The school notified the mother's mother about the rape, but

What made you want to go? And so we do
a part of nine and We've been doing it for
fifteen years.

I've been walking past this, so for fifteen years, I've
had members that we got off the bus there and
get chased, get robbed. You see people get gunned down.
And the hours like ten eleven in the morning to
two or three o'clock in the morning. It's just horrible.
So I kept walking praying, like, God give me this corner.
And the last kid that got killed there, his mom
goes to my church. Wow. So she came to me

one Sunday just crying. I was like, we got to
get this out to do something. Yeah, and the city
shut it down. So we went in and paid cash
and we got it.
Speaker 1 (34:59):
I know that's right, But let's talk about that wasn't
an easy thing to do because you've been trying to
do this for a while. Talk about some of your
roadblocks and red tape you had to fight through to
get to that point.
Speaker 2 (35:09):
You got to fight through because number one, you are
a hindrance to them. So I'm grateful that someone else
had to go in they got it, and then we
end up getting it from them because if I go
in and get it, they're not gonna give it to me. Yes,
but I'm grateful that we got it. But I said
we got it. We got the building, We have all
the storefronts around it. It's office space upstairs. And when

I walked through it, I'm like, Okay, God, what are
we supposed to do with this?
Speaker 1 (35:35):
That's what I'm saying. What's next with it? What are
you a man do? So we're gonna put a grocery
store what the liquor store was.
Speaker 2 (35:40):
I'm calling this out the corner of life because so
many have lost their lives on the corner and we
come to bring life a grocery store because we don't
want this to be a food desert.
Speaker 1 (35:50):
Right vegetables, fruit, the right meats. We got to eat
right to live right and live long, healthy lives.
Speaker 2 (35:56):
Upstairs Doctor's office, Dennis Office, Counselors. Black businesses. I go
right now, turn seventy ninth Street into the Chicago Black
Wall Street.
Speaker 1 (36:05):
Come on. So I'm begging all black businesses, come on,
let's get over here. And that's what I want to
ask you do you have since this has happened. How
is the support being from the black business owners, black
construction guys, black people that have everybody's calling Can I help?

But they want to be paid. Listen here, ain't nobody
doing nothing for free. Ain't nothing free with salvation and
they caught your life. Yeah, but it want that change.
You know what I'm saying to you, nobody listen, but
we get done help for you with they check it,
come on. So but what my goal is if I
can now saying, let's bring businesses over here? This is

remember when Chatham used to be it, And.

That's a vibrant corner like far as just traffic going
back and forth. It's a vibrant corner, a major bus stop.
You know all corners, four corners be lit. So to
change that one could affect the whole and and bleed
it over into the other corners.

Some statistics recently inner City the average age of a
black man is in the sixties.
Speaker 1 (37:08):
You go downtown to the Gold Coast nineties. Yep. So
what is it?
Speaker 2 (37:12):
What are we eating, what are we drinking? What kind
of environment do we have that's taking our lives? I
am sick of having to go downtown or go north
to see quality. I believe that our kids should able
to walk out the door and see first class. If
you come to our church, clean, spotless. That is all
intentional to make sure that we see quality. I'm born

and raise in Chicago, and whenever we had to go
to the suburbs, no we're not going that far. No more,
come right over here in our hood.

Do you think this is a model that can be
duplicated by other churches in other neighborhoods and other communities.

It really can be.

But I just say if a preparation plus opportunity equal success, oh,
now you have to be prepared. So when the opportunity
to come for you to get easy, but you got
to be prepared. I am grateful that our church was
able to get this and pay cash for there's no mortgage,
and that is because we're prepared to occupy the land,
so when the opportunity came, we were able to lock

it down. I'm just saying everybody, you have to think
outside of the four walls of your building. If you
don't go any further than the four walls of your building,
then you're limited he comes to enlarge our territory. I
just I love Chicago. I'm never leaving Chicago, but I
want to be safe in our community. I want to
live and I want to sit outside. I want to
drink coffee. I want to have a good time in

our community without the foolishness.

You're trying to tell the community back down. You say
down here and go to that to get into you know,
show your card, man credits. So we have another contract.
We have another contract on another building on seventy nine,
so we have a food pantry. I don't want these
people to feel like they're less than in this food pantry.

So I'm fix this building up so when they come
to get their food, they literally feel like they're going
grocery shop.
Speaker 4 (39:52):
When is it you're sec want to I want to
do it. I want to wear like a grocery store,
set up the food to do it. When it's gonna
give me some money? How much you need?
Speaker 1 (40:00):
Brother, So we gotta set the food pantry up. What
am I trying to save? Guys?
Speaker 2 (40:07):
We keep waiting on somebody to come and save us. Yep,
there is no such thing as the great White hope.
We are our only hope. God has to give us
strength and the resources we need to save ourselves.
Speaker 1 (40:18):
So let me ask you. So when we do prayer
on the nine, I know it's not gonna stop. No.
Speaker 4 (40:22):
So when you're doing prayer on the nine in May
and you're walking down seventy nine, it's the meetup gonna
be at the you know, celeb like you said you

you're gonna have to save some money. If you're going
