Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning. This is Miami Valley View, a public affairs
program brought to you by iHeartMedia. Dayton I'm your host,
Dave Alexander and joining me this morning. It's duck season,
ladies and gentlemen. Dennis Grant is here, the CEO of
United Rehabilitation Services, along with Carla Knox, who is the
president of the Puerto Rican American Caribbean Organization, and from

(00:24):
AE s Ohio Vivian O'Connell. Good morning, everybody, Good morning.
How's everybody doing?

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Great? Good?

Speaker 1 (00:31):
So it's duck season, Dennis. You excited. You know, it's
duck season.

Speaker 3 (00:35):
All year long at RS and in my life. But yeah,
we're kicking it off. We are so excited. Twenty first
Annual Rubber Duck Regatta cow coming up September twenty first
at the Hispanic Ariage dressable for the ninth year in
a row.

Speaker 1 (00:49):
Nice. Nice, it's so excited, says This is when we
get to see I'm glad you brought the duck in.
By the way, I've missed the ducks, so I'm glad
it's here. But it is pretty cool to start seeing
them all over town and you know, just getting ready
to you know, adopt the duck and see what kind
of great stuff we got to do. And this is
all of course for urs, so before we get into it,
and I always like, you know, we have you in

(01:10):
a couple of times a year, but it's always good
to let everybody know the people are listening in right now.
You know what you do? What does that organization do?

Speaker 3 (01:18):
Well? You know, Dave, we have been around for sixty
eight years. All yeah, she's you know, and it's a
long time that we've been meeting the needs of kids
and adults with disabilities right here in this community. It's
absolutely incredible what we're able to offer. We start with
children at the age of six weeks in our childcare program,
and we are the only childcare program in the state

(01:40):
of Ohio where we actually have nurses as well as occupational, physical,
and speech therapists on site. So for a family who
has a child with a disability, we may be the
only place they can turn.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
You see nobody six weeks.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
Yeah, six weeks of age in our infant room. We're
a five star rated childhood education center to the step
Up to Quality program here in Ohio. We are a
partner of the Exceptional Families program at right Paid Air
Force Base. And you know, actually, we've heard a number
of families say they transfer to write pat because they
heard about our program, no kidding, And so we take

(02:15):
a lot of those kids. But we're also a head
Start early head Start partner. We work with Preschool Promise
and you know, we know that in Montgomery County only
thirty five percent of the children who enter kindergarten are
actually ready to learn. For kids with developmental delays and disabilities,
that's only fourteen percent.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
Geez.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
So we've developed a pre kindergarten program with another kind
of add on, a multimodality instructional approach called Get Set
for School where we actually embed occupational therapists in the
classroom as well to give those kids a little extra
boost deal with some of the sensory issues. We're you know,
for the most open learning channels, so we can make

(02:58):
sure that they're ready to learn when they get there,
give them the best start we can.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
Wow, and when is this How long have you guys
been doing that?

Speaker 3 (03:04):
We've been doing that for about six years now.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
Nice.

Speaker 3 (03:07):
Unfortunately, you know, it's all grant funded, so we're constantly
raising money to support it every year. But we've been
blessed the community cares so much about the kids, and
especially kids with disabilities. They've made it possible for us
to sustain this program year over year.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
Yeah. So, and it's not only kids, no, it's definitely
adults with disabilities as well well.

Speaker 3 (03:26):
We have a school age program after school for kids
six to seventeen. We actually we're just wrapping up summer camp.
Forty two kids with disabilities registered for our summer camp
this year. They also can get their therapies there through
the day, just like the other kids in our traditional childcare,
but we work with high school kids with disabilities. We
provide this. We had forty i think forty three kids

(03:49):
in our summer Youth Work Experience, where job coaches take
them out in the community. They work at different jobs,
either golf courses, restaurants, community centers, landscape, whatever it is.
But they're developing skills and figuring out what they want
to do in life, learn to be more independent, work
with a partner, take supervision. But we also provide job

(04:10):
placement and vocational training for adults with disabilities. And we
have day activities that include a community integration program where
our individuals go out four of our adult clients with
one staff person and they go into the community and
they have fun. They go to the CROC Center, they
go to the library. They do that, but they also
go out and volunteer at places like Boonshofft Museum of Discovery.

