Speaker 1 (00:00):
I'm Jeff Stevens. Welcome to Miami Valley View. I have
some very special guests on this wonderful Sunday morning, Frank
Myers and Woody Woodruff, And first of all, gentlemen, welcome
to the show. Thank you both for being here.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Thanks for having us. Jeff, thanks for having us.

Speaker 1 (00:14):
First of all, I love to do an interview where
there's a guitar involved, so I'm very excited about this. Frank,
I know you're in town. You will be in town
here in a couple of weeks for a very very
special event coming up on September twenty ninth at Northridge
High School. First of all, let's I want to go
through your a little bit about your background and your resume.
We are very Dayton and proud of you, my friend,

(00:36):
because of the incredible success of your career writing songs
for Eddie Rabbit and Crystal Gaiale and Lone Star and
John Michael Montgomery. I mean, it's a huge list, and
you're right here from Dayton, and what a career, my friend.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
I've been very blessed, that's for sure, for sure.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
So tell me about For everybody listening, I want them
to hear some of the titles that will jump off
and be like what Frank wrote this song and he answers, yes,
you know.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
I was very fortunate to move to Nashville in eighty
one and I started writing with Eddie. In the fall
of eighty one, he and I and Tanya Tucker wrote
a song called Changes, which became the title song of
her first Arista album. The guy that produced that record
was a guy named David Malloy who produced Eddie Rabbit,
and he loved that song so much that he asked

(01:25):
if I had anything for Eddie to please bring it over.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
And I didn't have anything.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
And it's too long of a story to tell on
the air.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
But anyway, my wife kind of asked me to.

Speaker 3 (01:35):
Write her alone, a Richie type song, and so there
was a line in the song of Changes that when
we were together, it was right, we had it all
you and I, and you and I stuck out to
me as a title, and I wrote the title down.
So that particular day that she asked me to do this,
I pulled that title out and I wrote you and
I that would later be cut by Eddie Rabbit and
Crystal Gale.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
Wow, that is so cool. So that was just a
little part of another song, and you were able to
pull that out and make a whole other song exactly.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (02:03):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (02:03):
And I didn't move to Town as a songwriter.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
I moved to Town as a guitar player.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
And I had only dabbled in the writing aspect of
by putting melodies to actually my sister's lyrics.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
And actually in a voice teacher.

Speaker 3 (02:19):
I had strained my throat when I was younger, and
I met this voice instructor and she asked me if
I could put music to some lyrics.

Speaker 2 (02:27):
She had written.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
So that was my first foray. I didn't even think
about writing songs, truthfully. I just wanted to play guitar
and sing and be a part of a band like
Alabama or something like that, you know.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (02:38):
But when I got with Eddie, he was a great writer,
and so I had to play him a couple of
my melodies.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
And he really liked him. We started writing, and that's
how it all began.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
And I mean it happened fast.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
Well. And you mentioned Lionel Richie. He and Kenny Rogers
were doing a lot of stuff together back in that
same time, that early eighties time, and so I would imagine.

Speaker 3 (02:56):
I actually met Lionel Richie received a Pop Award for
You and I on in La he was there, I
met him, and I would later meet him a few
more times. Later on, I met Michael McDonald, who became
a friend, and it was just really cool.

Speaker 1 (03:13):
You know. That's what an awesome time. That was kind
of the urban cowboy era where there was a lot
of songs crossing from the pop charts to the country charts,
the country charts to the pop charts, and you were
right in the middle of all that.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
Yeah, man, you know your history. I'm proud of you.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
I heard you had a pretty good voice too, Bob Way, Well,
thank you.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
Maybe we need to get get working on it.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
We should do it.

Speaker 1 (03:35):
I know that's what people are craving. I'm sure. Well,
anything with you, my friend, would be would be pretty amazing.
So I've just been a student of music and radio
since the early eighties and and that's when I really
fell in love with it. So that eighty eighty one
was when I was just starting to wrap my head
around like everything that came out. And obviously You and
I with Eddie and Crystal was a huge pop hit.

(03:58):
It was a huge country hit. Yeah, and then then
of course the nineties was so big, yes for country,
with Garth and everything and Faith Hill kind of emerging
in all of those folks. But you were right in
there with the likes of John Michael Montgomery and Lone
Star writing songs for them.

Speaker 3 (04:15):
You know, I was very fortunate and blessed to have
hits in four decades, you know.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (04:20):
And I'm still working a lot and writing and producing
a band called Soul Circus Cowboys down in Tampa. If
anybody want to check them out on their YouTube and stuff.
We've got some great videos and some great songs. As
I just played your remakeup.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
It so good, Yes, so good, and it's just a
lot of fun.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
I love it, and you know it's in my DNA.
There's nothing I can do about it.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
It's who I am. I can't stop the music.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
Right. You literally walked into the studio with the guitar attached, which,
by the way, we'll tease everybody listening, Frank is going
to play a song here in a couple of minutes.
But we want to talk about the event that's coming
up on September twenty ninth at Northridge High School, a
place near and dear to you, Frank, and also Woody Woodruff,
who's over here. Hey Woody, Hi, how you doing very good?

