Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning. This is Miami Valley View, a Dayton's public
service program. It's all brought to you by iHeartMedia Dayton.
I am your host, Dave Alexander. And joining me this
morning are the folks from Noble Circle Project. We have
Kim Ferris, the chair of their upcoming Aware Affair. Hi Kim,
Nice to have you back again.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
As always, it's always good to be here. And this
is my favorite chair when I come in.
Speaker 1 (00:23):
That's my chair.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
I know, that's where I said.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
All the time. I know it's warms and I don't
usually move a whole lot.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Good vibes.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Also, we have a Jenny Man who is the chair
of the Noble Circle Project. Good morning Jenny, Good morning Dave.
And Sally Blomos here as well. She is a Noble
Circle Project's sister team group thirty four thirty four. So
all right, and of course we're gonna be talking about
the Aware Affair, which is coming up towards the end
of February. But I think it's always a good idea
(00:52):
when we have you ladies come in here is to
go over again what the Noble Circle Project is, Especially
people who have never heard of the Noble Circle Project.
I think it's a great idea that we kind of
run down a little bit of what you guys do
as a as a as a group for women. It's
a it's an amazing thing.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
Yes, thank you, Dave.
Speaker 4 (01:12):
So.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
Noble Circle was founded in two thousand and three by
eight local women who wanted to thrive beyond cancer and
their dream was to have one or two groups and
be done with that organization. However, it has lasted now
twenty two years.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
We are now, wait, that's funny. They just figured it
was going to be one or two.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
They had no idea that they that we would still
be around two years later.
Speaker 1 (01:39):
It's a fantastic thing.
Speaker 5 (01:41):
It is a fantastic you know that that that this
that Noble Circle project does, And it's funny that that
they think, ah, yeah, well maybe we'll get one or
two groups out of this and we'll be done with it.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
And now how many years later, twenty two years.
Speaker 1 (01:55):
That's amazing, it's amazing. So what is what is Noble Circle?
Speaker 4 (01:58):
So?
Speaker 3 (01:58):
We are a group of women thriving beyond cancer. We
accept any woman at any stage, any type of cancer,
anywhere in their cancer journey. We provide a weekend retreat
for those women where they learn where they bond with
their sisters in that group, and then we have a
(02:19):
weekly program after that where we teach our pillars which
are nutrition, education, complementary energy, and peer support. So in
those three pillars, they learn whole foods, nutrition, they learn
energy techniques, We teach chigong and other energy techniques for
(02:41):
them to use during their cancer journey. And then just
the peer support coming together with women in similar stages
of cancer treatment or beyond cancer treatment, just to learn
to thrive.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
Yeah, actually think that's I think that of anything, that's
probably one of the most important things you could be
is have a group of peers, because I'm going to
guess when you get diagnosed with cancer that you know,
you you probably feel all alone. You know, you feel
like you're out there stuck in an island somewhere, and
then all of a sudden, you're with a group of
other women who are just going through the same thing.
(03:15):
You are, right, and now you have someone to talk to.
Speaker 3 (03:18):
And it's nice because we take women in all different stages.
So in my case, I joined two years after I
finished treatment. I just wasn't ready at the time when
I was going through treatment. To be in a group.
But there were women in my group that were starting
treatment five years after treatment, you know, just in the process.
(03:38):
So it's nice to be able to see the life
cycle of treatment and that there is hope beyond that treatment.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
Yeah, Sally, I'm going to get to you real real quick.
What group are we on now?
Speaker 2 (03:51):
Let me see forty one, forty one, forty I think
forty one, okay, I think it's forty two.
Speaker 1 (03:59):
Okay, So Sally, your group is group thirty four thirty four.
So I'm going to guess for the past six or
seven years, you guys are still very very tight as
a group, I'm sure, oh very much.
Speaker 4 (04:09):
So we get together for holidays when we can, you know,
just even sending out text to everybody's.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
Still a lot text.
