Speaker 1 (00:00):
Thanks for checking out my Eighties Show podcast. Guitar Virtuoso,
Joe Satriani traveled the world for over three decades, sold
out crowds. Fifteen time Grammy Award nominee. He has played
with Peter Frampton, Steve Lucather of Toto, I mean, on
and on. He was recruited by Mick Jagger in nineteen
eighty eight to be lead guitarist for Jagger's solo tour.

(00:22):
He is all over the place and we're going to
talk about so much stuff with Joe Satriani on the
Eighties Show podcast Hotline.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
Hi, this is Joe.

Speaker 3 (00:30):
Hello Joe, It's Jeff Stevens. How you doing, man?

Speaker 2 (00:33):
Very good, Jeff, thanks for talking to me today.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
Well, I feel like I practically know you. I've watched
you play guitar for all these years. But I saw
the Sammy Hagart show back in August in Cincinnati, and
you guys were absolutely phenomenal, man, just just crazy, crazy good.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
Thank you, Thank you such a great tour. We had
so much fun on that tour.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
Uh yeah, that was the thing. You guys looked like
you were having so much fun. I mean, Sammy seems
like he's just a all the.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Time, all the time out on that for sure.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
Well.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
And the interesting thing, if we could talk about it
for just a second, The interesting thing about the Cincinnati show,
if I'm not mistaken, that was when Jason Bonham had
some personal issues and because Sammy talked about it on stage,
didn't Kenny Arnoff have like five minutes to prepare for
the entire set?

Speaker 2 (01:21):
Yeah? It was one of those moments where you realized
how amazing Kenny Aronoff really is. Besides the obvious, you know,
thunderous approach to his drumming, his musicianship is just at
the highest level, and he could somehow absorb a show
like that of all that material and get it learned,

(01:43):
you know, with just hours to spare. Just really amazing.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
Yeah, And I just I sat out there and I thought,
how in the world did he fly it? And I,
you know, knowing how accomplished he is, knowing how good
he is, how good all of you are, how do
you put that show? Not this is just come out
and play a couple you know, three minute pop songs, right,
such a complicated show and nobody knows that better than
you obviously coming into to play all of Eddie's suff

(02:09):
I was just blown away with how tight you guys
were from every punch and hit.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
It was incredible.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
Yeah, really amazing. Well, you know, Kenny's got this attention
to detail that I think just comes naturally to him.
We spent over a decade playing together under a lot
of different circumstances, and he approaches every gig the same way.
He just basically makes sure he knows every little thing
about what he has to do, memorizes it, practices it,

(02:37):
and then he shows up yeah, and doesn't like he's
been doing it his whole life. You know, he has
a way of making everything sound natural. And you know,
I don't know if you've ever met Kenny, but he's
like one of the funniest people to hang out with ever.
And oh good vibe on stage.

Speaker 3 (02:53):
That's cool.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
I've never had the pleasure, but you could certainly tell that,
and you described it perfectly, and I would imagine, you know, you, Joe,
being in that situation of I got to take on
the Eddie Van Halen, you know, catalog, But my goodness, man,
you just it's like you just drank it in and
poured it out.

Speaker 3 (03:12):
That was That was just an amazing night.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
Oh thank you. Thank you. It's always been a you know,
a combination of a nightmare and an honor, you know,
to tackle that intense amount of work that was so
unique and so good. You know. It's the great thing
about it is that it's so much fun just to

(03:34):
stare at your fingers while you're playing this incredible music
that Eddie wrote. But you also feel the responsibility to
do it right and you want to make people and
the audience feel good. You want to give them the
best possible version of it. So yeah, depending on you know,
how close your musicianship is to you know, Eddie style,

(03:58):
it can it can be an interesting challenge in a party.
At the same time, as I told David Lee Roth
and Alex van Halen and then later on Sammy Hagar,
I said, you know, I don't know why you're calling
me because I don't really play like Eddie. I've been
trying to avoid, you know, playing like him because I'm

(04:19):
such a big fan. But they were both, you know,
both camps were insistent that I was the guy to
do this, maybe specifically because I hadn't spent you know,
Mike trying to sound like Eddie. And I don't know,
but yeah, it's been a joy and, like I said,
just a monumental task at the same time.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
Well, Joe, I mean obviously everybody agrees, fans included. There
are I don't know one or two people that could
possibly even take on that, and obviously the band and
all the different members have thought that that. You know,
obviously you're the guy talking to Joe Satriani here, Joe,
we got two things going on here in addition to well,
obviously to talk a little bit more about Sammy, because

(05:01):
you guys have the Residency coming to Vegas in April
and May.

