Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning. This is Miami Valley View, a public service
affairs program. It's brought to you by iHeartMedia Dayton and
I'm your host Dave Alexander. And joining me this morning
is the tech Stars Startup Weekend. We have Matt Veriser,
the organizer of the event, and Randy Hinders, the facilitator. Guys.
(00:20):
Good morning, Dave, thank you so much for having us
here this morning.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Good morning, thank you.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
Right on, It's nice to meet you. Thank you guys
for coming in. Appreciate it all. Right, So, first and foremost,
what is Startup Weekend?
Speaker 3 (00:35):
So Startup Weekend it's an event. It's a competition where
we'll bring together about seventy participants and over the course
of the weekend, they'll start just from scratch, just ideas,
and they will build a bunch of prototype businesses. They'll
build a bunch of startups and they'll compete to see
(00:57):
how far they can get over the course of one weekend.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
So this is a competition. Yeah, yeah, right on. So this, well,
I'm assuming competition is going to be spurring some creativity,
I would imagine.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
Yeah, you know, the pressure is on because we just
have basically two days to prototype your business, prototype your product,
try and get some customers. It's a it's a sprint.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
So who, like, if somebody's hearing this for the first
time and they're like, I would love to do that.
Am I the right kind of person that should be
doing this?
Speaker 3 (01:27):
Who?
Speaker 1 (01:28):
What kind of people are you looking for?
Speaker 3 (01:30):
So Startup Weekend is open to everyone, Okay, Like, we're
looking for a mix of business people. Yeah, we call
them hustlers. Yeah, so we're looking for hustlers, people with
a lot of drive. We're looking for people with technical
skills too, so you know, we're looking for uh, designers
(01:54):
and engineers and and you know, people to actually make
and build these prototypes over the course of the weekend too.
And so all of the concepts that advance over the
course of the weekend will have a team. And so
this requirement, you know, you have to have at least
two people working on this project, but typically the teams
are gonna be about five people, so you're you'll have
(02:15):
a mix of talent all across that team.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
Can you give me an example of like what kind
of businesses startups have actually happened in the past.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
Yeah, So last year's winner at Startup Weekend in Dayton
was a was a product software company called volley and
it is a sand volleyball scheduling service. And so this
sounds like a really small niche, and it is a
small niche. It sounds like a small problem. But actually,
(02:46):
when when you're managing a large tournament and you might
have some three hundred different teams and you have a
variety of people on each of those teams, right, one
person might be playing on a five person team and
on a three person team, was managing the schedule for
that becomes incredibly complex. It's like a multi day process
to try.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
To I'm well aware we had when my kids were
in grade school, they had a volleyball tournament to raise money,
and we were like, I mean, just the scheduling of
it alone was required, you know, a day or two meeting.
It's insane. It was insane. But yeah, that's really cool. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
So the founder of that, he came in, he pitched
the idea. He's a sand volleyballer, he's a software developer.
He pulled together a team and over the course of
the weekend they were able to prototype out an algorithm, yeah,
to automate all of this, and so they actually launched
a business and he has real customers, now paying customers,
and a live software and it'll it handles the scheduling
(03:46):
process in seconds.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
It's incredible, no kidding. Yeah, and that was all that
all started here because of the startup weekend.
Speaker 3 (03:52):
Yeah, right here in Dayton.
Speaker 1 (03:53):
So what, like you said, he was only he's sand
volleyball players, well but a software developer engineer year However,
so what who else did he have with him as
a part of his team, just you know, giving an
example of what it's going to kind of show up.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
Yeah, so he he had a mix of professionals, right,
so other working professionals and actually some college students on
his team. So it's a really good experience for some
students to work with people who are in the industry.
But yeah, his team was a little bit more tac heavy.
(04:28):
So I think he had a designer on his team
and engineers because it was an algorithm that was building
the building.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
Yeah, that's incredible. So this is very popular with students.
Then I would imagine some some up and coming they
got an idea for a business or entrepreneurs or whatever
the case may be. Yeah, you got it.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
So the University of Dayton is one of our Murquys sponsors.
He's been a sponsor of this program now.
