Speaker 1 (00:00):
I'm Jeff Stevens. It's my eighties show podcast. You know
his voice from the legendary band. Yes, he's now got
a new thing going on too, he's releasing new music.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
He's awesome. He's John Anderson.
Speaker 3 (00:11):
How you doing, buddy, Jeff Stevens, How you doing? I'm
doing it?
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Excellent, excellent. I tell you what.
Speaker 1 (00:17):
I have been cranking shine on pretty much for the
last two hours getting ready to talk to you. What
a fantastic song.
Speaker 3 (00:24):
Yeah, it's a lot of fun, that's for sure. We
actually recorded it and we do last tour we did
just finished a couple of weeks ago. We actually played
it alive and it sounded amazing too.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Oh good, I bet so.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
Everybody's excited because John Anderson and the Band Geeks is out.
It's out now on Amazon and everywhere you get your
digital music. Obviously you've been playing some shows as well.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
John.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
How does it feel, after this amazing, storied career to
still be making excellent not just okay, excellent music and
still touring.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
I think when I met the band Geeks, they were like, yes, maam,
it's for a long pain and somebody video of them
performing hard at the Sunrise which is al song. Yeah,
and before I knew it, I'm in the band, let's
go on tour and said, yeah, let's tour. We can
do this. Let's too close to the eyes. Yeah, let's
(01:18):
do Awaken. Yeah, let's do Case of Delirium.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
Okay, you know what I bet. I'm going to say
this with all confidence. You had no trouble making that band.
I'm sure true.
Speaker 3 (01:31):
It's a miracle in so many ways.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
Well, I tell you, you guys sound amazing and you
could tell. I mean, obviously, John, you've been doing this
for a few years. You could tell you. I mean
you look in just watching the video and watching some
of the different clips, you look like you're having a
great time.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
Still gone right?
Speaker 2 (01:49):
Yeah? Or why would you do it right?
Speaker 3 (01:52):
And never?
Speaker 1 (01:55):
Well, John Anderson and the band Geeks it's out. I
highly recommend you you check it out because John, one
of the questions I want to ask you for sure
is how is your voice? Because people we've seen so
many artists have a really difficult time with their voice.
They've had to call it quits, They've had to have
vocal surgeries. I mean, how are you, how are you
(02:18):
still putting out such great vocals?
Speaker 2 (02:21):
And how have you taken care of your voice?
Speaker 3 (02:23):
I'm just happy all day long, that's all there is. True.
I'm very hot. I've got a beautiful wife and a
lovely life and all the goods. And then I go
out to sing in my head. I go to my studio,
I have a little cottage in the property here and
just have fun.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
Well that's good because there's a lot of people that
had maybe a little bit too much fun and are
not able to do it anymore, and that's always sad.
But man, when I first again, everybody's got to check
out the shine on song, your vocals and the vocals
of the band, and the power that just immediately comes
out of there. It takes you right back, of course,
to all the yes years. But you've also did I see,
(03:00):
you've seen You've had like fifteen solo albums, right.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
Yeah, true, you never stopped when You've got the feel
of my life over the past thirty years since I
met my wife. We're having the best time of life
and I just love making music, very very blessed.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
Did was this with the band geeks? Was this kind
of a collaborative writing effort with all of you?
Speaker 3 (03:23):
Yeah, you know, we would zoom each other every Tuesday
and talk about next step of the music or the song.
Richie with an idea, and then Chris the keyboard player
would come up with an id and put them more,
stick them all together with some super.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
Glue super glue. So now we know that, now we
know the secret super glue.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
Well, John, You've got such an amazing story career, and
I would imagine all the Yes fans are going to
and the fans that have followed your solo projects for
all these years are going to be very happy to
hear this. You said you've done some touring. Will there
be more touring this fall or in twenty twenty five
next spring?
Speaker 2 (04:05):
Good? So in the spring, is this back here in
the States.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
Yeah, we'll do some shows doing the Yes classics and
the songs from True and see how it goes, and
then go to Europe.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
Oh that is fantastic.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
And on summertime of course.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
Sorry, no, that's awesome.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
That's what we want to hear is getting to see
you out there. I'll never forget. Of course. I was
first introduced to you with Owner of a Lonely Heart,
and then you know, went back and listened to you know,
I was like, okay, this is not their first album
clearly nine O one, two five, and then and then
just became a fan, and then you had such great songs,
(04:42):
you know, in the years after that. But the one
that I will put this on my like if I'm
if I'm out mowing the yard or taking a nice
long walk on a beautiful fall day, I will put
on leave It. And I just I can't get over
the vocal arrangement on leave It.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
It is crazy good, incredible.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
That's what the bank geeks do every evening before a shore.
They don't do leave It in the dressing room. Oh
my godness, amazing.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
So how difficult was that to pull off? In the studio?
Was was a lot of it, just where you had
to keep doing live takes. I would imagine that it
was very difficult.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
Well, they started off with the basic idea and then
I would go and have a cup of tea and
to come back and sing my part, and then Chris
would come back from you a cup of tea or
a beer and then singing apart, and then I could
go and have so much tea.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
There was a lot of tea.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
Huh, there's a lot of tea in Brazil. Well that's coffee,
isn't it.
Speaker 1 (05:43):
Well, it's just it's still such a musical masterpiece. And
then you guys released the fully a cappella version, which
I don't know, I got like a twelve inch single
or a forty five you know, B side, And it
was cool to hear the completely a cappella version of
it too.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
Yeah. It was quite an exceptional structure, the whole structure,
and a lot of fun making it.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
Oh, I would love to be a fly on the
wall when the band geeks, you know, warm up to
that one in the dressing room.
Speaker 3 (06:13):
Oh boy, they're brilliant. I'm so blessed and grateful and thankful.
Speaker 1 (06:18):
Are you still enjoying the touring aspect of it? Do
you still like getting out there with the crowd?
Speaker 3 (06:22):
Oh gosh, Yeah, it really lifts you up every time
you've go on stage and singing the songs as well,
because most of the songs are fifty years old. Yeah,
and of course the new ones will fingers crossed and
will remember all the lyrics.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
Yeah, that's the one thing I would imagine with a
lot of your songs, you know, if you ever drop
the lyrics, I'm sure everybody else is singing along, right.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
Yeah, go to the crowd. Wonderful, wonderful fans.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
Yeah, well you've had fans obviously, they've been there with
you for a very long time, and I'm sure they're
going to love this.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
Yes it is.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
It's out now. It's John Anderson and the Band Geek.
It's called True. There are some great songs on there.
Had a chance to preview a few of them, and man,
it's gonna be something too. I really want to try
to catch you guys. I hope you come somewhere around
us in twenty twenty five and we can catch you
out there live.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
Absolutely, I'll see you there all right.
Speaker 1 (07:17):
John Anderson and the Band Geeks. Thank you so much. John,
it was huge to talk to you. Thank you so much,
my friend.
Speaker 3 (07:23):
Sure will Bye bye.