(04:33):
They go to Miami Valley Meals. And you know, I
love the partnership with Miami Valley Meals because most of
the people we serve are low income and so on
Thursday afternoons we bring back ten portion family meals frozen
and then on Fridays, for some of our low income families,
we can send meals home with them so we know
they have got nutrition throughout the weekend.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
My heavens. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
So we really take a holistic approach to what do
we do to support not just the people will come
through our doors every day, yeah, but to support them
and their families, not just here right. But our outpatient
OTPT speech program is phenomenal. We've had a great year.
We're serving more and more people all the time. But

(05:16):
you know, we do have openings in physical therapy and
if anybody has a need, please give us a call.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
The best way to go is I'm assuming to go
through the website. Yeah, always go to.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
The website your Sdayton dot org. It's pretty simple, okay,
but don't forget to go to the Duck website.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
Right. So, you know, the the amount of stuff that
you just listed off in a four minute span is incredible.
I mean, you know, it's not just one thing here,
but it's multiple things for different age groups and it's
all amazing. But as you said, it needs to be funded,
and that's why you guys are here. This is what

(05:55):
we're doing. We're trying to get you guys some cash,
and that's why we got the u R S. Robert
Duck Regott, which are super thrilled. I love this thing
every year. It's so much fun. It's so glad that
it's live again.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
Oh yeah, yeah, we had a few years where it wasn't.

Speaker 1 (06:08):
Yeah, where it wasn't. But yeah, it's very important.

Speaker 3 (06:11):
Well, you know, you're right, Dave, because the challenge we
face is not only are the majority of the people
we serve more than seventy percent low income families, but
because of that, we depend upon a lot of governmental funding,
whether it's Medicaid or Job and Family services, childcare subsidies.
We can't control the rate that we're paid. Yeah, and
unfortunately it rarely covers the cost of what we deliver.

(06:33):
I bet, because we have twice the staff as a
normal childcare center. If to run a childcare center or
to work in a childcare center, all you have to
have in State of Ohio is be eighteen in a
high school diploma. All of our teachers have a bachelor's
degree or a master's degree. Our aids have a certificate
in child development. And you have to pay people for
those credentials, sure, and provide that kind of quality, so,

(06:56):
you know, and we do that with all our staff.
We want to provide a living wage where we can,
right yep. But we can't make it on just what
we receive. So we have to raise literally almost a
million dollars a year between grant funding and charitable gifts
as well as events like the Rubber Duck Regatta.

Speaker 1 (07:12):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (07:12):
Otherwise, you know, how do you keep the doors open?

Speaker 1 (07:14):
Right? And you got, Well, whatever you're doing, Dennis, you're
doing it right because you've been doing it for a
very very long time. I mean you haven't well, I've
only been there twenty three years. You might have been
there sixty eight, but you know, it's been going. You
guys are doing it well, and you're doing it great,
and it's great that the community wants to help, and
I think that's a great sign, especially of the Miami Valley.

(07:35):
You know, love what you're doing and want to help always.
And the Rubber Duck Regatta is a great way to
do it because it is your opportunity to of course
donate getting some rubber ducks, but you get a chance
to win some cool stuff as well. And we'll get
into all that of course here in just a little bit.
But I know you have help and the Rubber Duck

(07:55):
Regatta isn't just buy you know, this isn't Dennis's thing.
You need help and that's why we have Carla and
Vivian in with us today. Carla will start with you.
You guys, you've been at the at the.

Speaker 3 (08:07):
Hispanic Coarriage Special for nine years.

Speaker 1 (08:08):
Nine years. That's incredible and it's really cool that you
guys are supporting the UURS.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
Yeah, we're at Paco. We are very happy to support
RS because it's a win win for both. I think
being with URS has obviously got us exposure. Like what
we're doing today. Paco is the Puerto Rican American and
Caribbean organization. We were founded in nineteen ninety one by
a group of Puerto Rican engineers from right pat Over

(08:38):
the years we've developed into you know, more inclusive. I
myself am from Panama and we have board members from Ecuador, Mexico, Columbia,
variety of different countries. But we put on this huge
event that has an attendance. Riverscape is estimating twelve thirteen
thousand people in a one day event with a handful

