Speaker 1 (00:01):
Tallica on the show. It's Rock one O five to three.
Today is a free comedy Friday, and we are so
excited to have our next guest back in studio, back
in San Diego. Michael Rappaport is back, ladies and gentlemen.
He's gonna be performing at the American Comedy Company a
couple shows tonight, couple shows tomorrow night.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Michael, Welcome back, buddy, Thanks for having me.

Speaker 3 (00:24):
Thanks knowing man, I'm excited to be here with you, guys.
I had a great show last night, and I gotta
tell you, every single time I'm in San Diego, I
always feel welcomed. I always, I just have a great
time every single time I get here.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
Now, is there a town that you go to that
you don't feel welcome? Like do you go to Boise
and they're like, but.

Speaker 3 (00:47):
I've been here a few times. I think it's like
my third time performing in San Diego, and I just
I don't know, it's just every single time, I'm just like,
I love performing in American comedy and I just it's
just I feel very warm, like.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
Them, so excited. You're in the right spot, yeah for sure.

Speaker 1 (01:06):
Now, after your last show on Saturday, Are you headed
right back home to watch Super Bowl or what's your
plan for.

Speaker 3 (01:12):
My plan is, I have a very early morning flight
Sunday morning. I'll get there a few hours before the game. Decompress,
stuff my face, gotta do it, gotta do it. Stuff
on my face with chips, dipak, the whole thing, you know,
all sorts of accouterments, maybe a sword in meat, and
then I'll sit down like the rest of the world

(01:33):
and watch the game. I don't have a listen. I'm
a New York Giants fan. I also am a store.
Yeah Giants.

Speaker 2 (01:40):
Wow, you're literally saying this is the.

Speaker 3 (01:43):
Worst season I've ever seen in Giants history.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
I'm terrible.

Speaker 3 (01:45):
I can't think it's starting with the fan are Jets
and the Giants.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
It's it's been terrible misery. It's the worst. Man.

Speaker 3 (01:52):
It started with the atrocious uniforms they wore for that
first game, and it's only gotten worse. And they didn't
fire anybody. No, Eli, I didn't get in last night.
I can't look at it. He's like himself, right, They didn't.
They didn't put in Eli Manning. They didn't put in Eli.
But they put in Eric Allen. Yeah, and and and

(02:12):
and Bill Belichick showed Bill Belichick. I didn't know his
record was seventy two and twenty four.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
I didn't see that. Did you see? He was wearing
five rings and she had one ring on.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
I look at him in a whole different ways, respect like,
do your thing, man. The fact he's coaching at college
now is crazy to me.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
Wild and.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
North Carolina crazy. It's crazy. The whole thing is crazy.
But it's like now, like when he tries to do
his curmudgety, old man, like, you don't talk like that
to her. We know, we know your bill, your your
bedside matter definitely a lot better than you present yourself.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
You were putting off exactly.

Speaker 3 (02:59):
But I also I just want to make sure that
it's clear that the San Diego Chargers should not be
in Los Angeles.

Speaker 2 (03:05):
Thank you for saying period, Thank you for saying that
I accept them in LA.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
It's it's it's really, it's it's disgusting that you guys
don't have a football team, the iconic San Diego Chargers
and all those years they should be here in San Diego.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
Couldn't agree more, Michael. You know we're screaming from the rooftops,
but sucks. It's the way it goes, you know, it stinks. Yeah,
But you know when we look at the Super Bowl,
do you have a dog in the fight? You were saying,
you're you're a Giants from Giant.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
Eagle.

Speaker 3 (03:35):
I don't hate on Saquan. I'm glad that he did
his thing. There's no way he would have done any
of this as a Giant.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
That's what I always thin.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
And I can't stand the tweets anymore.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
Man all season.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
The John Marrow tweet of him with his head in
his hands, saying he can't sleep, like he wouldn't have
done this with the Giants offensive.

Speaker 2 (03:52):
Not so good for him.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
It's a it's a rock and a and a and
I'm a homeboy place because I can't stand the Eagles deeply,
but also like I also want to see, you know,
the Crown get knocked off Travis Kels, Patrick Mahomes and
Taylor Swift And really so I've come to terms with
what I'm what I'm rooting for is I want to

(04:16):
see if Taylor Swift really will stand by her man
through thick and thin. And I want to see her crying.
I want to see her crying, and I want to
see if you know, because she's she's got the best
of the best. I want to see if her mascara
will run. I want to see Taylor Swift and the Swifties.

(04:36):
So I'm gonna sort of I'm hedging for the Eagle.
You're just for that because because because aside from yeah,
I I I don't. Yeah, I can't root for the
Chiefs and yeah, but I think it. I think for
whether you're a football fan or not, it's going to
be a good game. Her game itself will be good. Yeah,

(04:57):
they earned it. It ain't easy to get there as
as a proven each year unless you're the Chiefs.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
They just know them.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
But but you know, the super Bowl, it's so it's
such an American it's like a holiday. So we get
to stuff our faces. Kendrick Lamar, it's gonna be great.
So you're a big hip hop fan.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
I know that.

