Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to another episode. I tell you what it was
there and then it was gone. What. Oh yeah, I
didn't know a lake can do that.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
I didn't either. I didn't either. Okay, So for anybody
who hasn't seen this, there's Lake Alice and William O'Brien
State Park, so it's kind of north east of the
Twin Cities area, and apparently it drained completely over the
weekend and there's just no lake there anymore.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
It's can you imagine living on this lake? Or well,
it's a state park, so you're not living, but just
say you're living out a lake or you're camping down
a lake and you wake up in the morning. It's
the opposite of a flash flood. It's like that, all
of a sudden, the body of water that was so
peaceful and wonderful is pretty much gone when you get up.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
There were people who swam in that lake on Saturday morning,
and by Saturday night it was drained gone. It happened that.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
Quickly, like a bathtub pretty much.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
If yes, Apparently the rain that we've gotten recently made
the lake levels rise a lot, So the DNR staff
opened a valve to release water because there's a dam there,
I think, or something you can do that.

Speaker 1 (01:13):
I guess you lake. Someone's got fired lake and it's
got to go somewhere.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
Yeah, it goes down a river, right think, Yeah, and
another lake.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
Then there's there's what I'm saying, there's's gotta be some
small body of water down the road, a little way
with a turn in the river or something where people
are waking up, going hey front, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
It's property value up.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
Huh.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
It's just weird, it's not It wasn't a super super
deep lake.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
I think there was deep.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
Yeah, so it wasn't super deep. But they opened this
valve to try to release some water to prevent the
lake from overflowing, and so it says instead the DNR
intended they intended to close the valve on Saturday morning,
but apparently it was stuck open because of a mechanical issue.
So I don't know, I left it. Somebody forgot or
somebody forgot yeah, and so it completely drained the lake

(02:07):
and now there's just like a tiny little trickling stream
in the middle of where it was. And unfortunately, I
mean they there were a lot of fish there.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
Yeah they're gone. Ye, it's a fish kill. Yeah, yeah,
it's really sad.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
They had bluegill bass Northern Walleye and the lake is
drained now so there's nothing there. And unfortunately, by like Saturday,
I mean Saturday night and Sunday morning, the whole area
stinks already of fish.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
Yeah there there, I forget about that.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
I know, but I mean I guess the eagles and
hawks and raccoons. Yeah, I mean they're gonna eat really
really well, so at least there's that. But just insane.
Some of the photos are really really odd to me
to look at because I mean, you're looking at the
bottom of a lake and it looks like a lot
of greenery because obviously you have seaweed that normally is

(03:00):
standing straight up and now it's just flat on the ground.
So it just looks like, I.

Speaker 1 (03:03):
Don't kill that.

Speaker 2 (03:05):
Yeah, I mean, that whole area is just gonna be
so stinky.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
But it'll fill up, craick, won't it. Didn't They say
it'll fill up pretty fast.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
I would think so. But but still, I mean, that
lake's gonna be so gross.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
Somebody screwed up, well, wouldn't it. Actually, Well, it's an OCB, right,
it's an old country buffet for the wildlife. I mean,
they're gonna come in. They're gonna they're gonna come in.
They're gonna clean that joint up. Hopefully we can eat
all that food and they're gonna get and then whatever.
When the lake fails back up, and it's on a river,
so you'd think they just some of it will go
back downstream again.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
I hope. So, I mean you got to figure that
there's gonna be thousands of fish there.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
So I don't think the lake, well, thousands of fish
you have. I don't think the lake was that big. No,
I don't think it's like it was a smaller lake.
It was under fifty acres, wasn't it.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
I mean a twenty six acre lake that's not super small.

Speaker 1 (03:50):
It's a big pond.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
Yeah, I mean it's not. It's not huge. It's a
small lake for sure.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
Drive a boat on that, you don't think So, I
don't think so not on twenty six acres. Probably not.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
You'll canoe or kayak.

Speaker 1 (04:01):
Absolutely. Is there somebody still in the canoe sitting there?
What am I going? Still a fishing? Paul Rock?

Speaker 2 (04:12):
Yeah, And he said they said that the lake swimming
beach is closed, And I'm like, du the swimming beach.

