Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Matthews Honda Akurra High School Game of the Week. Well,
we're here in championship mode, the district champions, the Carrie
Blue Devils, able to get it done versus Gibsonburg forty
four to thirty six, and here with senior Riley Yostan. Wow.
I mean, it seems like you jumped on them early,
and obviously we know that they've got a lot of
(00:21):
talent does Gibsonburg, especially getting into this final. What did
it take in order to get the job done here
and get this victory?
Speaker 2 (00:28):
A lot of preparation. We kind of figured that we'll
end up playing Gibsonburg, so we already looked forward and
already knew who they had and what we had to do.
We obviously knew Ellie Everts is really good, so we
had to lock down on her.
Speaker 1 (00:40):
That was planning Ellie Everts, right, Yeah, this is my
first time actually seeing her in person. I don't know
if you've played against her in some other contexts. I
know you haven't played Gibsonburg before, but yeah, just some
thoughts on what it took for you and your teammates
to try to contain her, because yes, she is a
really good player.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Yeah, I just I mean I was on her and
so is our freshman McKinley. We had to have our
legs ready because she's really quick. She always has the ball.
We have to be ready down because she can just
pull up in your face, drive on you like anything.
That's why we had four fouls. But I mean, luckily
she fouled out, but we have to keep our legs
very fresh because she's amazing.
Speaker 1 (01:12):
That's true, and yeah, she did foul out, but I
mean there's foul trouble for your team as well, including you. Wow,
you were called for four fouls. Riley Stoops for four fouls,
Emily Brodman four fouls, mckidley Kessler were four fouls. Yeah,
these game officials certainly were not shy about blowing the whistles.
When you're in that situation and it's a pressure game
(01:33):
and you have those fouls, how does that change how
you have to guard?
Speaker 2 (01:37):
You kind of have to back off a little bit.
I mean that's kind of sad, but like, I mean,
I want to be aggressive in everything, but you just
have to be more conscious of what you're doing, make
sure you don't reach, sit down, and just stay ready
for the movement or anything. Just don't reach. That's pretty much.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
It right on with Riley Yost for to carry Blued
Devil's a senior after the victory. So the most recent
game that I had, unfortunately you were not there. Yes
against car No stretch, A rare ty for you to
miss a game. I think you might have only missed
any other other game in your career your senior year.
There's your sophomore year, ye, so yeah, what was that like?
(02:10):
You were away which would have been your final home game.
Unfortunately you were dealing with the flu, but knowing that
your teammates were going to have your back support you.
They wanted to make sure that your season would be
able to continue.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
I already knew my coach had my back, my teams have.
My teammates had my back. He already said play for me.
So I was like that, I means are thinking of me,
They'll do everything they can to win, and I know
they had me. I didn't worry at all. I watched
all my couch the whole time.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
There you go exactly, and that's what all the players
were telling us as well. They were playing four years.
So you win the district title here. So your season continues.
You'll celebrate tonight, but at some point, got to think
about Patrick Henry. Right, yes, so the Patriots are able
to defeat Toledo Ottawa Hill. So that's your next opponent.
You haven't played them, but you know some early thoughts
(02:53):
on getting ready for Patrick Henry. How's that gonna go down?
Because you know they're an unfamiliar opponent.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
I don't know. We'll have to watch a lot of film.
Our coach will put out as much as he possibly can,
and we'll have to watch it during our free time
and see what their players and their key players do
and what their moves are, focus on defense and just
see how it goes from there.
Speaker 1 (03:10):
Well, you've done a great job preparing for games and
wild District champions. Congratulations, really great talking to you and
look forward to seeing you in Boston.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
All right, thanks, thank you,