Speaker 3 (05:12):
I'm a massive Countric fan. H Do you think he'll
perform not like us, because there's a lot of backlash
with the call and Drake a pedophile, might change he
might change the lyrics. Yes, I can't change it. Yeah,
but it's gonna be good. You know, as far as
like hip hop, like he's by far the most hip
hop hip hop act that's performed, like Dre and Snoop

(05:34):
and Eminem they became these iconic pop stars, Like I
know that there's a lot of people in America that
probably don't know his song. Yeah, and I don't know
if there's ever been a super Bowl like that. So,
but I think it's gonna be fun. I'm a fan,
and uh that's.

Speaker 1 (05:50):
Where I'm at because I'm I'm a rock guy. Yes,
I obviously I'm aware of Kendrick Lamar, but I don't
know his music like Thorne has. Yeah, and so I'm
fascinated to see what the show is going to be.

Speaker 2 (05:59):
It'll be good. He you know, he performed a little
bit with Drake.

Speaker 3 (06:03):
On a good show and you know, and and and
as far as representing hip hop, he's very positive, like
he's very thoughtful with what he says, like, you know,
he's he's a very good represented representation of hip hop
in twenty twenty five. Uh uh, you know, from from
what he does. So I think it's gonna be a
dope day. I think it's gonna be It's a celebration.

(06:24):
It's a celebration, Yes, exactly, I'm gonna be stuffing my face.
I'm wondering, should when I'm on the plane ride back
after my four fantastic shows America to Tonight to tomorrow,
should I start stuffing my face on the plane?

Speaker 2 (06:41):
No, Sat, you don't want.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
The stomach. Yeah, okay, all right, you get a jersey.
Mike's at the airport eating on the plane, and then.

Speaker 3 (06:51):
Now we're we're spitball again. We're spin okay, and the
airport is so San Diego. Like you get tacos whatever,
it's chill at that airport. That's I'm not I'm not kissing,
but like when I got off.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
The plane, I'm like, this is so San Diego airport.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
Like you go to other cities like Miami, it's like
Chaos airport. JFK, chaos. Just you get off boom, you're outside,
you get that fresh good and you're in San Diego.
They have a jersey mics at the airport. Oh yeah,
we might start early. Good, don't do it. I'm not
mad at this, but the reason why is because you know,

(07:31):
you get on the flight early and then you know
the time difference. I'm I'm just saying, like I'm going
to be watching you know, watching the pregame on the plane.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
Yeah, a lot.

Speaker 3 (07:39):
And you're going back to New York right, Oh, yes,
that's a five hours got to eat.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
Yeah, like I have regret about it. You want to
you want to be miserable by the end of the game. Yeah,
I agree.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
Michael Rappaport, Your career is so fascinating because you span
so much stuff. I mean, honestly, I know it's crazy
with just your acting alone. We could talk about for I.

Speaker 3 (08:05):
Was watching you on Friends the other night, Dude, my wife, Well,
one of my favorite movies of all time is True Romance.
I've never talked to you about True Romance and that,
like that movie alone, like your part in it, what
it became, what it was, the fact that Tarantino wrote it,
all this stuff, like what was your experience on that? Man,
I was so excited to audition for that. This was

(08:26):
a time where there was no email. I'm pretty sure
email didn't exist. So the script was getting passed around
and Quentin Tarantino was just coming off reservoir dogs and
natural bune killers and it's like, oh, it's another thing. Yeah,
and you know you'd read it and then your actor
friends would be like, Yo, did you read it? And like, yo,
I'm auditioning. I heard that Christian Slater got part is cast.

(08:47):
Oh wow, okay. And I heard that Christopher Walking is
cass Is the mob got yo, what what are we
talking about? And then I would audition or audition or audition,
and then I finally got the part of Dick Ritchie
in the film. And I was just excited as the
character was to get cast in TJ.

Speaker 2 (09:04):
Hooker like I was.

Speaker 3 (09:07):
I was such a fan of the actors in the
film and the script and Tony Scott. And I remember,
I can tell you one thing. I remember going into
the casting and they had the the pictures on the
wall of who was in it. I remember distinctly, and
my last audition with the late great Tony Scott. They
had Christopher walk and they had Val Kilmore's picture, they

(09:28):
had Peter, they had garyol They were all behind me
and I'm like this. I just remember looking like yo.
And I told Tony Scott, I said, do not let
me leave until I get this right. Like I just
I knew I was going to get it. It meant
that I was so and then when I got it
in the experience and then this one actor in it.
I thought he was going to have a good career.

(09:48):
Brad heard of him because he was a good looking kid,
and I thought he I saw, like, yo, this guy
has a big feature.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
I don't know really when you turned.

Speaker 3 (09:57):
Out, but the whole, the whole experience James GANDELFIENI was
his first film, and he was terrified to be in
the movie. He was so nervous, but nervous. He was
very very you know, soft spoken and nervous. And you
know we remain friends and like all that stuff was special.