(09:02):
of volunteers. Our board members we've got about ten and
we do all of the year long we're planning to
put on this event, and then of course we do
have day of volunteers, which is helpful. But we were
founded with a mission to provide charitable services to the community,
but also promote awareness about Latino and Hispanic culture and

(09:23):
the dat and surrounding areas and support the community. So
we're very happy to be able to support the wonderful
work that rs is doing and to get their services
out to our community as well, because a lot of
times the Hispanic community isn't aware of the services that
are provided in the community. So I think it's been

(09:46):
a great partnership and we're looking forward to having the
rubber Debt regartded there for many more years.

Speaker 1 (09:53):
Yeah, okay, before we go in for it, just to
make sure when is it again? The date? So we
get that out there.

Speaker 3 (09:58):
Saturday, September twenty first, and it starts at eleven am.

Speaker 2 (10:01):
We got yeah, yeah, eleven A. The festival is at
River State Metropark. It's been there since two thousand and two.
Because this is actually our twenty third year. It would
have been twenty four, but you know, twenty we didn't
have a live event. We had a virtual event, but
we've had a live event ever since. So this is

(10:23):
our twenty third year at Riverscape. It's eleven am to
eleven pm. We kick off at noon with a parade
and then we just have entertainment, wonderful food vendors.

Speaker 1 (10:37):
You know, the whole day town smells amazing.

Speaker 2 (10:41):
We usually we usually have twenty twenty five different food
vendors along with the merchandise vendors and all of the
community organizations. On the info booth. We're partnering with Alzheimer's Association,
which is another great community partner, to bring all of
those community information booths together under what we're calling the

(11:04):
community cares.

Speaker 1 (11:05):
Now, yeah, that's awesome, what a great what a great event.
When do the ducks get dropped?

Speaker 3 (11:10):
We will do that about four thirty four thirty, but
we'll be at the pavilion at four o'clock. We'll do
a few announcements. We have the Quacky Kids Parade, so
we want all the families to come down and join
the parade and then we'll take it down to the river.
And you know, we are thrilled to death. This year
we have our new presenting sponsor AS Ohio, which is

(11:31):
why we invited So we have Vivian. That's right, We
invited Vivian, the Ohio Impact Leader to come.

Speaker 1 (11:36):
So, Vivian, tell us how did you become involved? You
know why is AES sponsoring RS Rubber Duck.

Speaker 4 (11:43):
Wegatta AS Ohio is committed to supporting our community. We
have twenty four counties in Ohio that we serve, and
our customers are very important and this is just one
way that we're supporting the community. We've made investments throughout
that twenty four county service area in economic development. We're

(12:07):
in the process of upgrading a twenty five year old
grid system, and through community partnerships on our corporate side
as well as our as Ohio Foundation. We're donating one
point four million dollars annually through the foundation to support
local nonprofits and initiatives. So we also encourage our employees

(12:32):
to give back in the community. They serve on boards,
they volunteer, and so it's an opportunity for us. We
actually give them two days a year to volunteer during
the workday, and so we've had our Young Professionals group
out to urs for a carnival a few months ago.
Very cool, and we'll be engaging our entire team with

(12:54):
duck tagging and cleaning in preparation for the regatta.

Speaker 1 (12:58):
Oh they get to do that, and we need all
the help we can do.

Speaker 4 (13:02):
The day of volunteers. U RS needs volunteers throughout the
day to sell ducks and also to wrangle ducks at
the end and clean the ducks out of the river.
It's a controlled race, so we don't know duck is
left behind, and so our people will be on site
volunteering as well and part of the entire event. But

(13:24):
we're thrilled to be the presenting sponsor and have the
opportunity to support you.

Speaker 1 (13:28):
R S that's awesome. That's so I'm glad that your
employees are getting out giving back and being a part
of this event. I mean, everybody here in this room
right now is doing some really cool stuff to help
out Dennis in RS. And I think it's amazing. It's
just once again a testament to our community and how
we all want to give back, and it shows definitely.