Speaker 1 (04:20):
The swimming beach is like acres away from the water.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
Now yeah, yeah, I mean well and there's just a
tiny little stream left.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
Well, this happened. I don't know if it was from
any type of relief valve or something. But white Bear
Lake twelve years ago, really fourteen years ago, I don't
remember that. Yeah, white Bear Lake had an issue. It
was like some kind of an aquifer issue and it
I mean people's docks were hundreds of feet away from
the water. Wow. It did not happen overnight though, it's

(04:50):
like all the time. But I think they got obviously,
I think they got that fixed. Either that or everybody
moved their houses closer. I don't know.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
Weird, I didn't know that.

Speaker 1 (04:59):
Yeah, it was look up white Bear Lake and you
all look that up. It didn't dry out, but I
mean a lot of it did, but not the whole lake.
It's a big white bears a Whitebear Lake's a big lake.
But there's an issue with white Bear Lake. It's probably
in two thousand and eight, two thousand and nine, maybe
let's somewhere in there.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
Yeah, I'm trying to find what it.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
Lives on White Bear Lake. You can let me know.
But yeah, some people were like, wow, I could put
a football field in my backyard right now, but the
lake was yeah, and then you know, that's kind of
cool as long as it doesn't stay that way, you know.
And then there's some people like, whoa, I bought lakefront
property and the lake is way over there.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
So it says in two thousand and eight, White Bear
Lake was not drained, but it did experience a significant
drop in water levels, which sparked concern and led to
a lawsuit. The lakes water levels and fluctuated naturally throughout
its history, with the sustained drop of over five feet
since two thousand and three, including a coupled with increased
water usage, changing climate blah blah blah blah blah blah.

(05:56):
So it was an issue.

Speaker 1 (05:58):
Then some people on part of that lake were way
away from the lake. It was crazy, so weird.

Speaker 2 (06:04):
That's so wild. I just didn't really realize this is
something that people would need to worry about.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
I didn't. I didn't either. I didn't think that, well,
like this is different lake, Alice. Yeah, when you go
to bed and it's there and it was gone, it's
gone this morning, or you know, it's gone by you know,
you're there, like you said, out there in the morning,
playing around. Yeah, and then all of a sudden it's
gone by night or whatever.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
I didn't even realize that it could drain that fast
because you think about how long. I feel like it
takes forever to drain a pool.

Speaker 1 (06:33):
I guess I'd get my dad's old hot job. It
takes forever if you just pop it, if I don't
put a sum pump in it.

Speaker 2 (06:38):
Yeah, but I guess that this is going super super fast.
And the people that were kayaking on it or something
on Saturday early in the day on Saturday, and they
said that they felt like a heavy pole towards one
side of the lake, but they couldn't they didn't know
what it was like, Well, you were probably being sucked
towards whatever drain.

Speaker 1 (06:55):
They're only paddling on one set, like like their lakes
on TV.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
Right now.

Speaker 1 (06:59):
That's great, No, the o. They're only paneling on one
side of the canoe. It is like, what is going on?

Speaker 2 (07:04):
That's a workout?

Speaker 1 (07:05):
You keep going that way? What's up?

Speaker 2 (07:08):
It must have been just gushing so fast, because imagine
to drain a lake.

Speaker 1 (07:12):
I get it.

Speaker 2 (07:13):
It's a small lake twenty six acres nine feet deep.
But that's a lot of water. I think about how
many gallons has to drain every minute for it to
completely drain the lake.

Speaker 1 (07:23):
In a day. Somebody's in trouble. I think I'm with Dubs.
I think Dubs and I both we gave each other
the side. It's like, I think somebody just forgot to
go back. There's probably some intern. So it's always an intern.
And if it's not blame, you know whoever's above that intern. Yeah,
it's probably like eight hours is up. I'm out. Yeah,
Just imagine if you turn the wheel.

Speaker 2 (07:41):
Just imagine you got a bunch of little kids and
they're so excited and it's the beach days. You're like,
oh my gosh, I gotta get my toddlers of the lake,
and you like go through an hour of getting them
all suited up and packed up, and then you drive
to the lake and then you get there and there's
no lake.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
Nothing.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
Now just have a carful of crying has answered prayer.

Speaker 1 (07:58):
It would be a lot easier to watch. All right, kids,
you can put your floaties away. Yeah, there's no leg Well, guys,
