see Miranda's Bar. And I've always said the Lower Broadway
is the this is the heartbeat of Nashville. It's not

jar de old drunk people. And uh so you guys
are parked right in the middle of it.

I mean, the girls, the clothing's a little light on
the clothing, you know, And I'm like, national's not really
ready for this, you know.

But she's like, no, we should do and I'm like,
all right, well, of course she's right. I mean this
it's wild down here. It's crazy. So my we put
ours in. We started.

I mean I just love as someone that start off
playing bars in Lower Broadway down here, have your own bar,
especially mine. It's located in the old Groon Guitar Shop.
That's a place I used to go back in the
late nineties to look at guitars that I couldn't.

Afford, and so to have and I end up buying
the building.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
So it's it's pretty cool full circle moment, and I
just love it down here. We're gonna come down here.
It's harping not to look out the window. I'm just
like I want to go, like go out and see
what's going on out there.

And then Morgan Wallant took your parking lot in the back.

That parking lot they offered to sell it to us,
you know it was. It was back in two thousand
and seventeen. They offered to sells a parking lot for
a one point five million and I'm like, ye, I
don't have.

Any more money. I'm just tapped out. I'm already put
a lot of.

Money into this building. It sold like three years later
for ten point five and there was only like twelve spoce.
I spend a million dollars for five parking spaces. Every
fifteen parking spaces. Yeah, sold for ten million dollars.

in your driveway than that parking lot.

things been with you? The most recent project we caught
up on was the Tom Petty Deal that you were
a part of. Yeah, the Petty Country. What was that
experience like now that it's fine out there and live?

Yeah, I mean I really love the track.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
It really had a lot of the bluegrass instrumentation that
I loved mixed with the bigger sound. It was a
really great song to have on the road this summer.
Of course we was singing the SEMA Awards. That was
great with three other musicians, Molly Tuttle and Sierra Hall
and Bronwin who's a great bluegrass musicians, so really fun
to have them in that band for that performance, and
it's been great. Honestly, I thought that was kind of

my I thought I was gonna kick this new project off.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
But that sound, that's that was the mentality. I went
into this next recording process and writing process and somehow
wound up with a song called.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
She Hates Me as the next single. So you never
know what's gonna happen when you get in the studio.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
It's like you have plans.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
It's like that thing, you know, you tell God you
want to see someone. God laugh at you tell him
him your plans, right, because it never works out the
way you think it is.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
But that was I love the way that song turned out.
Just I've kind of gone into a different direction for
this album, and uh, but it was.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
It was really great, so fun, and so fun to
have that song on the set list. I mean I
just sang it two nights ago out in Colorado and
I was playing for a crowd of people that didn't
know all my personal songs, you know, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
And that kick into that and everyone just goes crazy.
Speaker 1 (04:16):
Is it special to you to know that, like you're
part of that tribute moving forward? Because you said that
that song had been a part of your sets in
the past.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
I mean, that song is such a big someone's probably
singing one of these bars down here right now. It's
a song that's like it's like a Margaritaville or something,
and that it crosses over right. It's like as the
Tom Petty track, like a lot of country fans know.
But it's also one of his biggest songs. I mean,
the last Chili played. I think this was the last
song he sung. You know, it's like that he was
like three encorees and this is the final song. So
(04:45):
that's pretty pretty special. And this state, I guess you'd
say his family has been really great, sent me a
letter and you know they're to make them proud of
the recordings.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
Was really important for us and they were, And so.
Speaker 3 (04:57):
Yeah, it was a nice, nice little chapter in between
the two projects that in the last record in this one.
Speaker 1 (05:05):
When you say after that you had a plan to
go into the studio and then she Hates Me kind
of popped up and worked. And did you feel pressured
to change things or is there any disappointment when when
something works out different than you hope?
Speaker 2 (05:18):
No?
Speaker 3 (05:18):
No, I mean I think that's what makes music great.
It's just never knowing if you're doing it the right way.
You know, when I write songs and think about albums,
I'm not thinking about my fans at all. I mean,
I think I'm doing them a disservice. So I'm trying
to make something for them, right the artists that I love. Please,
don't make a song that I like. Do your thing
and I'll I'll come find meet you where you're at,
and maybe I like it, maybe I don't.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
That's okay. I want you to go to your thing.
So I'm just I'm just trying to follow the.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
Muse and I get great songwriters together and also listen
for a lot of great outside songs.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
This current she Hates Me was not even meant to
be a song.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
We finished A great song was that we loved, and
we had this idea of those next song lined up.
We were gonna take a little break before we try
to write two songs in a day. It was a
kind of a long day, and uh, someone started noodling
around on this thing, and then someone else hears it.
Now we're all back in the room, we're all pitching
lines in and just kind of having fun goofing around,
and thirty minutes later, it's done, and we're all laughing
(06:12):
and just can't believe that just just happened, and we're like, okay,
now let's move on to the real song. You know,
this was not the real song.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
It wasn't even supposed to be, just someone just messing around.
But then I, you know, I kind of played it for.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
Some people and my kids loved it, and Dad, you
gotta record that, and so we did, and the record
came out great. And at that point I do kind
of back off because I just know myself too well.
I just don't I don't lean towards the fun songs.
I was even from day one with you know, I
never wanted what was I thinking to be a single?
Thank god, I almost didn't Putdrunk on a Plane on
the album.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
I just don't.
Speaker 3 (06:46):
To me, I love George Jones, and like, you know,
I love old school, serious country songs.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
You know, it's kind of what I listened to.
Speaker 3 (06:54):
And so I just really trust, you know, my label
and the people I work with for the kind of
the the thirty thousand foot view of what was happening,
as opposed to my like micromanaging you and everyone just
kind of this is a song that it won by
a natural selection, right, there's no like no one was
pushing for It's like this just kind of popped up.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
When you talk about George Jones type stuff. You have
to keep doing that because that's what you love, right,
That's what's in your heart.
Speaker 3 (07:18):
So I just love those kind of crooners message this morning,
listened to Frank Sinatra on the turntable before I with
my coffee. I just love like those those serious, big voices,
you know, the guys that can sing and girls Alison
Kraus and people look can get in there and like
just start.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
You know, needling on your your your heart, you know,
just getting I love that.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
So I love the fun songs too. Joe Diffie's one
of my favorite singers of all time. He had a
lot of great fun songs. He also had ships that
don't come in. I think you gotta have that. Toby
Keith had a lot of.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
Funny songs, but also some huge serious songs, and that's
kind of what who I am, you know.
Speaker 3 (07:52):
I think that's what people know us for on the
road for sure, is those songs that.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
You know, how might are I hold on or maybe?
Speaker 3 (08:00):
But also you know what was I think and Somewhere
on a Beach and Drunk on a Plane, and I
like those songs.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
I like people.