Speaker 1 (04:52):
Four years running.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
Four years running.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
Yeah, so four years running.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
Yeah, they've been a really important part of the overall
story here and and yeah, typically with each Startup Weekend, well,
we'll have at least a dozen students. We're really excited
this year or how a university is going to be
sending a half dozen students, Oh wow, you know, they're
getting rooms for them and they're they're they're sponsoring their
trip out here. So it's it's gonna be it's gonna
(05:16):
be cool collaborative environment. And we'll probably have students from
three different universities. And then the majority of the community
at Startup Weekend will be working professionals.
Speaker 1 (05:25):
Though that's great, So so how do you reach out
to the working professionals like you were like, hey, we
have it and we have a chance for you guys
to make some startup business. I mean, is that is
that how that works?
Speaker 3 (05:39):
Or so most working professionals will sign up for a
Startup Weekend because you know, they're working a day job. Yeah,
and they're they're curious about what it's like to start
a business. There they've got an idea, they've got the
itch called the entrepreneurial edch right, and they just can't
get rid of it. And this is the best way
for them to give that it container to try it
(06:02):
out right, And so we reached them through outreach like
this social media. You know, there are a bunch of
other you know, working developer groups and things like that
that that we also reached out to connect with people.
Speaker 1 (06:18):
Yeah, so that's great, looking for somebody to collaborate with.
He's like, that's saying volleyball things. Sounds pretty cool. Yeah, yeah,
so how what what? So this is the fourth year,
fourth year, right, fourth year? So what made you guys
start it? Four years ago?
Speaker 3 (06:32):
I had been organizing startup weekends. I've organized them for
about ten years now, Okay, and you know, it's the
It's the single most catalytic event that I that I've seen,
you know, I I've organized dozens of these, and I've
seen it change the career trajectories of countless people. You know.
(06:55):
I've seen so many people come to this event as
a entrepreneur and then three months later, that's great, come
to me as an actual entrepreneur, Like they actually go
and start their business right, and there's nothing else that
that I've that I've ever witnessed that's so impactful.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
Yeah, so yeah, that was why I moved back to
Dayton and I was like, you know what, we got
to do it here.
Speaker 1 (07:18):
Yeah, that's really cool. It's a that's a it's a
great idea. And I'm going to guess even you know,
you have a winner. Obviously there's somebody who wins, but
I'm going to guess probably a lot of people who
are in that is you know, they're they're even spurred
even further on to develop what they're trying to get done.
So not only do you have a winner, but I
(07:38):
bet there's a lot of people that are winning that
all get involved in this.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
Yeah, definitely, And that's where we want those people that
want to be an entrepreneur, they want to try it.
The entrepreneurs and myself, I've been involved in a number
of years from a participant to a mentor to now
facilitating it, and it's truly one of those events where
you've always thought about it. How do I start a business?
What's needed? How do I start talking to customers? How
do I do this? This is an excellent opportunity to
(08:03):
figure that out.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
Yeah, I'm going to guess there are a ton of
people out there on entrepreneurs I love that term, by
the way. That is awesome that have like a great
idea that they think could really do a lot of good,
but they have no idea how to get it started right.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
And that's where it's great that we're involved with the
Entrepreneur Center here and the Hub being able to have
that backing. Myself, I was able to start a business,
you know, with their support and their help, and should
it grow and get big enough, you know, the tech
Stars is also a sponsor and working with us, so
there's global outreach when the business grows that far.
Speaker 1 (08:35):
Yeah, So there are plenty of opportunities for success if
you're looking for to start something up. I mean, this
is this is where you want to be. The thing is,
when is it? Where is it? How do we get involved?
I'll let Randy take that all right.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
It's March twenty eighth to thirtieth, okay here at the
Entrepreneur Center. So if they go to startup weekend dayton
dot com, there's actually a promo code for those that
are listening off with oh iHeart I Heeart is the
radio sponsor code, so we appreciate your support and getting
the word out there. And it's it's Friday through Sunday.
(09:10):
So Friday afternoon, come, We've got food, We'll have dinner,
might be some drinks for those that are twenty one
in order, I will say that we do want participants
to be eighteen in order liability ortsest. But Friday afternoon
or Friday evening, we'll start pitching ideas, start going over
the ideas, forming teams. Saturday, the real work happens and
(09:31):
as far as getting out, I'm solidifying the idea, talking
to customers, going over to the Second Street market in
order to pitch the idea to customers, try to.
