Speaker 1 (00:01):
The voice of Yardley Smith is imprinted upon our DNA
in America. I mean, she's Lisa Simpson from The Simpsons.
She also hosts the podcast Small Town Dix and they're
going to be appearing at the Summit Music Hall in
Denver on February thirteenth. Let's say hi to Yardley Smith
on the Brett Sonders podcast.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Hattie, how are you.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
I'm really happy to meet you.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Thank you, thanks for having me listen.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
Yardley Smith. I have to tell you before we talk
about the podcast or anything, I'm just so happy that
you are out there in this turbulent, borderline techno fascist world.
Yardley Smith is there making people happy, making people think

(00:50):
through the persona of Lisa Simpson like no one else
in the media landscape. I'm very grateful for you.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
Really, Oh, I appreciate that. I'm I'm so grateful to
be able to be a part of the creation of
that magnificent little creature who is Lisa Simpson.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
Yard Lee Smith is part of the great podcast Small
Town Dix. I've been listening to this thing. You'll be
at the Summit Music Hall on February thirteenth, and I
should mention Yardley that's the day before Valentine's what a
Great Date night gift right to surprise somebody to take
them to the small Town Dick's podcast tape recording.

Speaker 2 (01:30):
Yes, yes, I totally agree. Bring the one you love
so you can hang on tight because we tell some
pretty terrible stories on the podcast and this particular live
show we're going to do, we're going to talk about
a couple of cases with an emphasis on offender behavior
because I think people on my side of the table

(01:50):
really want to know what's the why and how do
these seemingly normal people do such abnormal things. Why Why?
That's the question. We may not actually be able to
answer that, but we're gonna.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
Try what attracted you yard lead to true crime?

Speaker 2 (02:11):
I think for me, and even so, I'm actually married
to Detective Dan as one of my co hosts, and
his then we have his identical twin brother, Detective Dave,
and of course Paul Hols and who helped break the
Golden State killer case. And so but even before I
started dating Dan back in twenty fourteen, I just like

(02:33):
the good guys to win, and for me, there was
something comforting about if stuff's gonna go sideways, I almost
swore there. I almost swore there, Brett. If it's gonna
go sideways, then I like knowing that there's a whole
group of people dedicated to putting the train back on
the track, so to speak. And at the end of

(02:54):
the day, I honestly think that that's also why people
love Marvel movies and superheroes. And I just want to
know if there's going to be chaos, that there's a
way to write the chaos.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
I have twenty dollars and what I would give that
to hear the voice of Lisa Simpson's swear. I'm just saying.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
So much mail from our listeners saying, oh my god,
I can't believe I heard Lisa Simpson swear, because I
sound a lot like Lisa Simpson. If this is me,
this is Lisa Samson, you can't tell. We're not that
far apart. So people get a big kick out of it.
And I sadly have a mouth like a sailor.

Speaker 1 (03:35):
You met your husband Dan while he was providing security
for you. I understand.

Speaker 2 (03:41):
Yes, we're a real live bodyguard story.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
And you mentioned that Dan has an identical twin. His
name is Dave. And have they ever tried to prank you.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
No, no, you know what's funny is Now obviously I
can tell them part no problem, and if you know
them even a little bit, I don't think there's an issue.
But when they were little kids, literally the only person
who could tell them apart was their mother, and they
looked so much alike. But as they've gotten older, they've individuated,

(04:18):
I guess for lack of a better word.

Speaker 1 (04:20):
And they both went into law enforcement. They didn't turn
into diabolical gynecologists like that movie Dead Ringers.

Speaker 2 (04:27):
Oh God, thank god they didn't do that.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
I get. I want to mention again a small town
Dix is this excellent podcast featuring Yardley Smith and just
a great crew of people, and they'll be appearing live
at the Summit Music Hall in Denver on February the thirteenth,
night before Valentine's Day. What else will be unearthed at
this podcast event?