Speaker 3 (05:05):
Right.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
Yeah, I'm so happy about that. It's the first time
I'll be doing a restiveency type gig, which I'm really
looking forward to. You know, staying in one place and
being able to walk on a familiar stage for a
few weeks is just a great, you know, a treat
for us because usually we're just hustled off New City.
You know, we're in late every eighteen.

Speaker 3 (05:27):
Hours, so you never you've never done one before, never.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
Done one before, and then you know, the set list
can be changed every night, which is really great. That
just keeps everybody more interested and keeps us on our
toes and I think it makes the audience really happy.
They come to see multiple shows because they know they're
going to see some different songs.

Speaker 3 (05:47):
Oh yeah, yeah, and you.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
Know, just playing with Sammy, Mike and Kenny and Ray again,
it's just going to be great. You know, it's a
really fantastic band.

Speaker 3 (05:55):
Oh. It was just phenomenal. One of the best shows
I've seen in decades.

Speaker 1 (05:59):
And if so, hopefully folks, I'm sure people will be
traveling to Vegas to check out Sammy Hagar's Best of
All Worlds tour the Residency April thirtieth through May seventeenth.
And in addition to that, you've got the G three
reunion Live now captured after you know, over twenty five years.
That's exciting too, with you and Steve Vi and Eric Johnson.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
Yeah. Wow, it's so. I'm looking at the box set
right now, the four LPs, the two CDs, the unbelievable
beautiful photographic book that it comes with. This was, you know,
a tour that just sprung up out of the mind
of my son. He was actually talking to me about
a film idea which is in production right now, that

(06:43):
was chronicling his life as he turned four years old
and that week, you know, started his life on the
road with his parents, and it just happened to be
the same week of the very first G three tour
way back in ninety six. Wow. And was during the
production of the film that he suggested that we get

(07:04):
together for a show or a reunion concert. And that's
really what got the ball rolling is Wow. Luckily, you know,
Steve and Eric were available and they definitely wanted to
do it, so it all came together great. We all had,
you know, this one three week opening in our schedules
where we could get it done, and so we the

(07:26):
record company got so excited about this, said well, we'd
love to get a live record, So we got it recorded,
we got it filmed for the for the documentary, and
sees he came on stage and played Summer Song with
me too, father and son moment, and you'll see it
in the film when the film comes out, you'll be

(07:47):
able to see that the drama unfold. It was really
quite a fantastic evening.

Speaker 1 (07:52):
Oh that had to be a huge, huge chill slash
proud moment for.

Speaker 3 (07:56):
You, Joe.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
Yeah, absolutely really great.

Speaker 1 (07:59):
G three Reunion Live available January thirty, first Satriani dot
com all major digital platforms, and Joe just me, don't
you love that vinyl?

Speaker 3 (08:09):
Is? Is?

Speaker 1 (08:10):
It sort of kind of went away for a minute,
but it's so much a thing again. So you're talking
about this packaging and stuff. I can't I can't buy
enough vinyl.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
Yeah, it's really it takes me back. You know, when
I was a young kid, I would sit and listen
to vinyls, you know, top to bottom, side, one side too.
Double outs were such a treat. It was such a
different way of listening to music because music was not
available in so many different contexts as it was as

(08:42):
it is today. So generally you'd have to go to
where the record player was. Yeah, that's right, rock music.
You know. It's really interesting how times have changed. So
it's really great, and of course the sound is really
pleasing to the year.

Speaker 1 (08:57):
I think, oh yeah, and this will this will be
an excellent I'm sure. And by the way, I know,
I'm going to let you go here, but one of
my buddies here that I work with at iHeart says,
if you'll just package up one of your new metallic
gold ibanez and ship it off to him, that'd be great.

Speaker 2 (09:12):
Coming up.

Speaker 1 (09:15):
Yes, yeah, all right, good good. I'll tell you to
just just to wait out there until it gets there.

Speaker 2 (09:19):
Right.

Speaker 1 (09:22):
Oh, he's drooling all over that guitar. I'm like, that
is a beautiful guitar.

Speaker 2 (09:26):
That is an amazing finish they dreamed up. Yeah, it's funny.
You know, after we had done the chrome guitars for decades,
I said I really love a gold one, you know,
and they really jumped at it and just came up
with just a unique goal that no one had tried
to do before. So yeah, it's a beautiful instrument, really nice.

Speaker 3 (09:45):
It is.

Speaker 1 (09:46):
Well, good luck with that, Good luck with the G
three reunion Live and the Sammy residency in Vegas. Joe Satrianni,
great talking to you man.

Speaker 2 (09:53):
Thank you