(05:05):
Nice to see you, and tell us about this event
that's coming up here on the twenty ninth.

Speaker 4 (05:09):
Yeah, thanks Jeff. It's the north Ridge Alumni Veterans Memorial
Committee has tapped on to Mike Meshnerho's brainchild to have
this memorial back in twenty eleven, and so we've taken
that ball and run with it. There's four hundred and
twenty two names already engraved, but it's full. So we're
trying to raise some money to expand that memorial. And
it's an honors concert we're calling it, with Frank and

(05:31):
Jimmy Nichols and Brett Jones, and it's going to be
some really first class talent for that. The event is
twenty ninth September at six pm at the old Northig
High School Auditorium and that's at twenty two to fifty
one Timber Lane. We have a lot of people to
thank for this right here, including the committee, but also
right State Veterans Military Alumni Association helped us get some
of this together to get our initial ticket sales off

(05:53):
I'd like to give them a shout out because that
was a big help for us to get going. Absolutely,
and there's still tickets available. They're selling very very quickly.
But George's Family Restaurant on North Dixie has been a
real big help to us right in front of the
high school, and they still have tickets. We had a
donor that purchased two hundred tickets, and you can get
if you're a veteran or active duty of any service.

(06:14):
You can get tickets free from the USO Ohio Facebook page,
or you can get vettics dot org tickets with a
nominal processing fee. So that's a pretty big lift right there,
that the community has really surrounded our veterans. We're really
proud of the veterans. I always like to say when
I drive through Ohio after a holiday and you see
the flags when all the graves in Ohio, it's an

(06:36):
impressive site. And Northridge is no different than that. And
we're very proud of our veterans up there.

Speaker 1 (06:42):
Absolutely. What a cool event is this the first year?
Is this the first time for the event.

Speaker 4 (06:47):
It's the first year for this particular event. Frank has
done other things here for the community before Frank's generosity
is endless, and so I got to give him a
big shout out to We graduated together a long long
time ago and haven't seen each other since graduation.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
Has almost today day we've seen each other since graduation.

Speaker 1 (07:04):
Yeah, in fifty years.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
Fifty short years, right, fifty yeah, bring that up?

Speaker 1 (07:09):
So wow, what a what a weekend this is going
to be? And again, uh, if you would, would he
tell me and and everybody listening, what is the best
way that somebody can be a part of this that
they can get their tickets so they don't miss out
on this? On the twenty ninth, Well, I'll recap.

Speaker 4 (07:27):
I think the only tickets for sale right now or
George's Family Restaurant on Nord Dixie all the other that's the.

Speaker 1 (07:32):
Only place sold out.

Speaker 4 (07:33):
They've sold out, but there are still some tickets available.
But like I said, for you're a veteran, you can
go to USO Ohio facebook page and they have some
free tickets for veterans and also vettics.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
Dot org And you have to vettics dot org.

Speaker 3 (07:49):
You have to sign in and you know, kind of
prove that you're a veteran to get free tickets and
I think there's only about twenty five tickets left at Georgia's. Truthfully,
they've been doing such a great job for us and
we appreciate them.

Speaker 4 (08:03):
And yeah, they're a big part of the community up there,
and like we say, you walk in there and you always.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
See some of let you know, oh home with places.

Speaker 4 (08:10):
Yeah, so we give them a big shout out. They've
helped us a great deal.

Speaker 1 (08:15):
That's cool. Well, hopefully people listening to the radio will
move those last handful of tickets.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
Actually, it's Northridge Honors Concert dot Com that you can
go to and they'll give you all the information you
need to know about the show.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
Okay, it's going to be an awesome show.

Speaker 3 (08:31):
You know Brett Jones, he's a big hit songwriter with
a lot of hits. And Jimmy Nichols is just he's
an a list keyboard player in Nashville.

Speaker 2 (08:40):
He's played with the likes of Elton John and who
Elton John, Reeve and McIntyre.

Speaker 3 (08:46):
I mean, he's a great guy and we do a
lot of things together, the two of us, and we
actually do a lot of productions together as well.

Speaker 2 (08:54):
You need to step on your toes there, buddy.