When it comes time to pick a single, I do
think about people driving to work. I do think about
people spend one hundred dollars on tickets and t shirts
and beer to come to a show, and like, what's
going to lift them and move them either this direction
or that direction?

And this song? I mean, it's fun. Our show is fun.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
At the end of the night, we start getting in
this rapid fire hits of like Drunk and Thinking and
Somewhere on a Beach, and then.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
The Hot Country Nights come out. It is it's fun.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
It's fun playing with people like that and getting them all,
you know, lifted up like that.
Speaker 1 (08:33):
I want to talk more on the new single in
a second, but you brought up Hot Country Nights and
I wanted to ask, was that supposed to be a
short lived like let's just screw around on this and
now it's really got its own life.
Speaker 3 (08:46):
That was from yeah, just being on the road. I mean,
that's it's hard. Like I said, looking out the window here,
you got the best studio I've ever seen in my life.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
It's it all was because of this. When you're on
the road, we do this weird thing. We're like, oh man,
I wish you could just go play a Gigo Roberts.
You know, it's like here are we've made it.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
We're playing for twenty thousand people, and we're on the
road that night, going how fun would be the like
backup Roberts playing a show? You know, it's so stupid,
But we listened to the nineties country over and that's all
we'd listened on the road. I mean, it's just it
goes on till two o'clock in the morning. Who can
like play a song?
Speaker 2 (09:18):
Oh my gosh, I.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
Forgot about that one. And then this idea came up
and our only goal was just to play Roberts as
in this alter ego band. And but the whole thing
was like just a lot of rehearsals. We probably rehearsed
three times just for one show. We wanted to be
not just like I remember we were going to work
up like just to See You Smile by McGraw and
there's a banjo rolling banjopart, and we wanted to play

the exact right way. You know, was he what was
he cape on? In the fifth Threat? Or was he
playing open strings.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
I remember our.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
Guy and our band, you know, reaching out to the
studio musician that played banjo on that song. We wanted
to be like just totally dialed in musically, yeah, and
then the antics can come later. But it was just
meant to be down there, really, and then we started
kind of sneaking in on the road, like opening for ourselves.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
And then the first real show we.
Speaker 3 (10:02):
Had to do a makeup date in Cincinnati and the
band Lanco couldn't make the makeup dates, so someone had
to fill the first of three slots, so it was
Hot Country Nights Brothers Osbourne than Us, and I remember
walking down on stage going this, I'm my career is
going to end right now, this is going to I've
worked so hard to get here and here I'm walking
(10:22):
on stage with two bananas my pants.
Speaker 2 (10:24):
And it's all over. It's this.
Speaker 3 (10:26):
I've ruined my career. I've literally put a knife in it.
But it's it's been a nice edition.