Speaker 3 (13:49):
Yeah, we are so thrilled. And you know, I'll tell you.
You know, our mission statement says we enhance the quality
of life for children adults with disabilities. Yeah, and when
we saw the kind of mission statement and that as
Ohio has where they talk about they're committed to enhancing
the quality of life for their customers and the communities
they serve. You know, it's a great pairing of organizations

(14:11):
to accomplish something really incredible.

Speaker 1 (14:13):
Did you reach out to them and so you saw that?
Did you see them reaching out every day but knocking
on doors like Vivien hey to hey.

Speaker 3 (14:21):
My first job at fifteen, I was a fuller brush salesman,
knocking on everything. If you can do that, you can
do anything.

Speaker 1 (14:29):
So that's awesome. So all right, once again, it's September
twenty first it's at the Hispanic Heritage Festival river Scape
Metro Park. It starts at eleven am. Parade once again
is at noon. Yes, and where does that start?

Speaker 2 (14:42):
The parade runs along Second to Patterson and then through monument.

Speaker 1 (14:49):
Right over by the ballpark in river scaping, all that
kind of stuff.

Speaker 3 (14:52):
A lot of fun.

Speaker 1 (14:53):
Yeah, a lot of fun. And there's so much going
on now. You were mentioning about volunteers and all of
you all ask all of this of you. I know, Vivian,
your employers are mostly your volunteers for this event, which
is great. But Carla, do you need volunteers? Do you
need people to help?

Speaker 2 (15:09):
Yes, we absolutely need volunteers. So Paco, you know, puts
on produces the festival. We sell all the beverages, the water, soda,
and beer. That's the fundraising part for us. The vendors
you know that, that's they get all the short proceeds
from the food. So we absolutely need people to help

(15:30):
with those sales. And if you go to our website
pacodaton dot com, you can shoot us a message if
you are interested in volunteering, because we do still need
quite a bit of volunteers. And as I mentioned it
that the proceeds go to our charitable services, which primarily

(15:51):
is our scholarship funds. I think last year we gave
twelve thousand dollars in scholarships. Nice and each year we're
we're increasing it.

Speaker 1 (16:01):
So okay, once again, your website.

Speaker 2 (16:03):
Is Poco Dayton dot com.

Speaker 1 (16:05):
Okay, go check it out, send them a message. You
know they can use as much of it. That's what
I enjoy. If you can't, you know, if you can't
afford to give money, if you can't go buy a
bunch of ducks, you can give your time. Your time
is very very valuable and if you can help out
the day of that would be awesome. So please go
check out pocodaton dot com. All right, so let's talk

(16:26):
about Dennis prizes prizes. Let's talk about the cool stuff
that we can. First of all, where am I going
to go buy a duck?

Speaker 3 (16:35):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (16:35):
Well, for all prizes? If I don't buy a.

Speaker 3 (16:38):
Duck, No ducks are only five dollars. Okay, you get
the famous Quack pack that's six ducks for twenty five,
So get a free duck. And if you buy the
quackpec you get a free Jersey Mike sub at any
of their seven Dayton location.

Speaker 1 (16:50):
That's worth it right there.

Speaker 3 (16:51):
Oh man, it's like we're paying you to a dot
do doc, right, So we really want everybody to get
in the race. But you can go to Dayton Ducks
dot com. Okay, special website just for duck sales. You
can text the word duck to twenty four three sixty five. Okay,
duck two four three sixty five. You can also go
to any area of Buffalo Wild Wings. They've got stickers

(17:14):

You can go to any City Barbecue, all four of
their locations in Dayton, and any of the Jersey Mic
stores as well.

Speaker 1 (17:24):
Nice.

Speaker 3 (17:24):
Yeah, But go to Dayton Ducks dot com. You can
learn all about the race. You can learn about our
sponsors and how to get more engaged, how to volunteer,
and how to adopt your ducks.

Speaker 1 (17:34):
So my question again, how many do you normally average?
What's a good average of the amount of ducks that are.

Speaker 3 (17:40):
Well, we're right about twenty thousand dollars and we've exceeded
that a few times. Oh yeah, because that's a lot
of ducks. Oh, if we think we're going to sell out,
we what are more ducks a week or two.

Speaker 1 (17:50):
Yeah, keep going making it over.

Speaker 3 (17:53):
Yeah, I would put forty thousand and just got to
get out there and adopt them there now, so check
it out.