(10:19):
I didn't take any of it for granted. I had
a polar rudd. I shot pictures on the film. I
wish I shot more, but you know it's like now
we shoot pictures of everything. But like going into that experience,
it's I remember the whole thing, and every single day
was exciting. So I had a ball making true It's
and it's an honor that people still.

Speaker 2 (10:41):
Talk about one of my favorite movies of all time.

Speaker 3 (10:43):
You know, one thing I could tell you is you
never know what's going to resonate with people or not,
and you go into everything hoping, uh you know that
it'll be something and something stink somethings don't think. But
you know, I still go into every project and every opportunity,
you know, swing for the fences and for the bet
all the time.

Speaker 2 (11:03):
You must.

Speaker 1 (11:04):
Are you ever in something that doesn't hit the you
go that was gonna be a no brainer?

Speaker 2 (11:08):
Like what happened?

Speaker 3 (11:10):
Tons of things? Yeah, things happened, done right. You don't
can't control it's not clicking, it's not working. You know,
as an actor, you know you're not in control of everything.

Speaker 2 (11:22):
The editing. Editing is so much. You know, you never
know the vibe.

Speaker 3 (11:26):
And but but, but I will tell you there have
been some projects I wouldn't name that I knew immediately
this isn't gonna be what you.

Speaker 2 (11:34):
Talked about three weeks ago.

Speaker 3 (11:36):
I can see that we're meeting and greeting and dinner
like this is gonna be great.

Speaker 2 (11:41):
And then you get there and you're like, the vibe,
it's a vibe. What happens? It's crazy.

Speaker 3 (11:46):
Eddie got me into the show Fallout and I love it. It's
one of my favorite shows in the last ten years.
And then I all of a sudden, you're in Fallout
when they take your mask, that was cool. I was
crazy Walton Goggins, who I met when we did Just
the Five, who's one of the best. He's so good
and he's such a good actor and such a good
dude and such a one of one actor. And I

(12:08):
worked with him on Justified, and him and Timothy Oliphant,
like those guys welcomed me and every other cast member
in such a ingratiating, cool, respectful way. And I think
it was the fourth or fifth year of the show.
And you know, they were like, yo, throw down like
they they and that's not normally the way you could

(12:30):
be welcome, like they were, like do your thing?

Speaker 2 (12:33):
Want to they want? They wanted me, but they wanted they.

Speaker 3 (12:35):
Wanted, and they gave gave me the ball and you
shoot and and and I'll never ever forget uh that
and not appreciate that because they made me feel so
welcome on their show. And both of them are just
badass actors. I mean both are sick.

Speaker 1 (12:51):
Honestly, Michael, you could go on stage and just tell
stories from your career and I would be fascinated your show.
I'm sure you're gonna you know, you know what a
Michael Rappaport comedy show is, Like I gotta go see you.

Speaker 3 (13:05):
Man and come man to tonight Friday and to tomorrow
at the American Comedy Coming. You know, they're they're they're
like this, you know, like I talk, I you know,
I riff, I have fun.

Speaker 2 (13:15):
And you know, I went.

Speaker 1 (13:16):
Viral recently because the right side embraced you and saying, oh,
he's waking up.

Speaker 2 (13:25):
You were talking about wait, what is happening here?

Speaker 1 (13:29):
And what and like and they were like the whole
right way, we got him.

Speaker 2 (13:32):
He's hilarious.

Speaker 3 (13:35):
And then I'm like, yo, I'm not anybody that thinks
we give so should be like we got him. I'm like,
you got nothing, you exactly. I'm on the rappaport, like
pills it on something. But you know, it's a crazy time.

(13:55):
It is a crazy time. It is a crazy, crazy,
crazy time. And you know, I like to just ebb
and flow. And you know, I think growth and learning
is of the utmost important personally, you know, uh and uh,
I'm not afraid to articulate, and I'm not afraid to,
you know, say when my feelings have changed, when I

(14:15):
was right about this, we're wrong about that, especially somebody
that talks as much trash as I.

Speaker 2 (14:19):
Absolutely you ain't gonna be right all the time.

Speaker 3 (14:22):
Yeah, but also you know, it's you know, it's also
very very important for me to, uh, to grow. I
don't want to be the same person I was yesterday.
I want to be the same person I was for
ten years ago.

Speaker 2 (14:34):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (14:34):
I certainly don't want to be like, Yo, you change.
I'm like, yeah, I ain't hurt you. You're no more,
you know, I want I want to change. I have
to change and I and it's appreciate that. Yeah, you
have to.

Speaker 1 (14:43):
You have to go see Michael rappport Back Comedy Company.
A couple of shows tonight, a couple of shows tomorrow night.
Great catching up with you, Michael. I appreciate you. Guys.
We were just talking about watching the Super Bowl. A
lot of people watch for different reasons. Some people watch
for the game, some for the halftime show, some for
the commercials. We're gonna see what people say they like
most about the broadcast when we get back on the
show at Rocot five three