One of the first dates y'all did as well with
Hot Country Nights was in Las Vegas. I feel within
the first handful because I remember being there and people
were like, is that Dirks is that right? Yeah, because
like as the radio guy would know, and so I'm like,
I don't think. I don't think.
Speaker 4 (10:45):
Then like a couple of weeks later like yeah that's me.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
I was like, yeah, because we won't tell anybody. We
just walk out and do it. And there was no
wink wink, hint hint at all.
Speaker 3 (10:53):
I get emails saying great, they write management its great show.
Speaker 2 (10:57):
Dirks was so great, but that opening band it was terrible.
You know, he's got to do better than that.
Speaker 4 (11:03):
Did they ever do any free radio shows? Our Country Nights?
Speaker 2 (11:06):
They I'm sure they were asked, you know. The Knights were, yeah,
we have.
Speaker 3 (11:10):
And the Knights were poised for a big We had
an album coming out April of twenty twenty.
Speaker 2 (11:15):
Yeah we've done.
Speaker 3 (11:15):
Jimmy Kennell, we were doing We're gonna do foun, We're
gonna do Good Morning America, all lined up and then
we were saying the universe is like, you know what,
we've got to like shut this band down somehow, so
we're gonna talk to the lab in China.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (11:31):
That was the world saying hey Dirk, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
go home and hanging with your family enough yeah.
Speaker 3 (11:36):
Yeah, once again the Knights got Yeah. Their whole career
has been just a series of disappointments, and once again
it's fun. Actually, they were we are supposed to open for
Zilia Brown. They're playing near February thirteenth, but it was
originally February third, and then some of the market lost
his voice.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
Yeah, and then they moved to the date that we
can't do.
Speaker 3 (11:53):
But so everything we touched basically turns to crap, is
how it turns out.
Speaker 4 (11:57):
That's fine.

Yeah, things are good for Dirk's Bentley, things are to me,
night's not so good. So back to the single you
were in the studio song kind of just happened? Does
that mean that this is a part of We're going
to find the album details out at some point, that
this will be a part of.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
Yeah, new albums come out this summer, and you know,
there's there's there's I'm so exad about the record, you know, speaking.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
Like serious or great songwriting.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
Steven Wilson Junior, you know, I collaborated on a couple
of songs together, got some great outside songs. It just yeah,
I'm really excited about it. As always, these things just
take so long. I'm always thinking I started working on this,
it's like three different times in the studio once again
to try to get it right, you know.
Speaker 2 (12:38):
But really it's just it's awesome. I'm really excited for it.
Speaker 3 (12:41):
It's been a while since I've had a new albums.
I guess it's been a couple of years, you know.
I think Gold's last single I really had out and
that's been, you know, been a few years.
Speaker 4 (12:49):
Yeah, and this song is so good.
Speaker 2 (12:52):
Man album's gonna come out, leads right into the tour
or a new tour, new all all that stuff. It's
and uh Zach top on the road with us, which
is super awesome. I mean, that's gonna be a really
fun summer for us as fans of his music in general.
So we're excited as a band and crew.
Speaker 1 (13:06):
You said it fell together pretty much in about thirty minutes,
this song y song. Yeah, is this the fastest song
that's kind of falling into place for you?
Speaker 4 (13:13):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (13:13):
I come a little closer. Came really quick too.

That was funny because we're Brett Beavers and I wrote
that song together, and I was in his office and
we were trying to write an up temple honky Tonk
Stomper and I was like, hey, I'm a a cup
of coffee real quick. I came back upstairs and he's.
Speaker 2 (13:25):
Going jing jing. I'm like, what is that?
Speaker 3 (13:28):
You know, just as I do this pop my head
And that was like a thirty minute song too and
ended up being a pretty big hit. But yeah, that's
what just came out. I mean, you're right with Ashley
Gorley and Chase McGill and Ross Kopperman, things move moved
pretty quick.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
And this guy's not how to write some song.
Speaker 4 (13:42):
I don't have time to waste.
Speaker 3 (13:44):
These guys are just it's the guys when I you know,
I don't write full time, right, I'm touring, I'm doing that.

It's kind of cyclical.

So when I get a chance to write these guys,
I always say, it's like it's like being like Hockey
and the Predators, like All Star Weekend. Right, this is
like All Star fantasy camp for a songwriter. You are
the best guys, right, Yeah, there's shapes, there's their skates
are really sharp, and I'm out there going trying to
like get on the ice for these guys.
Speaker 2 (14:09):
And like like a baby, yeah, oh my gosh.
Speaker 3 (14:12):
You like yeah, I'm like, let me stop, so now
let me get a word in hang on.
Speaker 2 (14:18):
It's so fun writing with them.

There's there's so people that are really good at what
they do are just the confidence that they have leads
to just being very just down to earth and open
and kind.
Speaker 2 (14:28):
It's just it's just such a good group. You know.
I love being around people that just love what they do.
Speaker 3 (14:33):
Like you, They're just kind, funny, nice, happy, not competitive.
They just they have the confidence to not be that way, right,
and that's so it's a great group. And that's kind
of how the song writing the song was so fun
because it was just like no pressure, everyone's just you know,
it's just everyone's just throwing stuff out there and trying
to make each other laugh and I don't end up

being pretty good.