Speaker 4 (04:15):
Quite a bit. Yeah, how's your day, you know, and
happy in birthdays, we remember birthdays and things like that.
And then for fundraising, you know, we call them the sisters, right,
it's time to raise some money for this so that
it can continue.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
And that's what it is. It's it's a sisterhood, not
bound by you know, familiar or family thing, but I
mean it's you're all bonded in a way that unfortunately
you're bonded. But still, yeah, you know your sisters.
Speaker 4 (04:39):
It's an amazing thing to not know somebody and then
just know somebody through what they're going through because they
nobody understands them like you do at that moment. Yeah,
even though you may be on a different path or
at a different time, it's still I get what you're feeling.
I get what you're feeling, and you can talk to
me about it.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
Yes, Sally and I have been friends. We started working
in radio toge other what thirty well more than that now,
but we've been friends for over thirty five years. And
she was diagnosed with breast cancer six months before I
was diagnosed, and so she and I had talked. She
knew that I had been a longtime supporter of the
(05:15):
Noble Circle Project, and I said, Sal, we've got to
do this. We've got to join this organization and go
through this retreat. And it was right when COVID was ending.
It was just it was a really tough time for
the Noble Circle Project, really anyone that's trying to get
groups together. And so Sal said, I don't know if
(05:36):
I can do it or not. I'm wearing a mask
all weekend. It's going to be different because we go
away for the retreats for the weekend and when we
were driving back after the retreat, she had tears in
her eyes and said, I'm so glad I did this.
It is such a powerful weekend.
Speaker 1 (05:53):
Yeah, it's a life changing event. Really sure it is
not only are you you know, of course, your life
changing event being diagnosed, but another life changing event because
you've just you've just gained a bunch of sisters and
support network, you know what I mean. And I think
that's amazing. You guys do wonderful, wonderful things. So how
does one other than listening to this program, how does
(06:16):
one find out about the Noble Circle Project.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
So we have partnerships, i would say, with local oncology
clinics where they have our birchuores. People can go to
our website at Noblecircle dot org to learn about the program.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
You can follow us on Instagram and Facebook. We have
a public page that's just Noble Circle Project, and you
can find out about any of the things that we
have coming up. We have several fundraisers during the year,
and of course we'll be talking about our largest one
coming up. But we have several fundraisers throughout the year
that the general public can be a part of. But
(06:58):
if you are a person or a woman who has
been diagnosed with any form of cancer and you're just
starting your cancer journey, or if your cancer journey was
a few years ago but you still would like to
get involved, you can also find out how you can
become a Noble Circle sister at Noblecircle dot org.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
All right, and I'm real curious about you know, you
had said you had brochures and oncologists and whatnot. Was
that difficult? Was it hard to get to get into
those I'm just I'm really curious, like, hey, we're doing
this thing, here's this or were they like, hey, yeah,
we're cool.
Speaker 3 (07:31):
I think oncology clinics are looking for resources for their patience. Yeah,
so anything you can offer them they accept.
Speaker 1 (07:40):
And I'm going to guess now, you guys have such
a good reputation. I mean, if this if you said
we're on group forty, you know that's probably the reputation
of the Noble Circle project is out there. So I'm
sure oncologists doctors are all like, we have something that
you know, we think would benefit you. Has anybody have
you reached out to anybody and we're hesitant about and
you had to convince thems like this is probably a
(08:02):
good idea Or was that Sally?
Speaker 4 (08:03):
That was me?
Speaker 2 (08:04):
That was me as Sally.
Speaker 4 (08:05):
I felt like my dag my journey wasn't going to
be as difficult as some I had. I was very
early in my breast cancer journey that I felt like,
this isn't going to be a big deal. This is
a no pun intended a bump in the road for me,
and I felt like there were other women who needed
it more than I did because it's all free. I mean,
this whole weekend, all the classes, all the food, everything
(08:28):
was complimentary. I didn't have to pay one penny. And
I felt like somebody else could use this more than
I do because I feel fine about this cancer. I
can handle this.