Speaker 2 (04:50):
Yardley, I think what's interesting and I the guys actually
have a hard time believing this, But we have such
a may fans and we've been doing this podcast now
for seven plus years, so we're about to launch season
sixteen in the spring. Our fans are so I think

(05:11):
they really feel like Dan and Dave and Paul, of
course is famous in his own right before he joined
our crew. They're so invested in the hearts of my
co hosts. And I always say, listen, you guys could
read a cookbook and people be like, yes, I want
to know what you guys have for breakfast. Of course,

(05:33):
we're going to give them a lot more than that,
But I just think it's great for us to be
able to interact with the people who've supported us for
so long, and we've done a couple of crime Con
conventions and it's always been incredibly warm and successful, and
people are just happy to see us. And the guys
in particular are not being in show business. They're like, uh, okay, listen,

(05:57):
I'm just a knuckle dragon cup truly how they describe
themselves and so like, you guys are wrong, you're rock stars.
So I'm excited for them to get to experience a
little more of that.

Speaker 1 (06:09):
Yardley, what is a typical crime con attendee, like, could
you describe them for me?

Speaker 2 (06:18):
Well, they come from all over They probably know the
podcast better than I do because they've listened to every
episode multiple times. And even though I do the last
pass of the edit on our episodes, I will say
at a certain point they kind of blend together a
little bit. I'm like, oh, yeah, no, it's a Deevedale

(06:39):
from a different episode. And so you know, they're regular
people who are deeply invested in the stories we tell,
who maybe even have not had a great experience with beliefs,
and because of our podcast, they come to us and say,
you really changed my mind or at least opened my
mind what good police work could be. So it's really

(07:04):
fascinating to hear all of their life stories, what they
do for a living, who their families are, why they
decided to spend the time and the money to come
and see us on our panel or be in the
meet and greet. It's I gotta say, I never take
it for granted.

Speaker 1 (07:23):
I like how you take a look at morality on
this podcast. And when I think of you and I
think of the Lisa's Simpson character, I mean, there's no
way back in nineteen eighty nine, nineteen ninety you could
have known that this would turn into the juggernaut that
it has become. But did you always know that Lisa
had that moral center that sort of holds together this

(07:44):
entire universe of the Simpsons.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
Yeah. Interesting. You know, at first she wasn't so much
the moral center. She was just this super smart kid
and this family of this loving but dysfunctional family and
so but I always felt an infinity for Lisa Simpson.

(08:08):
I feel like, and now, certainly after thirty six seasons,
you can't play a character as long as I've played
Lisa and not have some overlap. So there's certainly parts
of me and Lisa and parts of Lisa and me,
but I really feel like I was I can't imagine
anybody else playing Lisa Simpson. And it's one of the

(08:30):
great gifts of playing this part for so long is
that I feel like, Okay, if this is all I'm
remembered for, I am doing this thing that I was
put on this earth to do.

Speaker 1 (08:42):
Everybody has a favorite bit, and I'm sure you hear
it all the time, but actually my favorite bit has
come from this past year, and that's when Lisa was
taking care of Maggie on an airplane and she tells
Maggie about sun Raw and she puts the headphones with
the it's not really sun Raw music, I know Sunrise
music into but she puts the headphones on Maggie, so

(09:04):
Maggie can hear Sunrise music and she starts screaming in agony.
It is the I'm the biggest sun Raw fan in
the world, and I have to tell you, first of all,
thank you for putting sun Raw on television, but also
that that is so hysterical because it reminded me of
so many parents who try to force their musical tastes
on their kids. I love it really funny.

Speaker 2 (09:26):
I also thought, I, of course remember recording that episode
and thought, how brilliant. It's such a common occurrence to
anybody who travels, you know, more than once every five years,
that probably there's an infant on the plane, and you
only hope that the infant is happy and quiet, and

(09:46):
of course they're not. You never want to blame the parents,
but at the same time, we're all trapped in its
metal tube. You're like, please, please, please, do something to
help your child.

Speaker 1 (09:56):
How much longer do you think this incredible journey of
the Simps will last?

Speaker 2 (10:01):
Oh gosh, you know, it's an impossible question to answer.
We're just finishing recording season thirty six. You know, in
my mind, I'm thinking, okay, a nice round number is
forty forty seasons. That's an absurd sentence. So if I
was a betting person, I would put my money on forty.

Speaker 1 (10:23):
Well, it's nice to hear from you. I'm grateful to
talk with you. Yard Lee Smith and the podcast Small
Town Dix The Summit Music Hall, February thirteenth. Great talking
with you, Yarley, Thank you, Thank you, Brett, thank you
for listening. I'm Brett. I'll see you next time. It's
