Speaker 1 (00:01):
Good morning. This is Miami Valley View, a public service
affairs program brought to you by iHeartMedia. Dayton I'm your host,
Dave Alexander, and joining me this morning is Mike Fully,
the Montgomery County Clerk of Courts.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
How you doing, Mike, I'm doing well. Dave, Thanks for
having me this morning.

Speaker 1 (00:18):
Great to have you in this morning. You've got a
lot going on, and we want to talk about some
veterans services that are that are happening here will real
soon I know, November November, September seventeenth. I'm jumping ahead.
I'm in the wrong month, September seventeenth. We got a
lot of stuff going on. So started off, what are
we talking about.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
Well, our newest program, Dave is it's a veterans program.
And I'm a veteran and I want to do what
I can to help other veterans. And we were one
of the largest issuers of passports, and what better idea
than helping our area veterans. So yeah, we're starting a

(00:59):
program that we don't take any internal fees, any local fees,
so that any veteran can save upwards of fifty dollars
anytime they come in and get a new issued.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
Passport saving fifty bucks.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
Fifty bucks.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
Yeah, that's maas So this and this starts.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
We started it last week, so it's it's just you know,
it's new, but we want to get the word out
and we're in the process of reaching out to and
vets and American legions and just the community to let
them know that what we're doing to take care of
our veterans.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
Has any idea if a lot of veterans have not
renewed passports or gotten passports because of the cost, and
now that we want to you're offering this fifty dollars off,
which is huge. It's a lot of money to help
them all out.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
I'm not I think we're just in the early stages
of getting the word out, but we're happy to do
what we can for area veterans. And I'm proud to
be a veteran myself. So fifty bucks is fifty bucks, amen,
And you never need an appointment with us. Walk ins
always welcome. We're the only ones I think that take
walkins here in the county. So any of our five

(02:16):
auto title locations come in anytime and we will take
care of you. A white gloves service.

Speaker 1 (02:22):
I white gloves service. I love it. So Centerville, Clayton, Downtown,
Huber Heights, and Maraine. Swing on by the Montgomery County
Auto Title locations. Veterans, you're gonna get fifty dollars off
passports right now. Thank you, Mike, appreciate it. So that's
but that's not the only thing going on. I mean,
that would make for a very quick interview. So what
else we have else?

Speaker 2 (02:43):
Well, back track a little bit. We have an easy
website to remember. It's just we do passports dot com
and it walks you through everything you need to bring
in because you know, we don't want you to show
up and don't have what you need. That's it, right,
So we do passports dot com.

Speaker 1 (02:59):
Right, that's good mention that again, Okay, we do passports
dot com.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
Got it. Some of the other programs, you know, since
I've been in office just over five years, we tried
to focus a lot on technology and customer service. So
we've instituted a lot of things just for the people.
Because no one really knows what the clerk of courts does.

Speaker 1 (03:19):
I was going to ask you that.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
So besides filing lawsuits and we do issue auto titles,
we do some things like people don't realize, like the passports.
We started doing online notaries back during COVID. We could
do a notary online if you had a computer or
a smartphone. But some of the other things court text notifications.

(03:45):
Anytime you have court, you can sign up and be
reminded through notifications, similar to I guess a dentist or
doctor would do. But we're proud of that service.

Speaker 1 (03:58):
What is brilliant though, you know, it is good to
have that note toft. Everybody does everything on their phones
these days, you know, and if you can get that
buzz in your pocket and you look like, oh, you
know exactly.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
I've got another thing that goes hand to hand hand
in hand with passports is tsa pre check. You know
a lot of people want to avoid those lines going
to the airport. Yeah, and we're the only one, uh
you know that's doing that here in the county. So
we can do that for you as well. Avoid those
lines and go on in and we can help you.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
And it's so simple to go in and get your
your tsa pre check thing done. I mean it's literally
a fingerprint. Yeah, it's not that difficult to People are like,
what do I got to do to get you know,
the check through too. It's nothing. Yeah, go see go
see Michael do it personally. I don't know about that,
but you could stop by it and get that that

(04:51):
service taken care of.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
Yes you can, yeah, thank you, thank you.

Speaker 1 (04:57):
So what else we got going.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
On, Well, we have a lot coming up September seventeenth,
and every year I've tried to give back with some
of these added services that we're launching, and anytime we
can have some excess money, we like to give it
back to the community and to the county for them
to use for other programs and projects to benefit others

(05:21):
here locally. So on the seventeenth, we'll be giving two
million dollars back to the county.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
Oh wow.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
And we're proud of that. No other elected official can
do that. But with some of these added services, we're
fortunate that we can help out others by giving back.
So we will be giving a check to the County
Commission on the seventeenth of September two million dollars.

Speaker 1 (05:47):
Wow dollars. That's awesome. That's always good to have to
be given back and we appreciate that. From the Clerk
of Courts office. Thank you. Mike we we got some
other things happening around in the office. What do we
got going on?

Speaker 2 (06:01):
We got a lot of things.

Speaker 1 (06:02):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
We have something called Connecting with the Community that I
started about three years ago, and it's it's an open
forum that we meet. We started once a month and
you know, government leaders and people that do things in
the community. We have an open form and we have
a presentation and people come out and learn about local government.

(06:24):
And it got so popular that we instituted one in
North and one in South. So besides the one in
Dayton at the Employment Opportunity Center on West third Street,
we now have a location in huber Heights in in

(06:44):
the library up there, and then south in Centerville in
the wood Woodburn Library on on Far Hills.

Speaker 1 (06:52):
Yeah, that's a gorgeous line.

