with pest insects, critters. And
joining me now is Heather Stickney. She is with Somem,
a chemical, and we're going to talk a little bit
about mosquitoes and ticks are a big, big problem. Hi, Heather,
how are you.
Speaker 5 (22:48):
I'm doing well, Gary, Good morning, Good morning.
Speaker 1 (22:51):
So jeez, I don't know where to start. I guess
today we have a lovely day. We're based out of Cincinnati, Ohio,
and you know, we've had some good days. We've had
a lot of rain though, and I know rain is
water contributes to a lot of our problems in our home.
(23:12):
It's you know, flooded basements and mold and everything. But
that's what insects thrive on too. And as a rainy
spring that we've had is that means more mosquitoes and
more ticks.
Speaker 5 (23:25):
It certainly, can you know, mosquitoes breed in standing water,
and so while it's still probably just a little bit
cool yet for them, ticks begin moving when weather or
when temperatures reach about forty five degrees and higher. So
they like low, shady, cool, moist areas. So you know,
(23:46):
where mosquitoes are not quite the problem that ticks are.
We'll certainly start to see that activity soon.
Speaker 1 (23:54):
Sure, well, let's kind of focus on ticks. I was
talking before we got in line with you. You know,
we're all out, you know, triming bushes, cutting grass, maulching.
We're all working outside now, maybe having a little fun outside,
taking some runs or playing golf. And tick problem has
(24:18):
really become a really big problem, and there's some diseases
attributed to ticks. Can you address some of the diseases
that you know ticks bring to us humans?
Speaker 5 (24:31):
Certainly, certainly, you know, lime disease I think probably comes
first to mind when you talk about disease that ticks
can spread, and that is spread primarily by the black
legged or the deer tick. So you know, lime disease
can cause symptoms including fever, rash, arthritis, facial paralysis, things
(24:51):
of that nature. Another disease that can be spread picks
as rocky mountain spotted fever. So that's often character character
terized by a rash, fever, stomach pain symptoms such as that.
There's a new disease out there, or relatively new, i
should say, called alpha gal syndrome. Yeah, that's bad primarily
(25:14):
by the lone startick. Yes, and that is something that
can render individuals allergic to that alpha gal sugar molecule
to It can render individuals allergic to red meat from
mammalian meat. So no beef, no pork, no lamb. Yeah,
(25:34):
it's probably not one that I would want to contract.
Speaker 1 (25:37):
Yeah, the larme disease. I've known people that have had that,
and that's not something that just goes away in a
week or two. I mean they can linger for a
long long time.
Speaker 5 (25:47):
It can. It can. Generally speaking, it's fairly treatable, but
there are individuals who you know suffer from symptoms for
quite a while.
Speaker 1 (25:57):
So where do we start. We can talk talk about
the camping and walking through the woods and all that,
but let's start at the house where you said there
were ticks are would you say, low to the ground,
moist areas? I mean, are they in suburbia and nice
(26:17):
lawns and landscaping? I mean, is everybody got to keep
their eyes open on this.
Speaker 5 (26:24):
I think that unfortunately you do. You know where you
would probably find them more commonly in wooded areas. You know,
if you've got leaf piles in ear lawn, brushy areas,
tall grass. Again, if it's moist and shady, you you
could find ticks in that area.
Speaker 1 (26:43):
Sure, so a good defense. And I'll say suburbia again,
is a is a well manicured landscaping? Right?
Speaker 5 (26:55):
That is correct? Yes, yes, keeping things trimmed and neat
will certainly help prevent problems with ticks.
Speaker 1 (27:02):
Now, when we head out to the woods for a hike,
where we go camping, a lot of that'll start going
on pretty you know, we're not going to have a
well manicured place if we're hiking in the woods, that's
for sure. And that's got to be a lot of
the ticks, you know, the different types that we talked
about that carry different diseases. You have something for us
(27:25):
to keep those away from us?
Speaker 5 (27:28):
Correct, Yes, yes, that is correct. So you know when
you're out hiking, you want to try to avoid tall
and grassy areas. If you're on a trail, stay close
to the center. That'll help prevent you from picking up ticks.
But you know, I think more importantly to keep in
mind a good defense is the best or a good
(27:49):
offense is the best defense. You know, you want to
wear long sleeve shirts and pants, keep your clothing light
and color. But you can also treat your clothes and
gear with a product called Green Armor Insect Repellant okay,
which is a permethron based spray that will help repel
and kill not only ticks, but also mosquitoes and other
(28:11):
biting insects.
Speaker 1 (28:14):
So this Green Armor, when we spray it on our pants,
legs or sleeping bag tents, I guess utilize that right
to protect yourself. How long does something like that last?
