Speaker 1 (00:00):
I hope you're great. I'm Brett and this weekend the
Brett Sonders Podcast, let's talk with drummer Tyler Stewart from
longtime KBCO listener favorites Bear Naked Ladies. Listen up, Hi, Brett,
how are you man? It's nice to hear from you.
I'm glad that there's no animosity coming from Canada toward
(00:20):
the United States. From your camp.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Yeah, you know, we'll just let this one play out
and see where it ends up. It's so ridiculous. I mean,
I don't understand it, but it doesn't matter. We're still
going to come down there.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
That makes two of us pal. I don't understand anything
that's going on right now either. Everybody in Colorado loves
Bear Naked Ladies. You'll be at Red Rocks on June
the seventeenth. It's called again this year, it's called the
Last Summer on Earth Tour. Why do you guys call
it that?
Speaker 2 (00:53):
Tyler? Well, Brett, we're going to keep calling it that
until it actually comes true. And the way things are rolling,
you never know, like we figured that, you know initially
back in twenty twelve that was the end of the
Mayan calendar and that's when the world was supposed to end.
Remember there was even a Hollywood blockbuster about it, The
(01:15):
End of the World in twenty twelve, and we thought, well,
if it's going to end this year, we might as
well have a great time in the last summer on Earth.
And that was in twenty twelve, and what do you know,
we're still here. So we just keep on using the
name just in case one day does come true.
Speaker 1 (01:32):
With that said, I hope that you guys are playing
every year in perpetuity.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
Oh me too, man, I'll tell you anytime we get
to go out on the road with our friends. You know,
over the years, we had so many different bands come
out with us, whether they you know, whether we'd played
with them before, you know, back in the heyday, or
whether they were new friends. But we always end up
having these amazing tours. And this time, you know, we've
(01:59):
got our good paler Guster, who we toured with back
of the nineties, and Fastball as well. And you know,
two bands who have a ton of recognizable songs. I'm
sure they all get played the heck out of on KBC. O. Yes, great.
And also you know, still making music, still making albums now.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
I have my theory as to why Bare Naked Ladies
and Doors the way it does. But why do you
think that's true?
Speaker 2 (02:27):
Well, you know, at the end of the day, it's
about the songs. I think, you know, the songwriting is
is top notch, and I think memorable songs that people
love to sing along to, like if I had a
million dollars or one week they last. Also, I think
when you come to see us play live, it's actually
(02:47):
an entertaining and fun show and we're into it. We're
not just you know, going through the motions and gazing
at our shoes. Although you know some bands who do
that are pretty cool too, but you know, not us.
I think that's that's a combination of both good songs
and great shows.
Speaker 1 (03:03):
It's to me, it's because you guys sound like nobody
else before or since, so there's a timelessness to Bear
Naked Ladies.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
Oh, thank you, that's a nice compliment. I think. I
think I agree with you there. You know, we we
are a unique group in terms of, you know, the
kind of things we sing about. But also you know,
everybody sings. There's lots of harmonies, and there's differently booklests
and it's It's an interesting situation. You know. We we
(03:32):
love the fact that we've managed to stay together for
over thirty five years. You know, there's been some changes
here and there. We've had members leave and things like that,
but at the same time, you know, the core of
the group has remained the same, and it's you know,
four guys who really really want to be there and
(03:53):
doing our thing and continuing to you know, love our jobs.
Speaker 1 (03:59):
True or fail, Tyler Stewart, you are the only member
of the band to hold a college degree.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
That is true. Yeah, that means I'm clearly the smartest.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
I was going to ask you. I was going to
ask you, Tyler, do you hold this over everybody's head
at every possible opportunity.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
I have nothing to hold over those guys. They're all geniuses,
and sometimes we do joke about it, but usually when
i'm I've said something stupid or inappropriate, and that's what
they point out. Wait a minute, you're the guy with
a degree. Are you supposed to be smarter than that?
Speaker 1 (04:35):
Hey, your band has always been phenomenally popular here in Colorado.
There are certain markets for bar naked ladies. I know
Detroit is another one that makes sense to me. Because
of the Canadian connection. Why is Bar Naked Lady so
popular in Colorado?
Speaker 2 (04:49):
Well, I think there's a real, you know, pension for
live music there, and also not just any kind of
live music. I think Colorado's really love you know, the
jam band situation or any band that can stretch out musically.
We can do that, but we also stretch out we
improv things, you know, we make stuff up on the spot,
(05:12):
and I think for some reason there's a real appreciation
for that. I think it maybe goes with that whole
you know, outdoor life. Express yourself, you know, get back
to nature and just do whatever comes naturally. And I
think that, you know, Bear Naked Ladies, we do what
comes naturally to us on stage. I think that appeals
to the people of Colorado.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
Interesting. You really are the smartest guy in the band.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
Thanks.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
Do you get a piece of that theme from the
Big Bang theory that I hear a thousand times a day?
Speaker 2 (05:44):
No, yes, we do, indeed, my children, thank you for
watching the show. Thank all the millions of people around
the world for watching the show. It's incredible that that
show changed our lives. And it's one of those things
(06:05):
that you never know what you're getting into with. Somebody
comes and says, hey, we have this TV show about
a bunch of nerdy, smart people. You're not going to
be sure whether you're laughing at them or laughing with
them or what it is. But anyway, can you write
a song that kind of opens the show? And you know,
(06:26):
Ed wrote that song in the shower, which is ridiculous.
And he wasn't even going to take the meeting with
Chuck Laurie and Bill Prady, the guys who started the show,
because we were just too busy and we were too swamped.
And you know, they sent us the initial kind of
you know, demo reel of the show and we were like, yeah,
it's kind of funny, but you know, is it worth
(06:47):
our time? And eventually Ed just whipped the song off
and they loved it, and we worked it out and
recorded and bam, next thing, you know what are we about?
Probably sixteen years later or so fifteen years later, and
it's the biggest sittom of all time, And yeah, we're
(07:07):
very thankful for that.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
Yes, not only that fifteen years later, you guys don't
have to worry about tariffs because you're rolling in gold.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
Well. No comment on that one comment.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
Listen, we love Bear Naked Ladies. We have such a
great relationship with the KBCO and your band over the years.
We couldn't be happier for your success. Tyler Stewart bar
Naked Ladies last summer on Earth tour Red Rocks on
June the seventeenth. This is not really nice to talk
with you. Thanks for your time today.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
Thanks Brett cherious man.
Speaker 1 (07:42):
I really appreciate you listening. I'll see you next week
on the Brett Sonders Podcast. Goodbye,