Speaker 2 (06:54):
We have, you know, three tuesdays of the month, we're
out in the community talking about local programs and local
government and it's just an open form to learn and
to ask questions. So we're proud of that.

Speaker 1 (07:07):
And yeah, you know, and I think that's an awesome
thing that you're doing because I know there's probably a
lot of people in the community, not just dating alone,
but I mean all over the place that have a
lot of questions about local government and what's happening there,
who's doing what, what should I be understanding? And that's
really kind of cool that you guys are are helping
people understand that and hopefully people are taking advantage. Obviously

(07:28):
they are. If you've had to go on from one
to now four different areas to get it done.

Speaker 2 (07:34):
Yeah, one location was getting so busy that we wanted
to offer it for North and South and those are
getting started and you know, exceedingly popular.

Speaker 1 (07:45):
Yeah, that's great, that's great news. So what else we
got going on? I mean, you got a long list
of really great stuff happening here.

Speaker 2 (07:52):
One thing that we started back and going back a
few years twenty nineteen, but we started a help center.
It's something that was needed here in the community. People
don't really understand the legal justice system sometimes and we
kind of helped navigate that court system. So you know,

(08:13):
we don't give legal advice, sure, not attorneys, but we
give information on how to learn about navigating the court system.
And we have a variety of topics from expungement to
you know, probate to you know, amnesty programs and getting
your driver's license back. But just a plethora of information

(08:37):
that we started out in the courthouse, but we soon
found out that people didn't want to go in the courthouse.
It's it's an intimidating place. We wanted to go where
people are. So we started two to three times a week,
you know, we'd go to libraries, we'd go to we'd
go to food pantries, we'd go to community centers, we'd

(09:01):
go to YMCA's, we'd go to where people are. So
you know that that has gone from two to three
days a week to four to five days a week.

Speaker 1 (09:10):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (09:10):
And we're out in the community NonStop. And it feels
good to be out there and helping people.

Speaker 1 (09:15):
So yeah, you know, and that's that's also once again
great things you guys are doing for the community. Because
I'm going to imagine if if you're new and you
have to go to court for whatever reason it might be,
and you're like, I mean, you can google all that stuff,
but usually when you google all that stuff, you've got
paragraphs upon paragraphs in terms that you don't won't understand.

(09:38):
And if you can go and hear you know, coming
and ask questions to an actual person, I'm going to
get you really get to understand it. Yeah, a lot easier.

Speaker 2 (09:47):
Right, So we kind of act as the quarterback. We
we put people together and we help navigate when they
have questions and you know who they can speak to,
whether there's a public defender, yeah, or whom have or
one other topic. We started doing drivers tests like BMV
driving tests. There was such a backlog after COVID, right,

(10:10):
the only location was huber Heights at least in this
county to take a driver's test, so especially new drivers,
they'd have to wait, you know, a couple of months
just to get in.

Speaker 1 (10:20):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (10:20):
So we had the opportunity in one of our auto
title offices down in Moraine that we're actually doing testing now, oh,
to alleviate some of that waight time. So the BMV
testing just the driving test, not the written portion right
the en road, you know, the road test. We're doing
that in Moraine.

Speaker 1 (10:41):
Well it's good to know for all those folks who
are like, oh god, we've got weight, how long? Oh wait,
in Moraine we can go down and and go take
that that driver's test, because yeah, I've I actually live
in Warren County, but my daughter just recently got her
her driver's license. A couple of months ago, and you know,
you look at the wait. We got to wait how
long to get this test take, which was disappointing to her.

(11:04):
I was fine with let's take as much time as
we need. But you know, if you're looking to get
your driver especially if you know if it's for the
first time or if you're an older adult now you're
trying to get your driver's license back, maybe you got
to go to work somewhere. You need to get it.
You don't want to wait a couple of months, So
make sure you're looking at that marine location as well.

Speaker 2 (11:23):
Yes, so services, we're just trying to add services to
the community and help out any way we can. So
that's kind of been my background. But we we enjoy
being out in the community and we're happy to share
some of these new services with Montgomery County and the
counties that are adjacent to Montgomery County.

Speaker 1 (11:44):
That's great, all right. So we've we've listed a lot
of things going on going on here. What's run down
real quick once again before we run out of time.
We've got the VET program going on with the passport,
right so that's fifty bucks off right.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
Now, fifty fifty cents off. That's correct.

Speaker 1 (12:02):
You've got you're going out in the community helping people understand,
help them guide the court systems. Right, And that's how
often do you do that?

Speaker 2 (12:10):
We do that four to five days a week. That's
that's our community outreach for our help center.

Speaker 1 (12:16):
Your help center. And I'm trying to think what else
we can even We've listed a lot of things.

Speaker 2 (12:20):
Yeah, we got the five, ten and ten. That's just
over five years, we added ten news services, and we've
been able to give back ten million dollars to the
county to other programs and projects that are needed. So
we're proud of that and proud to give back.

Speaker 1 (12:36):
Mike, you were doing some wonderful things around Montgomery County,
that is for sure. So if I, let's say somebody
was looking for one of those community help programs and
now you go out all over the place, you said, why,
for instance, you know community centers, food banks, libraries, Where
can I find a schedule?

Speaker 2 (12:55):
Good question, Dave. We have an easy website to remember,
it's just court House to you courthouse tou dot com.
We have our connecting with the community, and we have
our community outreach for this help center. So there's a
lot of valuable information on there, so please go to
courthouse dou dot com and get more info.

Speaker 1 (13:14):
Great, like I said, doing a lot of great things
for Montgomery County. We do appreciate it. Mike, thanks for
joining us this morning. Appreciate you.

Speaker 2 (13:22):
Thank you. Dave Okay, bye bye