I know mosquito sprays last a few hours. Is this
a little longer or what's the longevity of that?
Speaker 5 (28:36):
This is a product that will last a little bit longer.
So the pomethron will bond to fabric fibers and it
will last up to six weeks to help repel and
kill those biting insects. And that's really even after washing.
So if you have a shirt, you know, you treat it,
allow it to dry, wear it, and then wash it.
Speaker 1 (28:57):
Mm hmm.
Speaker 5 (28:58):
That residual effect will last for up to six weeks
to help keep those pests away.
Speaker 1 (29:06):
So, so I'm sure everybody's thinking right now, Heather, and
you can help us with this. If you're spreading on
your pants and your shoes and everything. They're thinking, how
safe is this for me? And what happens if I
get it on my skin? Or can I should I
put it on my skin? Walk me through that.
Speaker 5 (29:26):
Sure, So it is not designed as a skin or
an exposed skin repellent. You really want something that's EPA approved,
like a beat for areas of exposed skin. Green Armor is, however,
EPA registered, which means that it's been evalueied evaluated by
the Environmental Protection Agency to be safe for use on
(29:50):
your clothing and gear without harming you or non target species.
So it is safe for use on your clothing and gear.
You don't want to apply it to exposed skin, Okay.
Speaker 1 (30:03):
So you would apply this to clothing really before maybe
even before you put it on, right, or your tent?
Speaker 5 (30:10):
That is correct? Yeah, that is correct.
Speaker 1 (30:13):
You want to.
Speaker 5 (30:14):
You really do want to treat the garment thoroughly, so
both inside and outside spray it. You apply the spray
at about six to eight inches away in a nice
sweeping motion, allow the garment to dry thoroughly so for
about two hours or so, and then then it's then
(30:35):
you're good to wear the garment.
Speaker 1 (30:37):
Okay. Now, is this an aerosol or is this kind
of like a trigger spray or how's the green arm
or sold?
Speaker 5 (30:44):
It's what they it's what they call it ready to use,
so it's pre mixed and no measuring required. It's similar
to other ready to use products that you might use
around the home. Just turn on the novel and it's
good to go.
Speaker 1 (30:57):
Well, trigger thing and a where you go? What size
is the bottle on that?
Speaker 5 (31:01):
It's available in a thirty two ounce size, Okay, so
it's really pretty economical. It will treat up to seven
outfits and will last up to six weeks, so a
really good value for the money.
Speaker 1 (31:15):
Well, it sounds like it's almost a must have, especially
if you're going to the woods and hiking or you're
camping out. It seems like that's that's got to be
on your list.
Speaker 5 (31:27):
And for sure, definitely something that I keep in my
in my you know, uh, in my arsenal. I guess
I would say when it comes to preventing tick bites,
or mosquito bites for that matter.
Speaker 1 (31:40):
Green Armor is the name of the product that we're
speaking of. Is that readily available in hardware stores, big
box stores, I.
Speaker 5 (31:48):
Would say, primarily in hardware stores, lawn and garden centers,
some select farm and fleet stores, and online of course.
Speaker 1 (31:58):
Of course, of course shift gears a little bit with me.
We also mentioned mosquitoes, maybe not active quite yet, may
be very active in some areas of the country. As
we talk to all kinds of folks, how do we
prevent that eliminate standing water?
Speaker 5 (32:16):
I'm sure getting rid of standing water is a big,
a big piece of that. However, sometimes you know, that's
not always easy to do in areas like gutters, tire tracks,
things that you might have in your yard that just
collect water. Readily. We make a product called mosquito dunks,
(32:37):
and that is it's sort of a disc shape. It
almost looks like a little beige. Don't you can pop
that bodies of standing water or areas that might collect water,
and the dunk contains a bacterium called BTI, which is
toxic only to mosquito larvae. So when females lay their
(32:58):
eggs in standing water, those eggs develop into larva. The
larva ingest that BTI. It essentially disrupts their ability to
feed and so they never develop into those biting adults.
Speaker 1 (33:10):
So if you have a bird bath, you could literally
put it in a bird bath. It's not going to
bother the birds.
Speaker 5 (33:16):
It's not going to bother the birds or any other
animal that might come up for a drink of water.
Speaker 1 (33:21):
So and then of course the other thing is walk
around your house. If you got garbage can lids upside
down and collecting water, put them back on top of
the garbage can clean the gutters, right right right. I'm
very familiar with the mosquito dunks and the mosquito bites,
and of course those are available same place as hardware
(33:42):
stores and garden centers, and folks take a look at that.