Speaker 1 (17:59):
You have three restaurants you can go check out. You've
got the text Wise you can go check out the
ducks website as well. So we're all buying ducks, you know,
the quack pack. You can't go wrong with a quack doe,
especially if you're gonna get a free Jersey Mike sandwich.
But you're gonna throw them on the river. And you've
got not just one prize, not two, three, four, You've

(18:20):
got like eight prizes to give away.

Speaker 3 (18:22):

happy because Performance Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram of Center Bille Yeah,

of a new or used vehicle any of the vehicles
on their lot.

cash option if you don't want a car right now,
but you know, I think you'll want that car. Check
it out.

Well, for multiple years we've had great weather.

Speaker 1 (22:26):

I mean it could still be blazing hot out, but
hopefully it won't be great weather to get out there

Speaker 1 (23:54):
Yeah, and then we.

Speaker 2 (23:55):
Tear everything down that night ends at eleven and we
try to get out of there, you know in the morning.

Speaker 4 (24:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (24:04):
I do a lot of stuff for the local festival
that I live around, and they always like come help
us set up. I'm like great, So you know, you're
putting up all kinds of that's that's not an easy job,
that is for sure. But I wish you all the success.
I hope you know it goes really well. And Dennis,
of course, let's talk a little bit more just before
you know, we let you go, and you got a

(24:24):
couple of minutes left here. But you know, great things
happening at u RS and you know, I'm going to
guess you probably could use a little bit of help
as well.

Speaker 3 (24:34):
Yes, oh, you know, we are always looking for volunteers,
and you know, Vivian mentioned the AEES volunteers came out
and did a carnival. We've had track and field day,
so it's fun things. Sure, you know, you can come
out and help spread mulcher do something like that.

Speaker 1 (24:48):
But we always want.

Speaker 3 (24:50):
People to engage with the kids and adults that we
serve because that's what the mission is all about. We
want you to see it, feel it, you know, and
be a part of it. But you know, even some
of the things as Ohio brought out their safety one
oh one program and taught all of our kids and
adults safety practices just around what can you do to

(25:11):
avoid getting shocked? You plug something in an outlet, or
you know, what are the dangers of a downed wire
and how to avoid that? And I was amazed four
year olds were asking really intelligent questions and even our
safety coordinator learned a couple of things about buddy.

Speaker 1 (25:28):
Yeah. So, but you know, those are the kinds of things.

Speaker 3 (25:32):
If you have a talent, if you have a passion
for guitar playing, for you know whatever, you come out
and play right, you know, because they love it. We
partner with Dayton Performing Arts Alliance. They send out musicians, ballet,
We've had the opera muse Machine. We have lots of
people who bring their talents to the people we serve

(25:55):
because we want to provide them with experiences they might
never otherwise get a chance to see or be a
part of. But we have our annual awards dinner coming
up on August the twentieth. You know, that's gonna be
a big deal because we celebrate the achievements and accomplishments
of many of our clients and even some of our
staff and some of the people who help us through

(26:16):
the year.

Speaker 1 (26:17):
Very cool.

Speaker 3 (26:18):
So yeah, it's gonna be a big deal. So again,
you can go to RS Dayton dot org. Okay, and
just learn more about the organization how to get involved.
But if you want your ducks, Dayton Ducks dot com,
right texts duck to two four, three, six five any
area of Buffalo, Wild Wings City Barbecue or Jersey Mikes.

Speaker 1 (26:37):
Yeah great, okay, So once again happening at the Hispanic
Heritage Festival. You'll see Carla out there. You know she'll
wave high. Just you'll see her. You know exactly who
she is. Vivia to be out there, Dennis would be
out There's gonna be a great some. September twenty first
starts at eleven AM, parades at twelve and you said.

Speaker 3 (26:56):
Fourth duck drop is four thirty. Quaki kids prayed at
four fifteen under the pavilion.

Speaker 1 (27:01):
Come see it.

Speaker 3 (27:02):
Twenty thousand or more rubber ducks flying into the river. Literally,
it's quite the scene.

Speaker 1 (27:08):
Go get your ducks, be supportive, let's get raised a
ton of money for Rs. Vivian, Carla, Dennis, of course,