Speaker 2 (08:37):
I got it. I've got it.
Speaker 4 (08:38):
I've got all support I need. And then I didn't
realize a lot of feelings that were going to come
up that I needed more support. I needed to talk
to somebody besides my husband or my sister or somebody
who just didn't really understand how I was feeling in
my fears. So any any point in time, it's it's
amazing for anybody to be able to had this kind
(09:00):
of support and commitment of this of this group.
Speaker 1 (09:04):
Yeah, so when does when does it? When does the
retreat start? If I'm I ask when's the.
Speaker 2 (09:07):
Next when it's going to be coming up? In March?
Speaker 4 (09:10):
Okay?
Speaker 1 (09:10):
Is that when they usually are?
Speaker 2 (09:11):
They're usually March in September okay. And one thing I
was going to say, Jenny talked about our energy technique
called chigong, and it's it's a form of like a
yoga tigi type thing. Well, when people think of support groups,
a lot of times you go to the fact of
I don't want to go to a support group where
(09:32):
everyone is going to be whining about the fact, Oh
I've got cancer, Why this have to happen to me?
You're going to find nothing like that through the Noble
Circle Project and the groups. And I blame it. I
attribute that to the fact of the energy technique Chigong,
because it gives you such a positive feeling all the
(09:55):
way in your core nice and it just makes you
feel empowered and ready to talk to your sisters. And
I can remember when when I was going through the
worst part of my chemo, I was on a chemo
pill and I was really having a difficult time with it,
and we were having a meeting and we were just
chatting about, you know, things that were a little as
(10:16):
Sally said, bumps in the road for us, and I
mentioned that, and I saw one of our sisters who
was in another group before ours, kind of shaking her head.
And after the meeting was over, I went over to
Nadia and I said, Hey, I saw you shaking your head.
She goes, that's the chemo pill I've been on, and
I've had the same experiences, and it really was so
(10:40):
powerful to me to know that I wasn't alarmed. It
really is just it's a huge journey to go through,
and having the Noble Circle sisters to go with you
on that journey is spectacular.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
So I think one of the amazing things about this whole,
your whole retreat and your groups and is that it's free. Yes,
retreat is free, which means that it's up to us
to help you guys fund some money. So that brings
us to which I'm guessing is your primary fundraiser, which
is happening towards the end of February, and that's aware
(11:12):
affair Yes, Jim Ferris, who is the chairperson. How lucky
for us to have you here with us today.
Speaker 5 (11:19):
Amazing.
Speaker 1 (11:19):
So what's Awarefair?
Speaker 2 (11:21):
Aware Fair? This is the twentieth It would be the
twenty second, but COVID god in the way, get it.
But the twentieth Aware Fair Fashion Show Luncheon. It is
on February the twenty second. It's always the last Saturday
in February, no matter when that is. So this year
is February twenty second. It's at the Sinclair Center, or
(11:43):
it used to be called the popeent Center, and now
they call it the Sinclair Conference Center because it's probably
the biggest space that can handle the six to seven
hundred people that we're hoping to have an attendance that day.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
Now, have you been the MC every year?
Speaker 2 (11:58):
Every year? Every year? Yes. In fact, we were just
having a discussion about that last night. This was not
ever in my plan that I was going to be
diagnosed with cancer. Twenty two years ago, when I met
the Noble Circle Sisters from Group number one, I just
knew that this was something that I really felt to
be a part of it. Yes, And so here we
(12:19):
are now with our twentieth and we looked up what
the gemstone was for a twenty year anniversary, and it
just so happened to be the Emerald, and so lo
and behold back. In March of twenty twenty four, right
after the last Aware Fair, we decided to call our
(12:40):
twenty twenty five Aware Fair one fine day in the
Emerald gem City. Everyone deserves the chance to thrive. Expect
that in November Wicked would come out.