If you're one, if you're in nature a lot, you're

Welcome, Hi, Hello, I have Yeah, can you hear me?

I can?
Speaker 6 (38:21):
Can you hear me?
Speaker 1 (38:22):
Yes?
Speaker 6 (38:22):
Okay, I have a ten year old stainless steel thing
which I've never seen with anything else but baking soda,
and I have a small rough spot and I think
and I think it needs to be I need to
service it. I was wondering what you suggest.
Speaker 1 (38:41):
Probably I would take a look at bar keeper's friend. Uh,
I think that would be a good good thing. It's
very very good on stainless steel, and you probably got
a you know, a composition of some nickel in there
that's causing us little They're just a little tiny pinhead things, right,
(39:02):
I mean you can see them.
Speaker 6 (39:08):
And it's gonna looks like what.
Speaker 1 (39:10):
Yeah, yeah, do you have any barkeeper's friend at the house?
Speaker 6 (39:16):
No, No, I know what it is.
Speaker 1 (39:18):
Okay, Yeah, I'd try that. I was gonna say, if
that didn't work, maybe something with a little bit more
grit might do a pretty good job for you. Also,
it would kind of be something that would have to
be purchased online. You heard me talk earlier today about
Jaws J A. W. S. They make different cleaners. They
(39:41):
make a cream cleanser that I would certainly give a
try to. It's a relatively new product. It's got a
little bit of grit to it. It's good on stainless steel.
I think that would you know, if the Barkeeper's Friend
didn't work, I'd use that first. It's gonna be a
lot more before you if that didn't work, take a
(40:02):
look at the Jaws cream cleanser.
Speaker 6 (40:07):
Okay, thank you. So you don't think I need to
treat the.
Speaker 1 (40:10):
Whole thing well when you start, like when you're doing
the when you're doing either one of those products, say
the Barkeeper's Friend, which comes in a liquid or a powder,
I would I would clean the whole sink with it.
I would focus on the pinheads first. Uh. But yeah,
(40:32):
I would certainly use the product consistently throughout the whole
sink area.
Speaker 6 (40:37):
Yes, okay, well, thank you very much.
Speaker 1 (40:40):
All right, you're quite welcome. Thank you, Bye bye. It's
like rust day today and and cleaning day and uh
it's a rusty Sunday on the Gary Solomon Trusty Sunday.
There you go, a rusty easter tall. All right, let
me give you the phone number. You can grab a
line Danny Boy's board. So it's eight hundred eight two
(41:02):
three a two five feet board. Be talking to you
during the breaks. I know that's probably why. All right,
so let me give you that phone number again. It's
eight hundred eight two three eight two five five things
to do. I made a list before the weekend started,
and one of the things I had and you'll start
seeing this if you haven't started seeing it in your
(41:24):
area yet, you will certainly certainly start seeing probably in
the next two weeks. And that is where you have
expansion joints on a concrete driveway. A lot of times
they're designed to crack. Okay, that's the little lines that
go across between the slabs and separate slabs of concrete.
They they, being the installer of that concrete driveway, create
(41:49):
the weakest link, so you have a slab you cut
a Sometimes they're port separately and they have a little
divider in there. Sometimes they're just notched where if it cracks,
it cracks in that expansion joint, and they usually do
because the soil is always in a state of movement
(42:10):
and when it does you still got the rain, you
still got soil under there, and sure enough you will
start having little piles of sand where ants are tunneling,
or you'll have some vegetation growing in there and it
becomes slightly and you can seal those. Not with concrete,
(42:33):
but you can seal those to minimize erosion from water
getting down underneath there and potentially causing a bigger problem,
or just to clean it up and not have to
mess with the ants tunneling or weeds growing up through it.
Go ahead, use your weed killer, kill the weeds. Maybe
(42:55):
get out a shop back and just clean those expansion joints.
And depending on the size of the crack, if it's
under a quarter of an inch, you can get a
little product comes in a coret jug called crack seal
and you can literally just pour it into that crack
and it'll seal it up. It might be something that
you have to do every couple of years, or if
(43:16):
it's wider and there gets to be some separation more
than a quarter of an inch, there is a self
leveling euro thane crack sealant or an advanced resin latex
crack sealant. That's the one that's a little bit easier
to use versus the eure Thinge. They're both self leveling,
(43:36):
they're both going to last longer than the thin crack sealer.
They're very flexible, and they come into calking tube and
you will calk aft, you clean it, you will calk
over that surface. It'll weep into the crevice and it'll
self level and again that's a great way to seal
(43:58):
those up and eliminate the agitation growth and the ants
tunneling and high deck crack. All right, her phone number