Speaker 1 (09:39):
Get some sales.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
And then Sunday you wrap up the pitch, do your practice,
and do the actual pitch in front of judges and
announce the winter.
Speaker 1 (09:48):
That is great. So Friday you get to come and
pitch an idea. That's the whole idea. So you started
off basically starting it off like I've got a great idea,
And at this weekend you're trying and you're basically like, hey,
I've got somebody you need to meet, or somebody's like, hey,
that sounds like a great idea.
Speaker 2 (10:06):
Correct, Yeah, and then the teams will formed. We want
everybody to try to pitch an idea, just to get
used to talking and opening up a little.
Speaker 1 (10:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (10:12):
But then after that they form a team, and then
they go into their little huddles and work together.
Speaker 1 (10:16):
Right, And I'm guessing that's that's It's a great place
for students to be. This is a great place to learn.
I mean, you're gonna be end up doing this anyway,
so why not get it started and a chance to
actually get it going right?
Speaker 2 (10:28):
And if nine out of ten businesses fail, have a
Startup Weekend business be one of those failures.
Speaker 1 (10:32):
Yeah, that's right, that's right. All right. So once again,
where where do we get tickets? And how much are they?
I know you said there was a promo code.
Speaker 3 (10:41):
Yeah, so you can get tickets at Startup Weekend dayton
dot com. The tickets are typically seventy five bucks, okay,
but with the promo code, the fifty percent off promo code,
you can get them for what's that thirty seven and
fifty Yeah.
Speaker 1 (10:56):
Well, I'm glad you guys are doing the math. I'm
in radio. We don't do man.
Speaker 3 (11:00):
And again that promo code is iHeart.
Speaker 1 (11:03):
Okay, great, all right, So we've got the weekend March
twenty eighth. Is that Friday? So that whole weekend here
at the Arcade and the Entrepreneur Center here in the Hub,
And I mean, what a cool stuff. So you said
the volleyball was the big winner last year. Can you
recall any others that have been? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (11:21):
So another really interesting outcome of a startup weekend that
I helped organize. It was a health healthcare specific startup
weekend in Columbus. I think it was twenty fourteen, wow,
ten years ago.
Speaker 1 (11:36):
It must have been my first one.
Speaker 3 (11:38):
There was a young entrepreneur, Claire Coder, who pitched an
idea for buy one, give one period products. Yeah, and
that company is called ant Flow, And some of you
might recognize ant Flow. You go to some of the
bars and restaurants around Dayton, you'll see their products in
the bathrooms. You go to some of the universities around town.
(11:58):
It's at those Universe cities. You know, students coming from OU. Yeah,
all the bathrooms at OU, you know, are filled with
flow products, and so you know, it's it's it's a
cool kind of story there where you know, some of
the students are actually going to be using a product
that is built and developed at a Startup Weekend. But yeah,
(12:19):
so that that that started at Startup Weekend. It's incredible
the brand that she still uses today. She drew up
in Canva at startup Weekend. Wow, and she she employs
I think close to fifty people now, yeah, and has
raised you know, tens of millions of dollars and has
built in a country wide business. Yeah, it's quite it's
(12:42):
quite incredible.
Speaker 1 (12:43):
Success is going to happen, and it could happen that weekend,
March twenty eighth with the Startup Weekend here at the
Entrepreneur Center at the Arcade. So get involved. If you
got an idea, this is the time to do it, right. Yeah, definitely,
right on, So let's get it done. This should be
a blast. Here's hoping that there are a ton of
people here because you know, the minds, the creativity that
(13:06):
you guys are creating and setting up some great stuff.
So once again, give me the website. So we just
we have that down to get tickets.
Speaker 3 (13:12):
Startup Weekend dayton dot com.
Speaker 1 (13:15):
All right, and you can use the code iHeart to
get the ticket price half off right now, and come
on out hey, if you've never been to the Arcades,
pretty cool place that way, and that might even inspire
you more to create something. Guys, Randy Matt, it has
been an outstanding time having you here and I wish
you all the success.
Speaker 2 (13:32):
Thank you very much. We appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (13:34):
Thanks so much.