Speaker 1 (12:59):
Crush it.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
Yes, so it's been it's been a lot of fun.
We always have boutique shopping that starts at ten and
we have just amazing vendors, usually between twenty to twenty
five vendors who do everything between woodworking to jewelry to
make up that's amazing, healthy, you said, cookies that's her favorite,
(13:22):
good and just and they're all local vendors and they
come and set up their wares and you can purchase
things from them, and a portion of all the proceeds
that they sell that day they donate. That's nice to
Noble Search. And then we have a luncheon and it's fabulous.
(13:42):
We always have a vegetarian dish and a chicken dish,
and we work very hard. In fact, these two were
part of the tasting committee.
Speaker 1 (13:51):
That's not a bad job.
Speaker 2 (13:54):
I was told that I missed out. So we have
this fabulous meal that's prepared Sinclair, and then we have
a fashion show. Sweet and the fashion show this year
styles from Pieces of Style in Centerville and also zig
Zag Gallery. They have been longtime supporters of the Noble
Circle Sisters and the Noble Circle Project, so they'll both
(14:16):
be there showing the best in spring fashions. It's just
a really fun day all the way around.
Speaker 1 (14:24):
Are the sisters fashion models? Yes?
Speaker 4 (14:27):
Nice? Yes, my fashion Dave, I'm done with that now
on the bigger and better things.
Speaker 2 (14:38):
And you must be a Noble Circle Sister in order
to be a part of the fashion show. And it's
so much fun watching people strut their stuff. We were
discussing this because we've talked about other years. There was
one Noble Circle Sister who we all dearly love. Her
name Shelley, and Shelley is an amazing artist. In fact,
(15:00):
you've ever been to the Kettering Cancer Center and have
seen the beautiful glass flowers that they have throughout the
cancer center, she designed and made all those and she
also studis jewelry. She's a doctoral professor every year. Well,
Shelley came out to strut her stuff, the first time
wearing a short white wig, and the second time she
came out on the runway she had on a short
(15:22):
pink wig, and the third time she came out bald. Oh,
and what a moment that was for every I get goosebumps.
I think about it because to be that strong and
feel so empowered, and that's what that day is all about.
The empowerment that you feel is just extraordinary.
Speaker 1 (15:42):
Yeah, well, we want to raise a whole bunch of money.
So if people want to go, how do they get
a ticket?
Speaker 2 (15:48):
Well, you have to buy one no Noblecircle dot org.
That's Noble n O b l E Circle cr cl
E Noblecircle dot org is the website. You don't actually
purchase a ticket. You're just going to purchase a seat,
(16:10):
so you won't get a hard copy ticket or anything.
The tickets are fifty dollars each, which in this day
and age is a steal. They have never raised all
the rice in twenty years. That's cool, So fifty dollars
per ticket. Get your friends together, come and enjoy just
a wonderful day of thriving beyond cancer.
Speaker 1 (16:31):
All right, so before we'll let you go, room's out
of time here, let me know when it is and
where again.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
Okay, it is on Saturday, February the twenty second. It's
at Sinclair Conference Center ten am until two pm. Lunch
starts about eleven thirty. The fashion show starts at one.
We have boutique shopping and really everything that you need
to know is on our website at Noblecircle dot org.
And Dave, let me just real quick thank our sponsors,
(16:57):
Kettering Health, AE s Ohio, the j at the Ohio
State University. I know you love it when I say that,
Boss Chevrolet, the Miami Valley, Chevy Dealers, RB Jenkins and
of course are great friends at iHeartRadio Dayton and Mixed
one of them.
Speaker 1 (17:15):
We're happy to be a part of it, that is
for sure. All right, So get your seats. Yeah, fifty dollars.
Go to that website Noble Circle dot org. Get your seat,
and of course then just and then sell out all
the merchants that day, and that'd be awesome. Sally, Jenny Kim,
thanks for coming in this morning. Appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (17:31):
Thank you so much.
Speaker 4 (17:32):
Dave,