Speaker 4 (08:55):
Well, that's okay, But I also want to mention that
we do have a special guest family going to be there.
Northridge has a Medal of Honor winner from the Vietnam War,
and Wow, Joseph guy Lapont who Salem Avenue is actually
named four and some other places on army stations around
the country are named for him for his service in
nineteen sixty nine and Quang Tin Province in the Republic

(09:16):
of Vietnam. So his faming will be there and we'll
give them a shout out also to honor them in
particular because of the sacrifice of their family members.

Speaker 3 (09:25):
We also want to thank Woodie because he is a
twenty year twenty year marine veteran.

Speaker 1 (09:30):
There we go. Thank you for your service, brother, absolutely, Woody.

Speaker 3 (09:34):
Yeah, I went to the hockey talks and he went
to the wherever you went.

Speaker 1 (09:39):
We're probably not allowed to even say where he went
or where you went for that matter of factly, No,
thank you for your service, Woody. That is awesome and
what a great patriotic, awesome event. This is going to
be on the twenty ninth. Our time is flying. But Frank,
we got to ask you to do a song. You've
got all these You've got your signature on so many
of these hits. Uh and one of again another you

(10:04):
obviously have a prepared I told you.

Speaker 2 (10:05):
You picked the song you want me to play, and
I'll play it, all right.

Speaker 1 (10:08):
Well, I'm gonna pick lone Star. I'm already there, all right,
another one of those country and pop crossover.

Speaker 3 (10:13):
Yeah. And you know the coolest thing about I'm already there.
You know, we wrote that about us being on the
road away from our families, and anyone that's on the
road can relate to it.

Speaker 2 (10:23):
Obviously.

Speaker 3 (10:24):
Then the military picked it up and we have binders
with three inches of emails from military families that RCA
gave us.

Speaker 1 (10:33):
Really yeah wow, And I remember it had It had
an impact on nine to eleven too. I remember that
that song was because we were on the radio at
the time, and I remember that song almost like went
back into power rotation shortly after nine to eleven.

Speaker 2 (10:47):
That and God bless the USA.

Speaker 1 (10:49):
Yes, Yeah, for sure, I wish i'd have written that
one for Yep.

Speaker 2 (10:55):
I just saw him the other day.

Speaker 3 (10:56):
Man, he's we actually put him on a project that
Jimmy and I are producing for hat Boon. Oh wow,
it's it's a kind of a weirre the world kind
of things. I can't go into that, or you won't
hear the song. I'm gonna play the song for you.

Speaker 1 (11:09):
All right, frank Meyer is doing I'm already there.

Speaker 5 (11:24):
He called her on the road.

Speaker 3 (11:28):
Come along the cold hotel room, just to hear say I.

Speaker 5 (11:34):
Love you one more time. And when he heard the sound.

Speaker 3 (11:43):
The kid's laughing in the background, he had to wipe
away a.

Speaker 5 (11:49):
Tear from his eye.

Speaker 6 (11:54):
A little voice came on the phone, said, Daddy, when
you're coming home.

Speaker 5 (12:01):
He said, the first thing that came to his mind.
I'm all already there.

Speaker 6 (12:11):
Take and look around. How the sun shine in your hair.
I'm a shine on the ground.

Speaker 5 (12:22):

You, darling. Don't worry about the kids. They'll be all right.

Speaker 3 (13:02):
Wish I were in your arms, lying right there beside.

Speaker 5 (13:08):
You, but I know that I'll be in your dreams
to night, and I'll.

Speaker 6 (13:18):
Gently kiss your lips, touch you with my fingertips.

Speaker 5 (13:25):
So turn out the lights and close your eyes.

Speaker 6 (13:31):
I'm all already there. Don't make a sound. I'm the
beating your heart. I'm the moonlight shutting down. I'm the
wisper in the wind, and I'll be there till the end.

(13:55):
Can you feel.

Speaker 5 (13:58):
The love that wish share?

Speaker 6 (14:01):

I'll be with you forever you are. I'm all already there.

(14:29):

(15:28):

the song, I was like, man, I want to do
the high harmony on You should have on Whisper in
the Wind.

Speaker 2 (15:38):
You should have jumped there.

Speaker 1 (15:40):
It was it was happening in here. That was really
fun to watch you do that. Man.

Speaker 3 (15:45):
Absolutely not only get to hear the songs, but the
stories behind the songs, and that loves that. That's the
coolest thing. Truthfully, people love us to pull the curtain back.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
And tell how the hell it came about.

Speaker 1 (15:57):
Yeah, the stories, the stories behind the songs sometimes even
better than the song.

Speaker 3 (16:01):
Absolutely, so they'll get a lot of that. It's going
to be a lot of fun acoustic concert and they're
gonna hear a bunch of hits and the stories behind
them for a really good cause. And we certainly appreciate
your time today my brother.

Speaker 2 (16:15):
